I am trying to help out a friend. She has a Nikon D70s and a Sigma 100-300 (4.5). She must have fitted the lens wrong on the camera. It took a few images, which are all black and then stopped working. Now she cant get the lens off. I have tried obviously pushing the release button and turning but it is stuck.
Any words of wisdom i can pass on?....
thanks very much

Hal- thats what i thought too. I find it very confusing that people seem to get away with it, and even display their work on sites & in exhibitions....
Thanks for the speedy response

Sorry for the long title, this one is kind of hard to explain..
I was wondering if anyone knew what the official line is on work like this
http://www.imagekind.com/showartwork.aspx?IMID=07d6a3ba-74e1-4660-8cbc-1e66fa4170dd
I really love what the artist has done here and would love to try this myself, but was wondering what the official line is on taking drawings and manipulating them in photoshop - at what point does it become your work of art & not someone elses? (this artist may well have drawn his own turkey, but i know that many people do this with drawings they have taken from elsewhere)
thanks

I purchased an Osprey-Talon Battery For Canon EOS-5D and there is a notice on the side of the package that says 'check the camera instruction manual for the compatibilty before purchasing any other battery'.
I cant find my manual anywhere but i am sure Canon wouldnt recommend people buying any other make.
Question is, whether or not Canon would recommend it, is it ok to use the Osprey-Talon battery?
Thanks!

I am wondering if any Israeli forum members could point me to a company in Israel that offers similar services to MPIX (ie, prints, canvases, coffee table books etc)?
Many thanks,
(sorry if this should have been posted elsewhere, feel free to redirect me!)
I have a big family portrait coming up, 6 kids between 7 yrs and 7 months. It will be too cold to shoot outdoors
& my studio is too small for everyone
I was trying to think of a good indoor place with plenty of light. There is a mall near me that is really full of
light & would be perfect.
Does anyone know if this is legally acceptable? i would not be shooting inside any of the stores
Thanks

I have a canon 24-70 lens and was advised to buy a polarizer to prevent reflection from clients with glasses.
Any recommendations appreciated
thanks

I just didnt consider these comments to be helpful, kind or informative, thats all -
"Your problems arise from a lack of photographic skill"
"The mistake is failing to appreciate how much you do not know and that photographing people effectively is a learned skill that takes time, effort, and practice."
I'm not losing any sleep over it, honest :)

many photographers also use cheesecloth for this...

thanks John, big smile :)

Thanks Bruce. The practical side of your response was really helpful.
It was just a shame when you had to start lecturing me about my lack of photographic skill, failing to appreciate how much I dont know, and suggesting I read a book or attend a workshop. This is the reason why I am always so nervous to post questions here. I am painfully aware of how much i still have to learn & where I am lacking, I have many many books that I am ploughing my way through and am always on the look out for workshops in my neighborhood that are at a time of day that I can leave my 3 young kids and attend them.
I just think people should stop & think before lecturing others about how pathetic their knowledge & skills are - what good does it do when they know nothing about the person they are writing to?
-
thanks Matt, that was a really helpful answer.

This may seem really obvious to the all knowledgeable craftspeople who subscribe to this list, but I am hoping
someone will read my question, remember when they had this problem too & answer me in a helpful way...
So, now it is summer & i am shooting outdoor sessions. I have read countless articles about how mid day sun is
too harsh, look for partial shade etc.
So here's the thing - if you shoot in full sun, you get hards shadows. If you shoot in the shade, the photo is
underexposed or you have to use a slow shutter speed that causes blur. If you use patchy shade, you get patches
of sun on the subject's body.
What am I missing here? I am driving myself INSANE trying to figure this out. I cant make my clients turn up at
sunrise or sunset either, they all have young kids who need to be in bed!....

briiliant answer, thanks for the help!

Could it have something to do with changing the Af point? - i have only the center AF point selected because i thought that would give me better focus in the center....
-
ok, its now a total mystery to me.
I have taken a step back & thought about my aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, metering mode, iso and still
lately, the majority of my pictures are coming out blurred. Once upon a time, these setting did not give me this
result:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj300/mookle1974/sharpnessissues.jpg
85mm lens
iso 200
f6.3 at 200 shutter speed.
The session went well but i am still baffled by these shots, which are totally unusable...

when i am not happy with my results from a shoot (or more to the point, i know the parents wont be happy) i offer to reschedule
I am just off out now to do a second shoot because the mother didnt get a shot of her 2 kids sitting together, looking straight on at the camera & smiling....
it only happens once in a while so i dont mind, like to have happy campers and it just keeps me awake at night if i dont ;)
-
ok, thank you for your help, just in time guys, am off out just now to do the shoot.
Will report back!
thanks!

I have never had problems getting sharpness in the eyes with one kid (of course) as all the books and forums say
shoot for the eyes & you cant go wrong. But what do you do when you have 2,3, 4 or more kids in the picture?
where do you focus? sometimes they are moving, sometimes they wont stand near each other, so i am never quite
sure which spot to pick to make all the eyes sharp (and i dont always want to change aperture too drastically as
many parents are obsessed by the 'blurry background' photos)
-
it is for sure, and i am a big fan of reading manuals first, it just still doesnt help me to decide which one to use, have tried them all out but not getting a real sense of what each one is giving me

Having browsed through lots of questions & answers here, I am very nervous to ask this question, incase i get
slammed for asking something SO ridiculous, but here goes!
I have recently upgraded from a Rebel XT to a 5D. I have an 85mm 1.2 which i use most of the time for my portraits.
Anyway, my question is, I am not sure how to decide on which metering mode to set the camera to under which
conditions (evaluative.partial, center weighted?) This isnt something i worried about before but I know that i
should understand them better.
Thanks for your help, go easy..

Sorry, looks like i need to clarify my question. I think the colors are awful too. I have some fabric from local stores. I am now looking for a tidy, efficient way to hang these backdrops within some kind of plastic piping system, whereby I can change out the materials from time to time. If anyone has ever made a system like this, I would be interested in hearing about it. Thanks again.

Stumbled upon these tutorials today-
http://www.expertvillage.com/video/10612_photography-tips-techniques-fill-frame.htm
While i didnt get anything out of the tutorials, i was intrigued by the
backdrop. how would someone like me (who isnt handy at all) go about making
something like this? Anyone made something similar?

The good news: Thankfully, I have close to $2,000 to spend
The dilemma: cannot make my mind up whether to buy a new body or a new lens. I
have a rebel xt and the 28-105 lens. Would love the 5D and the 70-200 2.8
So, its a question of a 5D with the 28-105 or a rebel xt with a 70-200!
Really want to hear your opinions...
