  1. Hi John, I am happy to report that you do not speak for me. Glenn was in, way over his head from day one and his cocksure attitude prevented him from ever getting up to speed. The place seems to be functioning on auto pilot about the same as it did with Glenn at the helm. One thing I will give him is that he would sooner or later drop by and respond to some of the inquiries in this forum. His responses were mostly empty placating with no real solutions but that was better than what transpires these days.

This site in its current state is nothing more than the bait on a hook meant to snag the foolhardy into paying for creative live courses. Nobody is going to fix problems or respond to the few people left posting on the site. The people holding the purse strings will leave the bait on the hook so long as the Google hits continue to make this place good bait or until a shiny new lure comes along.

Glad you got your pasword sorted out on your own. Cheers.

Extremely well said, it reflects my experience and decision to leave. Since leaving I’ve been checking in every week or so, can’t imagine why, perhaps hoping for the miracle that is obviously not going to happen.

It’s recently dawned on me that just coming by as a guest and “clicking” on a few photos may be perpetuating and benefiting the hapless owners of the site. I have vowed to discontinue these visits. A sad decision, I truly miss all my old, missing, friends here.

  2. Who bailed out? Most of us here are working to try to help move things ahead. You might try talking to that tabloid time machine guy, otherwise, the past is gone.

Golly, a lot of your "consumer dollars" at risk for a subscription!

Who bailed? Surely you jest with a that short memory. I do believe it was Photo.net that dropped an untested site on us without discussion or warning. With the majority of the membership bailed, I guess the < 50 posting photographers will have to share the consumer costs.

How’s that “working to try to help” thingy working out for you? Has management all of a sudden gotten chatty about their plans? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Look, my argument isn’t with you and I apologize for my sharp tone. But even you have to be tired of the way this site has been run into the ground. I stopped counting at well over 100 of your newest uploads and in those you have 1 comment. That’s not what a photography site should be about.

Have a good weekend, I’m running away from home again, this is a self defeating forum.;)

  3. I really do feel like I’m talking to jell-o at echo canyon. There will never be meaningful, helpful dialogue until the defensive, guilty attitude about V1 is retired. Nothing most of us have said has anything to do with keeping V1; it’s been about the loss of functionality in V2.

As for posting... why? Photo.net is a supplier asking for my consumer dollar and I’m being very honest in telling you that for over 10 years I was a happy client and you blew it and alienated me and a whole lot of other clients. It’s your job to make us want to come back.

Non-sensical, random responses stretched over 2 years isn’t going to make that happen.

  4. ...we HAD TO UPDATE THE SITE.... WE HAD NO CHANCE in v1.

    Glenn:

I’m not a subscriber anymore and just stop by every so often to see if any of my favorite photographers have reappeared; they haven’t, and that’s material to my comment.

Your complete response above, the only one that you’ve parroted literally for years now, was not completely factual at the release of V2 and it still isn’t. As I’ve stated on several other occasions, we don’t care what computer language you speak and we understand the need to stay current. What we don’t understand and what I’ve never heard you address properly is why you took a fully functioning site, gave it to programmers that obviously had never picked up a camera and let them turn it into a shell of what it was before. That is diametrically opposed to any other site or software offering on the market.

If you really want to try and salvage a site that photographers (not FaceBook clickers) will use, then give V1 to some knowledgeable programmers and let them modernize it to whatever programming language you want, but retain it’s functionality! Then release it on a new site. I hate to say it but your brand name is toast here on Photo.net, the site is flawed beyond repair (especially with the current programmers) because you lost functionality.

Give me a modernized V1, with its full functionality, and I’ll be your first subscriber.

"Every day we have plenty of opportunities to get angry, stressed or offended. But what you're doing when you indulge these negative emotions is giving something outside yourself power over your happiness. You can choose to not let little things upset you." - Joel Osteen

Or if rational thought doesn't do it for you, just listen to the lyrics from redneck Toby Keith's song "All About Me".

And why is this tripe on "Photo.Net Site Help"? The site structure needs help and discussion, not the images.

  6. You don't mention your computer platform but I use Win10 and Edge as a browser and was able to delete my entire portfolio with the exception of two images that had won POW. I assume they reside in a data base on the server and continuallly come back when deleted. Anyway, try deleting the selected images from any gallery first and then from photos. That’s what worked for me.
  7. John:

I would agree to a point, but, as you noted, this is a business where we are the paying consumer. I don’t think it’s an unfair analogy to buying a car and then having it recalled and replaced with an inferior model. In business it is incumbent upon the supplier to appeal to their customer base or lose those customers. Alas, PNet is setting a classroom example. In short, the blasted software should’ve been vetted and working properly, with all the functions of the previous versions, before release.

