1.
Nadine, I don't understand why more on the same plane. You do want to have enough space/angle to make the problem appear more obviously, right? I understand in real life use, this lens could perform well. It is very sharp where it has the focus, but in my case, it isn't always the focal point that I want it to be. Anyway, I sent it off this afternoon, we'll see what Tamron can do. I'll try to remember to upgrade this thread.
By the way, Nadine, just curious, why do you need two of them?

  2.
Thanks Steven. The calculator is interesting.
The lens definitely back focuses for sure, maybe not bad. But knowing it is there, it makes me feel uncomfortable. This was bought mainly for the purpose of portrait, group shots, so it is a lot more significant than shooting landscape. I'll ship it to Tamron for an adjustment. According to Tamron support, they do a thorough check and adjust whatever is needed.

  3.
I just tried 2 copies of the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. both had back focus problem. I don’t feel like keep returning it to amazon.com. for one, I kinda feel bad having Amazon covering the shipping, also, there’s no guarantee that the third will be good. I called Tamron USA and they said if I bought it new, I can ship to them and have it adjusted.

Both back focus pretty bad, worst at f5.0 and f5.6 (could care less if at f2.8), two sweat spots that I hate to compromise. But, manual focus is tad sharp, super sharp.

I just wonder if anyone has had similar experiences. I’d like suggestions as to what’s best to do – keep trying copies with Amazon until get a good one (provided that Amazon allows); or keep the second copy and send to Tamron for a tweak. Going Canon 24-70 isn’t viable at the moment, not just the price, also the weight.

Thanks in advance for your advices!

  4. You were lucky Nick. What an experience.

Sitthivet, I was in shock when I saw my lens landed on concrete. It made a loud sound, a heart breaking sound. I have the habit of leaving the lens on without twisting all the way to the clicking position when I need to switch between several lenses for better convenience. Like when I want to clean the filters or something, I just put the lens on the body, sometimes don't even twist, just use the lens as a body cover or use the body as lens back cover so that less chance dust gets in. Bad habit. From now on, I'll have to double check lens is securely mounted before I take them out the bag, but it maybe hard, sometimes you're late for an event and you'll have to hurry.

So, I guess when I put the lens on the last time, I probably just twisted half way, and as I was walking to the parking lot, it loosened up and came off.

  5. I had it hanging around my neck, I walked across the street and into this big parking lot where the outdoor event

was taking place. As I was walking towards the stage, I saw the lens came off the body and landed hard on the

ground. It was the rear of the lens made the first impact where the zoom twist is. It would have been worse if

it was the metal mount that hit the ground.

Surprisingly, I didn't find any other impact spots. I guess the edge of the hood kinda rolled along and wasn't

    scratched somehow.

The damage left the zoom very hard to twist because the metal was pressed in, and even with a clicking sound at

mid range. I took some test shots and later also covered the event.

When I loaded the images to my PC, I didn't noticed anything obvious with AF, IQ, sharpness also appears ok.

My question is, have any of you had similar experience, (I hope not) I'd like to know whether the lens will

start to fall apart gradually. I hope it is just the initial damage and it will stay put at its current condition.

    thanks in advance.

  6. I bought a few Sandisk's 8GB recently because of that big rebate they were offering a little while ago. However,

a friend and myself both had problem with that card. It happened to me once. After pressing the shutter, the

card became "Busy", which is perfectly normal, but what was not normal is that it stayed "Busy" for a long time

and I had to power off and power back on to get it reset. I think I lose that last shot too. Any similar

    experiences anyone?

  7. You may want to try this tools - GetDataBack http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

The website doesn't look that impressive, but the tool is, at least in many situations, not sure about yours, you wrote over your images:(

I had to use it very recently and it helped!

    GetDataBack is safe-

GetDataBack is read-only, meaning the program will never attempt to write to the drive you are about to recover. Please make sure to read the safety instructions...

  8. I have to agree with all you have said. My love for the 17-40 was left over from when I was using a Rebel small sensor. 17mm on a full frame for landscape would be too much in many cases, but occasional, I like to take special effect shots, so maybe a lens that is less expensive but still provides decent IQ, something like the Tamron SP 17-35mm f2.8.
  9. Hi Bob, I hope you'll see this comment. I go to your site (http://www.bobatkins.com/photography) very often and appreciate your sharing of your expert knowledge. And you sound very down to earth and practical. Thank you!

My question is similar to Jorge's. I recent bought a 5D with the 24-105 L which is really great. however, I've always wanted a 17-40 L for landscape and alike. Since now I have the 24-105 already, what 17-40 would offer other than the extra 17mm angle that the 24-105 doesn't or lacks? Bob or anyone else? Thanks a lot.

  11. Other than PennCamera, anybody know where to rental camera equipment in DC,

Northern VA? There used to be a store in Arlington, but I don't remember where

it was and the name of it, and can't find it on the internet either. Thanks in

    advance for your information.
