  1. OK - that makes more sense. These translators only give a vague impression of what is going on. Note the “shutter life of 1 million” mentioned above! I guessing that’s really 100K.

  3. Thanks Dave I see that now. It may still be worth a look for those interested since Ole Thorsen included some indoor shots as well and has provided some useful crops. Finally, credit and thanks should also go to Marianne Oelund who is the originator of the images.

Dave do you have access to the original NEF files? They are no longer on Marianne's site.

  4. Here is a link to an interesting post on dpreview. I did a quick look and did

not see any mention of this in the Nikon forum. My apologies if I missed it.

There have been a lot of high iso comparisons posted on various sites but I was

quite interested to see a low iso comparison. It looked like a reasonable job

at contrasting the 3 cameras. Although the D2X has more noise it really hangs

in there in terms of detail vs. the D3:

  5. Thanks for sharing. However, I am curious as to why you think this image is of any use without some comparison shot. What I see here means nothing. On the other hand if you could post the same shot, same lens with either camera that might be useful. Additionally, you would have to adjust the camera-to-subject distance to account for the crop vs. full frame. Seeing just how the edges hold up with the increased field of view (D3) would be interesting.

I am glad you are enthusiastic about your new camera.

  6. The outdoor sports that you mention don't require a camera with a fast frame rate ? so the D300 is not a must. If you were going to shoot birds I'd point you to a crop camera, but it sounds like your subjects could easily be covered by 24-xxmm zoom on a full frame or a 17/18-xxmm on a crop. Since there are great lenses in both systems and good high ISO performance in all the models you mention I don't think it really matters what you get as far as the camera goes. I'd go to the store and pick some of these cameras up and let that be the deciding factor. You will get all kinds of biases here and on the Canon forum but in reality none of these cameras will be rate limiting towards great photos. The one thing that I might point out (and its been awhile since I did any climbing) is that in my experience I?d go with the D300 and the 18-200mm lens for climbing. You don't want to fumble with lenses on a climb. Just put one decent lens on and let that be the end.
  7. Scott - I would recommend that you read Mark's post carefully and then read it again. The type of shooting that you describe demands the use of high shutter speeds and VR will be of little use to you. Also I think its reasonable to think about switching to some Canon equipment for this application (I hope this does not offend anyone here in the Nikon forum). You are the one that is in the best position to judge but you stated: "I had a tc on the 18-200 and I still couldn?t get in tight enough". Depending on the TC you were already in the 300 to 400mm range. The next step up is a 500mm and that is difficult to handhold for long periods. The compromise is to use Canon's 400mm f/5.6. This lens is well known for in-flight applications. It's light and can be easily handheld, and focuese quicly on non-pro bodies such as the 40D. A 400mm + 40D combo could be had for $28800 new if you have the budget. The 40D should also do well at high ISO (compared to your D200) allowing you to keep the shutter speed high with good image quality. I'm not trying to bash Nikon but for this specific use there is no answer in the Nikon lens lineup. Good luck.
  8. "Hi Russ-

Guess what? Moose gushes like that with nearly every new Nikon platform and has done so since at least when I bought my d1. No, it isn't quite Ken Rockwell pandering, as Moose is talented, but if you are posting Moose's thoughts as some type of rebuttal of Elliot's thoughtful review, I think you may be misdirected."

Yes! Although talented, Moose is a Nikon "poster boy" and rarely has anything bad or critical to say about Nikon equipment. Elliot - thanks for the thoughtful review and comparison.

  9. Why don't you visit the website and see?

You are currently using a pistol grip style head that is compatible with Bogen/Manfrotto plates. I think you can get and adaptor but I would recommend getting a better head first and then worrying about the L plate. I have had two 3265 heads and wish I would have started off with decent ball head instead. However, YMMV.

Finally, yes it does have something to do with mounting the camera. Just like you have plates that mount on the 3265. The L plates allow you to mount on a different (Arca-Swiss compatible) head and since its shaped like an L you can mount the camera in portrait or landscape mode.

  10. Tony - if you enjoy the images from the Sigma 28-300mm, then I think that either lens you mentioned will be fine. The Tamron seems to get reasonable reviews so I personally would go with that one. Don't forget that Sigma makes a 50-500mm, also with decent reviews.
  11. Some of the shots that you post have a big dynamic range and it looks like the camera is handling the exposure pretty well. Also, several of these shots would have undoubtedly produced the dreaded banding effect on my version of the D200. I don't see any hint of that.

On your 2nd page the high ISO exposures are very good. Noise levels are much improved over what I would expect from the D200 especially in the shadow areas. Since I also shoot with a 5D I am really interested to see how the D300 holds up in comparison. Honestly I think that in terms of noise the D300 and 5D would be very close. Thanks for sharing.
