  1. I just received the Sigma 50-500 lens. What are some good ways to verify the

expected sharpness of this lens? I use a Pentax *istDS, Bogen 3001 tripod and

Canon professional ballhead. I shoot in raw mode and evaluate the picture

    quality with Pentax photo browser.

Pictures of the moon tonight were discouraging at 500mm/f8.0/320. Every single

one appeared out of focus. I took those pictures with the 2-second timer (for

mirror lock-up) when using a tripod. 2-second timer didn't make a difference to

the quality. The tripod was at the shortest setting.

My first thought was that the lens is too heavy for the tripod+ballhead combo I

    use. Any tips?

  2. I took a lot of pictures at Louvre with flash (two years ago). Everybody out there used flash everywhere including at Mona Lisa. I didn't see anyone with tripod. Nor did I take one. They might disallow tripods for fear of damage to the exhibits. I used a school backpack for accessories and the museum guide book, digital SLR and a flash mounted atop and the audio-guide. There were no questions about the equipment at customs of either country or at the museum. (Well... everything you have will go through the x-ray machine at the museum entrance). You want a fast lens to take pictures of the exhibits or the inner corridors.
  3. I was actually thinking about the sticky plug and strap. If the lug is right near the "SMC Pentax DA" logo or the lens serial number, it should work.

I have one of those sticky thing for my other lens and is quite useful. But I have always thought it is better to have a lug on the lens rather than having to use the camera.

  4. I just bought a DS and am using it with a Pretec 512MB 133x SD. The

SD-activity-bulb stays on for about 5 seconds for every RAW image.

133x is supposed to write at 20MB per second. It seems the camera

is the speed bottleneck here? What have others noticed with other SD

    cards?

If I use JPEG (***), the light stays on for about 3 seconds.

    thanks,

  5. Now that I have a brand new DS,

    1. Image stabilization in the body.

    2. ISO 50

    3. Larger CCD

    4. Height extended internal flash rather than just the popup about an edge.

    Other nice things:

    5. single button to switch between RAW and among JPEG modes at the highest resolution. Display current image quality on the top panel.

    6. A dock that can recharge the battery in the camera (like the Kodak Easyshare dock) or in an attachment and for image transfer.

    More:

Upgradable CCD module for higher resolution. Just dreaming. No vendor would do this for business/profit reasons even if that were feasible.
