1.
Hi all,

After about half a decade of shooting digital, I am planning to try my hands at film. I use a Nikon system and have used most of Nikon’s low/mid-end DSLRs (starting from D70s till a D700).

The only experience of film I have is of snapshooting with a F55 that was my first SLR. I had then used consumer negative film from Kodak. This camera is still functional and I can start with this.

However, I wish to have an all-manual system with the biggest/brightest VF possible in the most compact body. I want an in-built meter and that’s it.

I was thinking of an FM2n (in which case I can use all my Nikkor lenses (quite a few of them) or the Oly OM1 (for the big VF).

Request your opinions on the above 2 and suggestions on any other alternative.

Thanks in advance.
2.
Hi all,
Need a quick opinion.

How good is the caption lens? I can have one in Excellent condition for about $1600. Can this be mated

well to a micro 4/3rd for bird photography?

I am a Nikon shooter but don't have long primes and am looking at this asa cheaper option.

Thanks in advance.
3.
Hello all,

I am planning to buy the current 24mm f/2.8 MF lens for my D700. I thought this is a better lens compared to the AF-D version after reading a few reviews. I plan to use this for landscape and cityscapes.

Request your opinion on this combination of camera/lens and whether you would prefer the AIS to the AF-D.

TIA,

This must be an issue of atmospheric haze as I was at about 14000 ft and there was icy wind all around. The distant mountains were not sharp. My set-up was on a Gitzo 3540LS , focussed manually and trigerred via a remote release. Therefore I can't think of any other factors.

  5.
Hi all,

Recently on a trip, I noticed that my trusted 28-105 AF-D on my D700 wasn't showing the sunbjects at inifinity in good contrast even at 28mm and the focus mark at inifinity.

I have read that all lenses are not capable of true infinity focus. Is that true? In which case, which Nikkor in your experience focuses best at Infinity?

  6.
Hi all,

Thanks for appreciating my pic of last week.

I was taking pics of my daughter Ahana, when her best friend, Utkarsh, tried to peep into the lens. I was having the 60mm micro AF-S on the camera and could quickly refocus on his eyes. That is the advantage of a macro lens for general photography – this lens can focus down to about 5cm from the front element.

Here are the big, expressive eyes that this handsome kid has. I have given a slightly soft look to the image to go with the subject and mood.

  7.
Ahana, my daughter, loves the Pooh and has a few in her collection including this very small one that has it own pillow.

This is shot with the LX-3 in the dynamic B&W preset in square format. This aspect ratio is very handy as I am experimenting with the square B&W format. This aspect ratio (square) is not available through the hardware switch located in the front but through a menu option that has been added in the latest firmware. This was shot in JPEG and only minimal Levels/Curves have been done in processing. I like how the dark areas retain some texture and information.

  8.
Hi all,

I had shared a pic of my daughter last week. Many had liked that pic and my sincere thanks to all those who mentioned it.

Here is one more. (Now-a-days, her portraits are the only photography I am doing)

Ahana has started enjoying music a lot. She loves to put on my big Sennheisers and has a particular liking for the kind of music I listen to. Here she is listening to "Jai Ho" (from the movie Slumdog Millionnaire) on my MP3 player while we were on a holiday last weekend at Pondicherry.

  9.
Hi all,

I have been diligently shooting RAW all this while and processing them in CNX/PS.

I have suddenly got an interest in JPEGs and that is when I started reading up on DR (Dynamic Range) of out-of-camera JPEG.

DPR says that my D700 provides a DR of about 7 stops - and my tiny D3000 is about 8 stops (!) - under ideal settings. However the DR of RAW (NEF) from D700 is about 11 stops.

My question is – what is the DR of a standard LCD monitor and what is the DR of a lab print? If the DR of these things is not more than (say) 8 stops, is there a point in shooting 11 stops if you can’t see them or print them? (I am keeping HDR processing out of the scope of this discussion).

My assumptions on the DR of the monitor/printer is only hypothetical as I have no knowledge of the same.

All pointers and enlightenment are most welcome.

This is infact my first post in the WednesdayPic thread :-) Hope to participate more in the future.
This my 3 and a half year old daughter in a very naughty mood. Hope the years ahead bring her lots of joy and glory.
If I set an aperture on the lens narrower than wide open, would the Viewfinder also go dark to that extent? (One advantage of fast primes on modern cameras is a bright VF as the lens is always kept open till the shutter is fired).

  12.
Hi all,

I am looking to buy a Zeiss ZF lens for my D700. I understand, apart from being manual focus, these lenses don’t have an electronically controlled aperture.

How does then one use these on the D700? Would all the exposure modes work? I would be fine with the Apertre-priority mode, though.

I have so far used only AF lenses and have no experience of MF lenses.

Pls share your inputs.

  13.
Thanks, Keith.

I have found my mistake now. DOF is a function of magnification (FL and subject distance) and f-stop. I was comparing different magnification on different cameras. For the same magnification and f-stop, the DOF is more on a smaller sized sensor.

Sorry for the quick post and bothering all, thanks.

  14.
I am sure this would sound stupid but I need clear this at the earliest. So pls share your guidance.

I was under the impression that as the sensor size increases, the DOF decreases – everything else remaining the same. One of the reasons, I thought, it is said that compacts have more DOF than a DSLR.

Today, while doing some calculation on DOF master, I found that for the same lens, subject distance and f-values, the DOF is more on a D700 than a D300. When I changed the camera to medium format, the DOF increased even more!

Was I missing something? Pls clarify.

  15.
If I understand Jim's question correctly, I think he is trying to find out a lenses performance at various focus points (like close/macro, mid-range, infinity etc.) and not across the focal length range (e.g. a zoom). IMO, photozone doesn't do this kind of testing.
It is said that some lenses are not good at infinity in terms of contrast/sharpness and some are not good at close focussed.
I too would be interested to know which lenses perfom very well at infinity focus. All inputs are most welcome.

  16.
Hi all,
I am torn between the 18-35 f/3.5-4.5 and the 24 f/2.8. I use a D700 and request for specific feedback on the image quality of these 2 lenses on D700. The flexibility of a zoom over prime is not the criterion for me.
Pls help.

  17.
Hi all,
I am reasonably proficient in Photoshop and use best-in-class equipment. I mostly shoot macros and landscapes. Though I fine with my processing for macro shots, I fall short when it comes to Landscapes. They somehow just don't get upto the standards as below:
http://www.timecatcher.com/main.cfm?p=02_300&PhotoID=1346

I am not able to produce pics taken in the twilight hours with a D700+24-70 f/2.8 and a Gitzo tripod which will come close to the above ones. I feel there is something missing in my processing.
Would be grateful for every tip on processing for landscapes to get the look/feel of the pics posted in the links above.
Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I got a D700 a couple of months back and have the following issues (problems?) with it.

1. When I mount my 50 f/1.8, the lens can be focused manually even if the camera is set to autofocus. This lens doesn’t have an M/A arrangement and therefore I presumed one can’t rotate the focus ring if the camera is set to AF. (which was the behaviour of this lens on my previous D300). The AF, though, works fine. Is there anything wrong with the lens/camera?

2. The camera overexposes scenes which are predominantly on the darker side by as much as 1 and a half stops sometimes. This is with matrix on Aperture priority. Well-lit scenes are exposed properly. Has anyone else faced this problem?

3. Again, on scenes on the darker side, the auto WB is much cooler. I thought the auto WB would be able to decide (almost) the correct WB but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Is this common?

Would appreciate all your inputs and suggestions.
