  1. You could always go score an Xti to use while the 20D is in the shop, then sell it on e-bay when you get "Your Baby" and figure the difference is the rent. I sold my Xti for $50 less than what I paid for it 16 weeks after I purchased it AND it rekindled my passion for photography.

One way or the other, Good Luck.

  2. Let me make clear. Not freaked out by people selling things, Scared for our lives from the 10+ people, in 1 city block actually grabbing hold of us and trying to drag us into their cars, and getting a hold of my wifes hair. In America, you would be arrested for assault! I am 6'3" and weigh in at nearly 275, I am not accustomed to people trying to physically drag me into cars.

I went with the right attitude, fully expecting what the "Bloggers" call "Aggressive Street Vendors". But you can't prepare someone for what we experienced. Too Bad too! Beautiful country, and very interesting history. I would be excited to see Negril.

  3. Last week we went to Jamaica for a vacation / photo safari. I went equipped

with 2 DSLR's ,2 digital point and shoots, and a slew of lenses and memory

cards. I had intended to come home with pictures of the local culture,

architecture, landscape and anything else that caught my eye.

When we tried to leave the resort the first morning, we were nearly mobbed. A

taxi driver grabbed my arm and tried to pull me into his car, 3 different people

tried to sell us dope, and some woman grabbed a handful of my wifes hair, and

tried to brad it. The only thing that I could think was that my 40D has a mag

alloy body, and will serve me well if I need to defend myself with it.

We made it to the shop on the corner, and were hassled to death there, and

literally ran back to the resort.

Thank god that the resort was nice, because you can not leave it without

protection. We did finally manage an arranged trip to a gated shopping center,

but I never did leave the resort with my cameras again, and all the local

pictures I shot were with my wifes G9, and her A710. The DSLR just attracts too

    much attention.

I've never experienced anything like this in my life, not in Jamaica, Not in

Mexico, and for sure not in the states.

Everyone is right when they say that Jamaica is not safe...especially for the

    photographer.

I hope that nobody else has that kind of experience on vacation.

  4. I pretty much agree with everyone else here, but I can't ever resist a chance to throw in my 2 cents worth.

This is a case of the small changes adding up to much more than they should. The biggest difference can not be described or shown on a lab test. You just have to hold it in your hand, take it out to dinner, go to a basketball game, and take 500 or 1000 images, then you too will know the difference in the 40D, and you will not regret parting with your $1300.

  5. Self timer not set. What A Pain. I've been messing around for 20 minutes now. First 3 exposures...Not very fast. Everything since has been fine. No change in light, no change in settings. I have changed almost every setting available, and can't get it to slow down now. Just going to have to learn to be patient.

    Thanks again for the help.

  6. It does happen in Manual mode too. The posted picture was taken with a "Cable Release" and as you pointed out, Manual EVERYTHING where there is NO issue. As a matter of fact, there is no issue when using Manual focus, and no, sadly, I don't have any L lenses.

I think it must be a focus issue. I will confirm this evening, in studio and post back.

    Thank you all very much.

  7. My 40D seems hesitant to shoot sometimes. After you hear the focus

confirmation, it can take a second or 2 before the shutter actually trips. This

happens in all "Creative" Modes, and I haven't shot in "AUTO" enough to say if

it's an issue there. I was thinking it may be due to the ISO shift, but

haven't' had time to shut that off. This is the case when using the factory

shutter button, or the one on the battery grip, and it does not matter what lens

    I use.

    Thanks to all.

  8. I know I'm going to catch some flack here, but does anyone have an opinion of

the Westcott Photo Basics PB500 2 and or 3 light kits with background and the

floor mat that shows a novice how to not be an idiot? I have been using clip

on Construction Lights with everything from Wal Mart curly flo lights to the

Reveal Bulbs for some time now. So I am getting accustomed to the "Modeling"

light feature. I am wondering if the $400 or $500 bucks is sufficient to get

started taking portraits? Mostly practicing for free at a company party and

stuff like that. Just trying to learn about portrait lighting while still taking

    a fair picture.

  9. Bob Wins. I have been fighting this same problem for 1 week today, and I have not been able to set 100 or 32oo. Turn off the Highlight Tone Priority, Problem solved.

I much prefer that I have ISO 100 and Meter properly than a grainy image with highlights.

    Thanks Bob.

(BTW, EVERYONE LOVES THIS CAMERA!) we are just lucky enough to have one.

  10. Thanks to all of you. John, with the 40D the Adobe images begin with an _ before the file number.

I took all of your advices, and I see a HUGE difference in the quality of my prints. Mostly the trick, turn off the printers color management and let the application (PS7 in my case) manage the color. Then either color space works just fine. And Thanks to all for the help.

  11. I can shoot all day, and stand in a real dark room all night, but this digital

thing has me a bit confused.

With my new 40D, the manual basically recommends that you don't use the Adobe

RGB color space. Anyone know why? when I assign that color space in PS7, the

printed colors are more accurate. If I don't assign that, my HP printer prints

VERY dark and muddled colors, and my Canon printer prints like is was using

    water colors.

    Thanks for any help.

  12. In Short, I have seen a bit better image from the 40D, mostly in color tone and saturation. These were easily fixed when I had the XTi. The battery grip should be standard for the XTi, but it still feels like PLASTIC. I think that the XTi is better suited for studio work, as I was always afraid I'd break it in the field.
  13. Stephanie. If you haven't made your decision yet, here is my 2 cents. I have had both. If you are an experienced shooter, the 40D has some fit and finish highlights that you will appreciate over the XTi. NOTHING is wrong with the XTi, but I sold mine to afford the 40D. I would have liked to keep the XTi, just can't afford it. So far, I have a few better images that came from the XTi than the 40D just due to the volume of pictures taken with the XTi.<div>00MoKE-38918984.jpg.6ef4df8f338835e90b044c8216c0263f.jpg</div>
  14. This drives me nuts! Once you release the shutter, that instant in history is gone. You NEVER get it back. Don't we want the biggest best image of that moment we can get? After all, isn't that why we all ran right out and shelled out $1300.00 for the 40D? Quality of the sRAW is ok, but the image "PRINT SIZE" is 3.5 x 5.5 inches. My cell phone takes pictures almost that big. I say go full RAW, or Large Fine Jpg. This feature is lost on me.
  15. After MY first weekend with the 40D, I think I am mostly the Glitch. I come from the EOS Film cameras, through a 10D, XTi, now the 40D.

TOO MANY things to remember the first time out. I could not keep the dang ISO off of Auto, every time I switched from one mode to the other, I was fighting to get back to the picture style I want, and I only managed to capture the RAW image on about 1/3 of what I took. Can't blame it on the camera, but I have a lot to learn. Only complaint is LOTS of shutter lag. It seems like sometime you hold the shutter button for 2 seconds before it finally fires.
