There is a market for making prints for retail customers but to make a living you are going to do more than just print 4x6 pics. Consider a business that helps customers do more with their pictures; posters, photo books, scrapbooking, photo gifts, restoration and copies of old pictures, scanning, framing, photo collages, vedeo transfer. Many of these services you don't even have to be able to do yourself just find a good outlab to do the work for you at wholesale rates mark the work up and sell the job then add equiptment as you learn the market.
You will want a digital mini lab Contact Noritsu.com they have the best service ask about their used labs to get started, as for kiosks try Lucidiom.com their kiosks can give you a host of options that can print direct to the lab and they can set you up with other printers necesssary for the other products you will want to offer your customers. Good luck don't let other people talk you out of your dreams, I suggest you read this story. http://www.imaginginfo.com/web/online/News/Film-Photo-Processors-Strive-to-Adapt-to-Digital/3$2954
