  1. I have the 4x5 Compact Field, the one that doesn't require the bag bellows, and uses the 110mm panels. I also have the extention rail and long bellows. Altogether, with the set up that I have, you can easily use lenses from about 75mm to 480mm with no problems. The focus is as smooth as you'll find anywhere and its very precise. More movements than you are ever likely to need, and its extremely rigid, locks down tight and is still compact enough to cart around.

Basically.. its a pleasure to use and you can't go wrong!

  2. Has it ever occurred to you that some people are very happily married and like to be together at home, and don't need to go out and party?? In other words.. they don't need to find 'other' company to keep them happy.

Just a thought you might like to keep somewhere safe for a later date.

  3. jeez.. is that what you really think?

I spend more than 20 weeks of the year away from home.. and you feel that I 'troll' through theses pages because I have no life to live?

Has it ever occured to you that I might actually care about what my work is, care about my clients, and the ethics of what I do?

I'd like to see your committment to photography before you question mine Kevin.

  4. Is that what photography is all about? I'm Thomas Struth.. so anything goes?

Or should we wait to get the light, composition, color, subject and exposure right.. and then be real proud of the work we did that 'split' moment in time.

Or should we just do anything, regardless and not give a ferk?

    I know what I do.

  5. Here's another one.. just can't see why people rant and rave over the guy myself?

He maybe somewhat good at urban photography, but he's nothing special. There are and have been far better!

What is it that gets many of you going about him? I just don't see it!

And as a landscape photographer, my 4 year old could do better!

Sorry, but that is just the way I see it.

  6. And I'm not impressed in the slightest.

Or are all the reproductions as bad and I'm missing something here?

Is there some kind of print quality that goes beyond fantastic, that makes up for lack of subject.. poor composition, poor light, lack of anything to keep the attention..or what?

Ellis.. you didn't give a reason for what you see in this image apart from the fact that you feel it is 'not reproduced very well.."

Just wondering.. what is it that you like or dislike about it.

  7. I sold 49 prints directly from visits to my web site last year.. ranging in size from 8x10 through 30x40. A few of these sales were from folks who had seen my images in previous exhibitions, but most were from new buyers.

Strange though it may seem.. I don't even try to sell prints via my web site!

Even better is the fact that many who frequent this board class my work as 'postcardy' and not serious photography.

  8. I personally think that Paul's images are some of the best that you'll ever see. I also feel that he should get a lot more credit for his work. If one takes into account the likes of Christopher Burkett (a similar style) and all the acclaim that he gets, then Paul should be equal, if not greater than that.

I've also had contact with Paul, with regards a font style and as Mr. Brewer pointed out he's been very helpful.

And I won't even bother going into a comparison about Elger Esser.. guess its each to his own.

  9. I suppose people can't win for loosing where this board is concerned.

If you are looking for something which is somewhat specialised and ask here you might, if your lucky, get some answers after the fact has happened. However, if you have something which is for sale and obviously of use to a fellow large format member and mention it here as 'available' then be prepared to get a lot of nasty replies.

This board needs to lighten up when it come to fellow large format photographers who have items for sale, or those that seek certain items.. and would like to let their fellows users aware of the fact that these items are avaiable.

What is the big problem with this??

  10. Ken,

What postcards would they be? Fortunately I don't sell postcards.. or do calendars or even waste my time submitting work to magazines. I don't even bother doing commissioned work. I haven't done so since 1990, the last time I actually took on a commission for the Telegraph Colour Library. That was a 10 month job here in the USA.. all expenses paid, plus a very good salary, plus a 27ft moterhome and 4WD to go with it.

Plus my 'postcards' as you call them net nearly $40,000 per year through print sales alone. I won't even go into my workshop programme.

So as you can see Ken.. my 'postcards' do really well.

  11. Tossers.. the lot of ya!!

You guy's don't know the meaning of 'wilderness photography'.. you've never been in the wilderness.. and most of you couldn't get there even if you tried! You talk about the wilderness as though its just nextdoors.

    Sincerly.

  12. One rule for me and another for Mr Atherton?

I'd like to see a response from Mr Crisp on this matter..

What say you Mr Crisp?.. and of course all the others that like to jump on me??

    Best Wishes.

    Nigel Turner.

  13. Richard..

A well known poet summed you up when he wrote "One man's success leads to another man's contempt.."

Is there nothing better in your life than to troll through my past messages to show to your 'friends'..?

Perhaps you'd like me to send you the 800 or so comments from my visitors book of the folks that have been on one of my workshops that sing my praises.. don't believe me??

Richard.. I'm glad you didn't choose to come on one of my Holiday Workshops. The last thing I want is someone like you with such a negative outlook and sour personality as to ruin things for the other participants.. that just wouldn't be fair on the others, would it?

    Best Wishes.

    Nigel Turner.

  14. Dear Eric..

What is your problem?? Does my success breed contempt with you??

Ellis doesn't like Ilfochrome.. nor do I.. (anymore) since the onset of the highly control-able LightJet prints. I was making a pun with Ellis that has obviously gone way past your head!

They say success leads to contempt Eric.. and you suffer from this badly. You jump on every thread I post with such negativity. Have you ever heard of a sence of humour??? Lighten up man and enjoy!

    Nigel.

  15. Unfortunately, certain members of this board have taken my message totally out of context. I DONT have an Arca Swiss camera to sell, if I did I would sell it on Ebay. However, I do know someone who does, a rather elderly gentleman who has no computer or internet access at home and has to use his local library on his few visits to the internet.

I felt I would try to help him out, and also the members of this board by trying to put large format photographers together for the common cause. It seems I was wrong.

However, if anyone is interested please contact Mr. Roger Spencer at RogSpencer1956@hotmail.com for any further assistance. I believe the 1956 was when Mr. Spencer started using large format!

As for the negative posts here with regards my character from Mr. Fenner and Mr. Mortensen, whom I would like to make clear I have never met, and therefore they know nothing of me personally is this that I thought personal attacks on this message board were forbidden? Is it one rule for me and another for you?

However I did like Mr. Fenners comment of the people that he knows that DO know me personally as quote I know two people who've been on your trips, and they say you were polite and helpful throughout, never a problem end quote. Mr. Fenner.. may I suggest you dont judge a poster by the messages he posts?

And Mr. Mortensen.. I also have a copy of the post you refer to.. Except I see no profanities, so please feel free to back up your accusations if you so wish. I would love the opportunity to post your original email to me!

You seem to do little on this board to encourage other photographers, as is evident from your posting history. Is there any chance you could post some of your photography so we may judge you? Maybe I should just do what my spell checker suggests when it comes across Mortensen and ignore.

    Sincerely.

    Nigel Turner.

  16. 40 I think! Been using large format since 1988. Originally from the

UK but now resident in Las Vegas, USA.

    Use 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10.
