I highly recommend Sigma's 17-70mm OS f2.8-4. I've been using this lens almost exclusively on my D90 for the last year or so. I myself shoot very similar subject matter (landscape, senic, etc) as well as MANY pictures of my four kids. It has excellent image quality and provides a little bit extra speed for indoor and low-light photography. It also provides a macro setting of 1:2.7 for close-up photography (not the best but works well for floral). All this for a lower price tag than the Nikon 16-85. It retails for about $450-500. Worth consideration.

 1.
I can tell you that you will not be disappointed with the Sigma 17-70. I bought this lens last March after going through much of the same deliberation. From the moment I put it on my D90 I have taken it off maybe twice. Since I shoot mostly landscapes and portraits it is definitely the most ideal. And you can't beat the price. It's got a solid feel to it and the image quality is outstanding. Happy shooting!

 2.
Fantastic shots as always. Caillum Smith, I love the shot of Lake Okanagan. Makes me miss driving to the west coast. I love the opportunities I get as a long-haul truck driver to bring my camera to parts of this beautiful country that I would probably never see otherwise.
I didn't get a chance to get out this week but here's a shot from Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia that I took on Canada Day last year while on a run out east.

00YJnp-336565784.jpg.49b37251dddd5429ea7ab829d2b62de8.jpg

 3.
Amazing pictures as always... Here is my contribution for the week. I recently purchased a Sigma 17-70 w/OS and attached it to my D90. I haven't taken it off in the 2 weeks I've had it. Took a trip to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls and found one who wanted to say hello to me.
4.
Hey everyone,
I know this can get old quickly but I must express my extreme delight with my D90. Only just a year ago I posted a comment that I would "never trade in my F90x for anything digital." Well, I did just that. I have been shooting film for the last 12 years (and I kept an old Canon AV-1 so I can still do so once in a while) but I couldn't bear listening to my wife nag me about developing costs anymore. I am astonished with every aspect of the camera. The menus are easy to navigate, the metering is almost always bang-on, the AF is great and it fits like a glove in my hand. As a long-haul truck driver I get to see many parts of this beautiful country (Canada). Now I will be able to capture this beauty at a much more affordable cost! I currently have a 35-80mm, 80-200mm 4.5-5.6D, and I purchased a 50 1.8 with my D90. I shoot just about everything so I'm already looking at a 300 f/4 and a 10-20/10-24 mm to extend my range on both ends. Happy shooting!

 5.
if I mount the lens at f/2.8 I can get metering to f/16 but if I try to open it back up it's like it sticks at f/16 (or wherever I stop the aperture ring). My 50 f/1.8 BL has no problems at all. I've pretty well resolved to tossing the lens and getting another - unless of course it's an easy fix. The nice thing about FD lenses (especially aftermarket ones) are the low prices!

 6.
I'm having almost exactly the same problem with a Makinon 28mm f/2.8 lens on my AV-1. I can select any aperture value on the lens but when mounted it seems to be stuck at f/16. I pulled the lens apart and manually moved the aperture blades back and forth with ease but when I mounted it back on the camera it did the same thing again. Is this problem common with aftermarket BL lenses?
