1.
The 50 1.4 is a very good lens and I own one. At first I was like you think I need better lenses (L) but when I see other took GREAT pictures with the standard lenses (EF-S) then I know I need to spend time to learn. Now even my EF-S 18-200 can take good pictures.
Since you mention you tend to shoot a lot of landscape. The new Canon EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM might be a good one for crop bodies. Wait for the final review and see how this new lens perform. If you need wider than the EF-S 10-22 is a very good one to get.
The above lenses if you plan to replace your Xti with another crop body like 40D or 50D. If you go full frame than forget about the lenses I mention.
You still can get a new 40D will at very good price and the 50D price is falling.

  2.
I use the Lexar 8gb 300x then I added 2 more 8gb Lexar 233x CF cards (both are UDMA). They all work well on 50D.
At first I thought I need the 300x speed but the 233x work very well and notice no different in speed. The 233x only $55+ per card and is a great card for 50D. You will save money buying the Lexar 8gb 233x card. Make sure you buy the UDMA USB Lexar Card reader to transfer your your photos to computer. The Lexar UDMA card reader has both CF and SD (SDHC) slots.
8gb card can shoot close to 320 raw (large), Raw + JPEG (large) 252, JPEG (large) over thousand.

  3.
I was deciding between the EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro and the EF 50 f/1.4 for couple weeks. I settle down with the EF 50 f/1.4.

The reason I choose the EF 50 f/1.4 is mainly for low light. I can add a Kenko extension tube to get close-up shots.

For Macro - 60 mm is just a little short if you shoot bugs. The EF 100 f/2.8 Macro is better choice if you do shoot bugs.

You need to decide what is your piority and your shooting style.
Both are very good lenses.

  4.
I can't find the $100 difference. There is a $35 difference between non-White Box USA and White Box import for this particular lens. There is a $20 difference between non-White Box USA and White Box USA. This would tell me that the difference is not just import or non-import.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=ef+24-105&N=0&InitialSearch=yes

The first 2 prices USA and Import and half page down is the non "White Box" version clearly there is a $100 different in price. This make me ask about the "white box" lens.
Thanks everyone's feed back. I will contact BH in the morning and find out the answer.

  5.
$800 for the EF-S 15-85 seems high but the fact is our dollar is weaker and weaker. Any import products will cost more.
2007 I went to China the exchange rate was $100 USD = $800 Yuen
This year (January) I only got $100 USD for $690 Yuen
Same for Japan 2006 one USD = 105 yen
Last year I only got 89 yen for each dollar
Compair all the Canon lens price from last year and this year, all lenses price are higher. This is due to the exchange rate and has nothing to do with the pricing.

  6.
The 7D body only $1699 and the 5D MkII is 2699. I rather save the money on the EF-S 17-55 (a thousand dollars lens) and use the money to buy the 5D MkII.
I see you already have the EF 24-105 and EF 70-200, these 2 lens is perfect for a FF (5D MkII). The 24-105 will be wide enough on the 5D.

  7. I used the 50D on my trip with one extra battery (Canon). I shot average 150 + photos each day with the same battery (including viewing my shots and IS on all time).

I never use 3rd party battery.

  8. 50d support UDMA. I have the regular Lexar 133x 4 gb and UDMA 300x 8 gb card.

The 50d manual stated on a 2 gb card maximum Burst 60 (90) on highest setting L in jpeg mode.

    Raw 16 (16) no different. ( ) = UDMA

  9. "That 5DII for shooting video looks like an abomination. 20 min of video and then give the camera a "rest" (so the CMOS doesn't cook) isn't even close to real world for specs."

Most of my video are short clips within 3 - 5 minutes. The 20 minutes is not an issue to me. I am waiting for more info about the Video review of the 5D mkII and how it responds to type of lenses on the camera. If all good, for sure I will get one. I like to have video function on a DSLR. I am an old guy and getting tired carrying both on my trips.

  10. I have been thinking more and more about a 5D 2 but I really don't need 21mp. I don't need full frame and I don't

need HD video. But I would love to have it. How many plan to get one even though they are not professionals or

even if you are professional do you really need all that?

I have been thinking more and more about a 5D 2 too but I really don't need 21mp. I do like to have full frame and

I do like to have HD video. I would love to have it. I plan to get one even though I am not professionals.

5D Mk2 can wait. I want to see more about the HD video clips samples. How people say about it. If the HD

Video is great for sure will get one.

  11. I am a Canon guy but I do thank Nikon. Why? All these years Canon have been ignoring consumer's need. If not Nikon I don't know when will the new EF-S 18-200mm IS ever come out.

    Thanks! Nikon

  12. {I presume budget is not a consideration for you. if thats the case, why dont you do it this way, buy the F4 first. Give it a run for about 2~3 weeks. If you're not fully satisfied, then return it and get the F2.8.}

I disagree with you with this. Merchants are not a testing lab for us. It cost them money when you return an item and have to sell it as USED at a discoung. Want to try out a lenes - rent it.
