1.
Camera shake defiitely seems to be playing a role here. However you are shooting wide open and the limited depth of field is also contribuiting to what appears to be blur but is also just sections of the picture not in focus. Also interested in your shutter speed as well as your focal length, seems you may have been at the longer end of your zoom which can also emphasize dof. Try taking some pics in bright daylight at 70mm. If your camera is still running the lens at 2.8 try shooting in aperture priority and stopping down a little bit.

  2.
I shoot a lot of racing throughout the year. My MVP: 70-300 VR.. although I don't often use VR (so used to no using it). I used to take my monopod a lot, didn't use it enough to justify carrying it along. As far as lens hoods ( I assume thats what you're talking about), with the coatings that are now on glass, you really don't need them. Avoid shooting into direct sunlight of course and you should be fine.

  3. I purchased the 70-300mm AF-S VR a little over a year ago to shoot motorsports. The guy at the counter told me I

was nuts and would be better off with the 80-200mm f2.8. Well I bought the 70-300mm and I couldn't be happier

with it. It's very sharp, focus time is amazing, and the VR function is quite useful in a focal length that size.

  4. at 8 fps (using MB-D10), You can shoot as many JPEGs as your card will hold, or up to 23 12-bit NEF, or 20 14-bit NEF files before the buffer fills up. The only other downside I can see is many of the DX camera holders will have to step up and buy all FX lenses. From what I've read using a DX lens on the D700 stops down the resolution to a weak 5MP... so who wants to buy my D80??
  5. I have shot road racing events from SCCA to ALMS I use the 70-300mm VR on my D80. I'm very happy with it. It tends to hunt a big in darker environments, but you'll have that.
