1.
I dint slept for couple of weeks when I broke my D40 and also sigma 18-200 (on my new bike). More over I was not in a condition to buy a new gear or even to repair it (I was away from my country, place where hardly few people speak English). I have to wait for next three months and when I return home I fixed the problem and sold it. The real surprise was then when I got more money than I invested because of the great demand for D40 (I slept happily for next three days).
This made me to strongly believe what I really believe "whatever happens to you at the moment will be good at the end"

LOL, ya its absolutely true that zooming with foot is far better option than zooming with a telephoto for sure and also fast lens is a lot more better, but that was not the issue I raised.
The fact that, why I choose 18-200 was, its really dusty in India and one cannot change the lenses more often. For this reason I went to this lens (I think I posted a thread in PN before buying this lens asking for suggestions). Also ease of this lens made me crazy in handling ie., no need to carry additional bag for extra lens. Most of the time I just take my camera, thats it, even no bag or anything which is connected with my photography. Thats why I like this lens a lot. But as you said I need to compromise a little for this but you know I am happy because I am not a prof.

  3.
No experience with film, but I never miss the great pleasure with every moments of photography. I hardly look into lcd (which if I try, not possible in outdoors). What I do is, take pictures with bracketing and continue shooting. Later I will look into the lcd sitting relaxed.

Sorry, I mean, even I am not convienced by Pierre's words about beginners and snapshooters but I was impressed with his words "When taking pictures of things from a long distance, there's too much stuff in the air between you and the subject, even if the lens was the best lens in the history of the world"

  5.
I guess, photography was not considered as a top, important profession (very few exceptions) which can get you the money for travel. As many gentlemen said above, in majority of cases one will have different job which will allow ones interest in photography.
I agree with JDM because there are plenty of opportunity for a researcher especially in Science to travel around for research conferences. Thus University Prof or even research fellows (like me) travel a lot for science and I am sure they will have plenty of time for their hobbies.
I started my travel (within India) during my early days of research (22) with research grants, but unfortunately I dint had a camera at that time. Now in France and will be here for next 3 years on a big science grant which will cover my travel to many scientific labs here in Europe which are located in nice places. Now you can guess how many times my D90's shutter will open through out the Europe.

  6.
Thanks for all these information, especially Todd, Edward, Jim, JDM, Stephen and Mark for important points to be considered.
Other thing with my zoom experience is, I was always using autofocus and the pictures were never satisfying. Recently I tried with manual focusing and also by bracketing and well, I got good results and happy.
here is one pic shot from the top of small mountain at 200mm. I am really happy with this result.
Thanks again

00WYre-247719584.jpg.84430ecb74ddf24bc520333034758fd2.jpg

  7.
I was really happy till last week. During a conversation, someone told me that any zoom lens above the number of its lowest zoom in multiple of 10 will be a scrap. For example, 18-200mm lens is a scrap according to him 10 multiple of 18 is 180 but the highest number is 200 in this case and so lens do not perform at its best. I did some search for this but not convienced by this argument.
If it is true, why 18-200 mm lens are so popular in the market. (my lens is 18-200).

  8.
Hi PN friends
I dropped accidentally my D40 and from there after the lens is not working properly. Its SIGMA 18-200, HSM,DG, OS. My problem is, in a shot, one can see very sharp focus on the right side, where as, left side will be blur in the same image (see attached image). Please help me with this how to proceed. Is it a minor problem or do I need to change my lens?
Thanks in advance for your helpful tip.
9. Thanks for the tips.

Bob, I red your article after posting this thread and searching in PN. It is very useful.

ISO limit is 200 in D40. I enjoy MF and yes f8 is the right aperture. May be I need to concentrate on "when to open the shutter".

Rick: I will post my results after my experiments.

Chris: I shoot digital may be 100ASA is equivelent to ISO100. However, in my case ISO 200 is the minimum limit and couple of minutes ? I go with Curtis.

Sarah: Thanks I will consider your suggestion.
