  1. Hi Echo ,

Don`t own a 300D so can`t say about the settings. But for my 30D the default setting for flash is 1st curtain sync. This is normally oke.Don`t know which flash you`re using , but my 550EX I can put on high speed known as FP focal plane flash. When set like that the guide number drops significantly according to the manual. You can switch the flash also to 2nd curtain sync. This is handy when you want to fotograph moving objects.I.e someone running holding a lit candle in his hands. When in 1st curtain sync it would look like the trail of the candle flame is in front of the person who seems to run behind it.In 2nd curtain sync the shutter opens as to record the flame trail and just before the 2nd curtain closes the flash will fire ,illuminating the person. That way the light trail will follow the person. Also check the custom function settings of your camera.

    Good luck

  2. For me this was also a though decision. And it took a long time to make

up my mind but finally I went for the 17-55 2.8 IS.I have a 30D and will not upgrade to FF very soon.As I like to shoot indoors and sometimes make portraits 2.8 is very handy. But what really did it for me is the amazingly fast AF of this lens.Last friday I made some tests

in a very dimmed dance school were I will be making some pictures at a party.Though I`m rather new in digital photography. The 17-55 was really fast in focussing in the dark when I pushed the button. As a test I also tried the 50 mm 1.4.And I was amazed that it took quite a while for it to focus, though I thought it was a pretty fast focusing lens itself.I had the camera on A one focus. This means that it automatically switches to A one servo ,when the subject starts to move. But once the 50 1.4 had focused it was dead on also. And last but not least the IQ from the 17-55 is really good.

  3. Hi Jay ,

Last year I bought my 30D.And some months later I got a 550EX.But than my cousinne graduated and was giving a party.A nice chance to get familiar with the camera.Although I have done that before with a Canon AE-1 program which uses ordinary film. For that camera I bought the Nissin double head flash.Later on I could buy the sensor unit which mounts on the hot shoe of the camera. The sensor unit has a switch you can put on either dedicated ,slow sync and off. When I was going to my cousinne I couldn`t find the 550EX ,so I brought the Nissin instead.Connected it to the PC - pins of the 30D and made quite a lot flash pictures with it.Never noticed anything extra ordinary nor did I measure the voltage on the pins.My camera is still doing fine.Hope this helps.
