1.
The Promaster 17-50mm F2.8 is the same lens as the Tamron and costs a less. The only diference is the lens cap and the rubber grip. You can buy the cap at amizon.
I have this lens and I realy like it a lot.
I also have the 70-300 IS. Like that lens a lot also.
Sometimes I wish I had a lens to span the 50 - 70 mm range, but that is not often.

  2.
When I cruised Alaska I took only two lenses.
1) Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (Non-IS)
2) Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
I never found I needed a wider angle very much. Maybe once or twice.
I wish I would have had a better lens then the 18-55 but I got some pretty good shots with it.

  3.
I visit my Mother In-law every other year in Phoenix.

The Verde Canyon Railroad is a great photo trip. http://www.verdecanyonrr.com/

The Apache Trail is also a great drive with lots of great off the beaton path photo ops. Near the end of the trail is the Tonto National Monument. http://www.verdecanyonrr.com/ Sign up for the walking tour that takes you up to the upper cliff dwellings. The view is spectacular.

  4.
I have a promaster 17-50/2.8 lens that came with a hood. For the price I paid ($200) it is a great lens.
The problem is the lens cap that came with it can't even be installed with the hood on. I purchased a promaster center pinch style cap but it doesn't fit correctly because it actualy hits the front element.
I know that Tamron makes an aftermarket lans cap. Is this the same as the one they use on their lenses and that everyone seems to love?
Is there an aftermarket lans cap that you would suggest?

  5. Is the 40D wired release diferent then the XTi?

Check Radio Shack, you will need:

1) 1/8" Stereo Jack to 3/32" Stereo Plug Adapter
2) 3/32" Stereo Jack to 1/8" Stereo Plug Adapter
3) 20-Ft. Stereo Headphone Cable, 1/8" Jack to 1/8" Plug
6. You can actualy use the camera as a card reader. When the camera is hooked up, open explorer and the camera will show as a drive letter. Copy the sopftware update to the card using explorer. Then disconect the camera from the camera and apply the update as directed.
  7. In ketchikan go to the visitors center and get the walking tour map. It will show you everything of interest.

WE did not go to Sitka, but there is an eagle sanctuary there that is supposed to be worth seeing.

In juneau, if you have time, there is a blue bus that runs to Mendenhall glaciear for $14 round trip. It runs every half our. At Mendenhall glacier there is a trail that will lead you right up to the waterfall.

  8. I just got back from a cruise to alaska. You don't get as close to the wales as you would like. But your 70-200 should be good enough for wales. For eagles you are going to need your 1.4 TC.

I like the kit you are taking. I wish mine was that nice. I took an XTi with the kit lens and the 70-300 IS.
00PtBu-50517584.thumb.jpg.e41fa11e190feef39089aad544cb995b.jpg

  9. THe most expensive part of the camera body is the electronics. An interchangable back would cost as much as a whole body to build but would cost more to design because it would have to fit into the same space as the previous back.
  10. I like my Rbel XTi, one day I took over 800 photos with it. I have never felt it was too small. I recently held the XSi and it feels even better in my hand. Ergonomics is specific to the user. If I was a pro I might step up to a 5D, but for what I use the camera for, the XTi is great for me.

As far as the original posters question. It all depends on your budget. I would spend most of your budget on good lenses over the body. You can always upgrade the body after you become more familiar with the system you eventualy choose. With SLRs you choose a system and build it as your budget allows.

  11. I was recently on vacation and watched a guy swap lenses with the camera pointed face up. I wonder if he had dust problems.

I always twist the lens with it parallel to the ground and as I remove it I swing both the lens and camera face toward the ground. Reverse this process to mount the new lens. This seems to keep the dust down to what the auto-clean can handle. I have yet to see any dust spots.

  12. I just got back from an Alaskan Cruise. I took my 18-55 kit and 70-300 IS. I found I could do without the missing center range from 55 to 70. I think the non IS kit lens is a little soft but it can take good pictures. Here is a picture from Dolly's on Creek street in Ketchikan using the kit lens.
00Pqk1-49675584.thumb.jpg.053a15d8a9799029b5cf05423d04ee38.jpg

  13. There are three things I never check in when flying.
1) My CPAP Machine. (For

    Sleep Apnea)

2) My Laptop Computer

3) My Camera

Out of the three, the only thing I don't have to remove from the bag at security

    is my camera.

If you are going to the statue of liberty, go early. THe ferry stops at ellis island

as well as the statue. Go to the statue first and get right in line. if you don't you

might not get to go up in the statue at all. THen go to ellis island, it is way more

interesting then the statue. You will spend the rest of the day there.

  14. Boo Hoo -

Canon didn't care about all the peaple with FD lenses having to buy all new glass when they got an EOS body. What makes you think they care about you having to pay extra for IS? If they where smart they would make a body with IS, then change the lens mount so you had to buy all new glass anyway.

Canon has also has proven that you can make a decent, inexpensive IS Lens. It is expensive to develop a new lens though and nich lenses like primes are not going to get the attention that a well selling zoom is going to get.

  15. I love my 70-300 f4-5.6 IS.

I have the 17-55 kit lens and it is OK but I did have a chance to play with the new 17-55 IS Kit Lens for a short time and it is way better.

On my trip to alaska last week these 2 lenses worked out as a great combo. I never wished I had something in the 55 to 70mm range.

The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 that was mentioned is a good lens. I played with it one once and was impressed.

  16. SInce you have another camera, try the lens on that camera and see if you have the same problem. If you do it is the lens.

Also try a different lens on the XSi and see if you still have the problem.

maybe it is a compatablity issue with the Xsi and the tamron lens.
