1.
Glad to hear my concerns are put to rest all! Sorry if I ignited any brand loyalty or camera loyalty issues... wasn't my intention to but last I'd checked there were "issues" (always thought they were unfounded
) and I thought this forum was the place to knock them on the head.
ALL I wanted to hear was "yes, we love our 5d2" and I've heard it so thanks...

 2.
Just the kind of thing I wanted to hear. I'm referring to;
- Black spot issue - I did hear a firmware update but I also heard it wasn't that effective. But then I read it on forums and likesay, had taken my eye off it a bit
- Mirror coming unstuck?
If that's all sorted, and its as well loved as I always hoped it was, I can buy without worry!

 3.
I frantically followed news of the 5d2 before release and then didn't buy one. Then there was a load of problems with it and I took my eye off it.

Now its real, been around a while, had some firmware updates, and the price gouging is over, is it safe to buy one?

thanks

 4.
Apologies for not reading all the posts in this thread; i recently bought the 24-105 and the 17-40 for a trip to Morocco. I'm keeping the 17-40 and I sold the 24-105. Its just too heavy and the results not that interesting, although it can definitely come up with the goods with a following wind...

17-40 plus the crop is a good zoom range and a great, light, cheap L lens

 5.
Why doesn't Canon release a video camera with the sensor and the EF mount, costing about the same as a 5d2 but without the flapping mirror and including better audio capabilities (and in the shape of a video camera, not an SLR)?
Marketing the 5d2, or even using it, as a professional video camera seems a bit... odd to me. I tend to think of the 5d2's video as the equivalent of that in my little Ixus - its there for clips, very useful too!
But yes, Charles you're right I don't know the market and don't even own a video camera (or a 5d2 for that matter).

 6.
For the record I finally got a response from bogen imaging (who distribute in the UK) on this;

The tripod attachment to the 3N1 bags that you mention never went into full production due to a design flaw. At this stage there are no plans that I know of to release it but as Kata are always developing & redeveloping, be sure something should appear shortly.

 7.
Weelll.... you all made me buy a 17-40 plus a 24-105.
Take a look at this test shot from the 17-40 (grabbed this morning as I ran out of the house for work) - 17mm @f13. I have to say I'm pretty happy with the detail and the depth of field making it ideal for a landscape lens, although there's understandable (17mm!) softening at the edges, but also a fair amount of CA.
Can anyone else who has a copy of this lens eyeball it for me to check I've got a "good copy"? I'm still paranoid about quality control on this one. Thanks....!
8.
Hi all
I'm sorry if this has been asked a 1000 times but I'd like your thoughts on a lanscape lens for a 1d mark 2. Obviously I'm drawn to the 17-40 but from what I can tell the variation between copies is large and they can be bad. I'm thinking of the 24-105L but not sure its wide enough. I'm about to go on a photographic holiday in Morocco and eagerly anticipating the landscape opportunities.

Is there a non-canon lens I'm missing here or is the 17-40 or 24-105 what I'm after? I have a bunch of primes at the moment, the widest of which is the 35 1.4L which is fantastic but probably not wide enough and also not playing to its strengths as a landscape lens. Oh I have the sigma 12-24 too but its so awful I wouldn't use it except for fun with the extreme wide angle at 12mm.

Thanks in advance

Ben

 9.
Have to share this with someone who cares...
My camera fell over on its tripod on sunday on top of a frozen hill. It smashed my brand new Lee polariser (literally its first outing) and tore my lens off the camera. Can't bear to say what the lens was but lets just say it was kind of wide and wasn't cheap! You can now see its innards.
I literally turned my back for a second to pick up my bag and turned back to find what - £400 worth+ of damage. I'm absolutely gutted!

Thanks for listening....

 10.
Thanks all - yes the main reason for getting the upgrade is to be able to (sometimes) use a second flash. Anyway I went for it and the flash arrived today - excitedly brought it home to find the batteries on everything have run out :) so i'm waiting for both my camera batts to charge at the moment.

Anyway i'm loving the flash as an object in itself so far and the silent recharge is just weird. But cool.

cheers all.

Ben

 11.
Thanks - for the multiple flash what I actually meant (sorry that wasn't very clear) is for the flash to fire more than once for a single exposure. I thought you could do it with the 580ex. So for a moving subject, you'd get, say, 4 flashes of it caught at 4 different places.

 12.
Hi all
I'm considering upgrading to a 580ex2 from a 430ex. A couple of questions;

can i just dial in FEC on the dial on the back of the flash?

does the strobe functionality (multiple flashes in one photo) work well? Could I use it to produce a flash every 4 seconds on a 4s exposure, for example?

Is the recycle time noticably faster

Is it a good match for a 1d2?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

 13.
Maybe its time to replace it with someone else's EOS 3... they surely can be had for next to nothing on ebay at the moment.
I have one that hasn't been touched in 2 years but the mode select dial on the top has broken (now permanently stuck on M and can't be turned back!)
