  1. <p>You can only charge what your client is willing to pay... and I happen to be reffered to people who cant pay $2000 for photography... when it comes to producing high quality pictures..... my clients are happy with what they get.... and I get further referals.... I give my clients option when it comes post processing (b&W, sepis, high contrast etc)... does this mean I take away bread from someone who shoots 2000 weddings... I dont think so... I'm just compeating in my price range market.... and I have no problem with that..... I dont think person should be judged by their ability to pay for "art" (which is not a necessity in this economy).... and photogrpaher by providing a service for a price that they are able to do their bussiness in..... and alot of us low price photographers will do wedding for love of capturing memories (even thou wedding photography may not be the easiest job out there)</p>
  2. <p>Kate, You have beautiful set of images.... and hanging a baby in a sling or a pouch when safety is well observed can make a wonderful image.... the reason I came up with this question... i was browsing thru some youtube newborn photography shoot videos... even not with the hanging prop....seemed that the photographer was the only one around baby..... I've come across some cute cocoons and slings... i've made some cocoons myself (which are intended to be used without hanging).... and I've seen some wonderful images..... but i have also come across some cocoons clearly intended for hanging, that i would not put my groceries in......</p>
  3. <p>I'm a photographer... but I have also dipped my toes in baby photography prop making (baby hats, cocoons.. etc) ... So here is my question... or maybe even concern... what do you think about baby/newborn hanging props... by that i men "stork pouches" .... I know when I see these items for sale (mostly on Etsy) it is usually followed by disclaimer of photographer being responsible for any sustained injury....etc.... but my curiosity has let me to the second part to this question... how many of these pictures are edited and have baby safe and sound, how many have masterfully set up the photo-shoot... and how many close eyes on some safety concerns in the name of the image</p>

    <p> </p>

  4. <p>I agree they will sleep after feeding and in warm environment especially at this age.... i am also glad that you have chosen a simple but sweet baby pose considering it appears that more and more photographers seem to test limits by hanging baby in different stork pouches. I personally think that babies safety is of up most importance... and make sure moms hands are just out side the shot or can be cropped out..... good luck</p>
  5. heres my 2c... actually i want to slightly add to Erics response... if this is Hobby income it goes on the fron of 1040, and all expenses related to hoby can be deducted on Sch A up to hobby income... the problem here is not everyon needs to use Sch A (it is itamized deductions), so you might end up paying taxes on your income... to determine if it is hobby or bussines... gere is a link http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=172833,00.html

p.s. I'm no Tax lawer either, but I did work as tax preper for HRBlock for 5 years

    :)

  6. I personaly mostly shoot Manual....and my kids 7/9 are quite lively... so i get the shoots that are focused on hair or nose, but i also get the ones with eyes.... the benefit of digital, you print only the best, and you see what comes out right then.... if every shot I took would be perfect.... I still put alot of thought when I take a picture but I have much more to choose from since i shoot digital, and I can delete ones I dont need
  7. damage or not... babys eyes are very sensitive.. no wonder for first few days...even weeks baby hardly has eyes wide

open... as i draw from my personal hospital expirience.... I wasnt impressed much ... it was very much a point and shoot

in a bassinet covered w/ tissue paper... blue in my sons case.(8 years ago).. camera was propped paralel to the

bassinet.... i'm not quite what you men more creative... maybe you could put a link to componies website to see some

samples... then we can better see how flexable they are.... are there backgrounds you'll have with you... hospital setting is

not exactly what i would pick... you would probably go for a closeup....to avoid hospital presence

  8. you can get only what your clients are willing to pay... demographics you cater to... if a single mom makes 2500 a month dont expect her to pay 1500 for a cd... i hate to say it, but with the economy we are in and gas prices and so on..... it is all about the location you are in and clients you have.... those will dictate your prices.... I've come acroos a lot of posts about pricing, cds prints, sessions... PN is a huge comunity ranging form people who have studios, people who are published to ones that got their first dslr and hope to be next Annie Leibovitz.... same goes for the opinions on CD... there will be a ton of contridictions.... from I don't do it, I charge $$$$$ for it to I give them with my pacage or charge $40 for the... agiain depends on demographic you cater to.... I checked your site... kudos... great images and IMO you can charge more than $100... (you have a great presentation I would say $300 easy...) but your friends like mentioned above... if you want to keep friendship you'll have to give up those big $$$...... good luck
  9. first, let me say welcome to photo.net....its a dearing photo... a bit contridictive.... model is posed as in glamour image yet her apearance is more of a rebel.......all in all you got the lighting right..and image has the punch....viewer cant help but look.....keep shooting and posting...best of luck
  10. there is a tone of great advise above... here's my 2cents.... I'm mom and I do shoots here and there.... I have a full time job ( as a single parent I can't afford not to for the sake of my kids)....i give my bussines cards out and show all my latest pictures to anyone who has time... I shoot for friends.....one thing I 100% agree with Karen L. you will have these down days.... then pamper yourself, get good sleep and start the next day with a plan... i would highly sugest to write out your expectations, business plan, and what you need to reach it.... 1.bussiness cards... free on vistaprint.com (just pay $5 for shipping.... I take the longest one, but it still arrives in about a week), 2)make flyers, hand them out anywhere you can, network online, craigslist.com, your local tv station might have free clasifieds on their web site, ADVERTISE....3) clean up your web site... show your absolute best work... I noticed that some of the images are too dark, lack contrast... take the out 4) practice, practice, practice... I take my camera to playground, take pictures of kids at play.... ask parents first....offer to send them an image... that will give you practice and can get you a potential client (keep small notebook with you, so you can take email adress and short description of the image).....5)pull yourself together....crying and complaining will not make you better photographer.... take tons of images( your child, join a mom group take pictures of their kids, local parades, sports events)... be a good self critic, but dont pitty yourself..... if image did not come out... figure out what it lacks, try again.... and give praise when you did well.... I take images almost every day... for myself I print on snapfish( i should take a sock in that company), but I a ton of my images stay on a dvd and never make to a print ( I scrapbook too and only the best make into the scrapbook)... I wish you the best of luck and ton of patietnce
