  1. Mary, you are correct, my main purpose is fill rather than main source. I have begun some experimentations with my new toy and see that there is quite a lot of potential if I am patient enough to learn the proper use. I've now seen how different metering modes work in different situations and am beginning to experiment with the flash compensation settings as suggested by Bob. Life is grand at this point :-) Thanks to all for this great resource and all of your help so far.
  2. Thank you M D, and yes I do understand that part. My confusion (and I'll try to explain as best I can) is that the E-ttl sends a pre flash and reads that light to set the power of the main flash for exposure. Do I want it the meter to read an evaluative reading of the entire scene, or use something like partial metering which would confine the reading to a smaller section (usually where the subject is) and set the flash level for that. Maybe I'm overthinking it. If I have a bird centered with much dark backround, in evaluative the camera might try to expose for the entire scene to get that dark backround lit well. On the other hand is it just a fill and the meter is going to expose for the scene no mater what the flash is going to be.
  3. I have recently found myself gravitating more toward bird and nature photos. I am shooting with a Canon 40d and 100-

400 L lens. I have purchased a Better Beamer to go on my 380 ex (I'll probably need to upgrade) The question relates

to the most effective metering mode. The flash manual only speaks of evaluative (for general fill flash) , but my mind

keeps saying that partial metering might be better. Is there a concencess as to what metering mode would work best

in this type of photography? Thanks
