1.
Thanks everyone for your help. I did perform the reset, doesn't flash in test mode or attached to the camera. I will take the unit and my camera to Looking Glass photo in Berkeley; they are very helpful and I know they'll figure it out or send it in or replace the unit.

  2.
Shun: Thanks for your response and photo. Yes, I checked battery position everytime I switched batteries. I'm a gadget freak so I pay close attention to battery orientation. The unit powers up, ready light illuminates, but no flash. At this juncture, I think for some unknown reason the flash bulb simply doesn't fire (or somehow did it short out??). I did not drop this unit or even carry it out of my home (for the last 30 days its been sitting attached to a tripod in the corner); the contacts are immaculate on all my cameras, I just don't understand. I will go to to the store where I purchased the unit and see what they figure out.
Thanks again

  3.
Thanks Shun. I cleaned the contacts, placed new batteries in the unit, attached it to a D80 and D300 and the LCD work read normally, red light is Ready, but no flash. After taking the photo without the flash firing, there is the re-charging behavior, I can see the light flashing then turing into the steady "Ready" mode.

  4.
About a month ago I purchased a Nikon SB-600 from my local camera store. I read the manual, tested it, and shot a few pictures using a D80 and D300. I then ordered the Nikon SC-28T remote cord, tested it, everything fine. This evening after a few weeks not touching the flash I attached my camera to the remote cord, verified settings, pressed the shutter, no flash. I disconnected the flash from the remote cord, and it still does not flash. I read the manual again, the LCD displays information and red light glows "Ready", but nothing happens when I press the Flash button in any mode to test it. I've also tried reset, nothing. I am using Ni-HM rechargeable batteries, aside from that I have no idea why it doesn't fire.
Any insiight appreciated before having to go back to the store.

  5. I purchased the 17-55 for my D80, and now it is glued to my D300. This is my "walk around" lens. For my purposes, it has performed beyond my expectations. I recently purchased the 70-200 but really do not use it, as I suspected. I like to walk up to subjects. I don't have any trouble-shooting tips for your problem, but I do vouch for this lens. When I venture out, I feel there is no thinking or fussing with this set up, D300, MD10 grip, 17-55 f2.8, that's all I need. And I just keep on smiling...

Btw, I want to thank this forum for providing so much useful information from so many talented photographers, whether pro or enthusiast. This has become my destination site.

  6. I just purchsed this lens brand new, and noticed that it is loose on my D80 and D300. By loose I mean

after its mounted, there is play clockwise and counter clockwise, be it only a millimeter or so (I think).

None of my other Nikon lenses do this--they are solid when attached.

My question is if this is normal with this lense, or do I have to return it?

  7. I downloaded and purchased Aperture 2.0 (just as my Lightroom trial expired!) and imported RAW D300 files. Very impressed with RAW conversion 2.0. Aperture also has a drop-down menu for RAW 1.1 and 1.0, so what was imported as RAW prior to 2.0 looks the same (though you can migrate images to RAW 2.0). Just begining to use Aperture 2.0, but my observations:

-Fast, much faster than 1.5.6, I have't seen the spining beachball yet, tested with a project having 280 RAW D300 shots and adjusting them

-I like the preview mode, scrollig through images is real fast, just hit "P" key to toggle between preview (JPG) and RAW.

-Simple UI, clean, uncluttered, for me, I like this, I seem to wrok extremely efficient in AP so I can get back outside

-Yes, off a menu there is a Plugin > menu item, nothing there yet, but soon...

Note that AP 2.0 supports D3/D300 in OSX 10.4.11 too, not only in Leopard. I have 10.4.11 on a G5 dual 2.0, 8GB RAM, 30" and 20" displays, running smooth so far.

  8. Last evening there were 3 D200's on eBay, one in mint condition, all going for under $1000

with 10 minutes left in the auction. There may be deals out there for barely used D200's.