Although I let my subscription lapse I still monitor the site in hopes that enough improvements are implemented to make this version palatable. So far the discussion forums seem to be ok with the exception of spam, but the photo side of the site remains abysmal with only fluff changes of no consequence.

As for empathy and patience, I have slim to none for a business who would pull such a hair brained stunt and then expect customers to just rave about what’s been served. This Emporer remains naked as a jay bird!

PNet, we’re still waiting but not without a hint of hope... Mike

  8. Will the gallery slide show ever be coming back? One of old P/Ns best features.

To quote Poe, “Nevermore”. You seal the future of any request by mentioning how it used to be . But then, I’ve become quite jaded....Mike

  9. 1x.com appears to require that each picture have a "gimmick" to get published. Oversaturated color, intense stares, etc.

For the most part 1x.com looks like a site for graphic artist. The majority of the images are cooked, well done. Sad to see a fine tool like Photoshop being misused :(... Mike

  10. Additionally - we are working on a new feature (still a work in progress) but it is an activity feed of those you follow on the site - so you can see who else is interacting with those you "follow".

    Glenn:

Is this "Timeline" that you speak of? If so, it's a bust at following others and comments. The best bet you have is to go ahead and fix (finalize) what you started with "My Activity". All it's lacking is the ability to sort all the applicable images with newest first; i.e. no matter which time period is selected, the same image should appear first because it is the most current. However, the absolute best way would be to review the three or so lines in V1 that reported current and past comments, no images, just a number count that you select if there are new comments. So simple and pure, surely the new programming language can do something similar?

  11. I agree with Mark, this isn't a "feature" it's a problem in need of a fix.

It's a problem that needs to go away, as in don't initiate this new feature. It's redundant, invasive, poorly presented and unnecessary; just more of the goop from the "admire" Facebook mentality. If management was truly concerned about members communicating and following each other's work, they'd fix the Critique Forum.... Mike

  12. Glenn, if the timeline will enable me to view critiques of other photographers' work, I'm all for it. (Currently, in the interest of keeping my homepage simple, I didn't opt for automatic notifications.)

    Glenn:

I don't get it, what is Timeline suppose to provide that is not already being shown in Trending? I'm interested in what other photographers find appealing but I don't necessarily care to have it pointed out by listing every new like, comment, etc. generated by someone each time they sit down at their computer. It's a frivolous and overly complex function that, as Michael noted, could have been better utilized by a long overdue reprogramming of the Critique Forum.

I know you think I'm a negative and somewhat belligerent poster here, but I really did examine Timeline and tried to find a useful function there, but it's empty. Revamping the Critique Forum would've taken a fraction of the time spent creating this fluff.

    We're still waiting......

  13. I made a mistake with the OS above, it's Windows 7, not 8....sorry. I'll have a new computer with windows 10 in the next couple of weeks, so I'll see how things go.

    Laura:

When you get your new computer try Edge as a browser. I have a Dell with Win10, all up to date, and have not had any of the issues reported here in Help. Now, that doesn't mean Ver2 PN will DO what you want, but what it does do is consistent and what the programmers intended (however misguided). I think Edge is the difference. I was surprised when Glenn said only 3% of the users are using Edge, it's not a bad browser.

    Mike

  14. Got it, thank you. Out of curiosity I checked our google analytics just to see how many people are accessing our site using Firefox vs other browsers....and according to that 11% of our users use Firefox. I think the bulk of the testing is done in Chrome and Safari before they release. I will pass along to the fellas so they can make adjustments for those Firefox users. Chrome = 45%, Safari = 30%, Firefox = 11%, IE = 4%, Edge = 3%. then a bunch of different mobile browsers making up balance.

I concur with Michael's #12 comment above, but what I found fascinating are the usage statistics above. My usage involves just Safari on my iPad, with several constant glitches involving date/time display and some funky menu jumps; but here's the surprise. On my desktop (a decent Dell running Win10) I use Edge and have not had any of the software, hardware, browser, etc. issues that've been reported here since the roll-out of Ver2. Now I temper that strange news with my continued disappointment with the functionality of Ver2, but it would be interesting to know if any other Edge users have had any difficulties. I'm just surprised that there are so few Edge users, it's not a bad browser platform.

    Mike

  15. Glenn, see above: the stats LineMartel were showing that comments aren't flowing at another site.

    Julie:

Come on, you post a mean argument, compose some pretty decent sentences, but in your haste to create a single minded, Don Quixote style defense for all things PNet you forgot to read what I really said. Your quote below is what caused all this confusion and with all the other issues this poor site has, it doesn't need your dogmatic obstructionism.

QUOTE="Julie H, post: 5599697, member: 3885114"]It would be very helpful if you would provide us links to specific examples. If we can see what these sites are doing, what kind of hundreds of people are willing to critique, what kind of picture hundreds of people want to critique, and what kind of critique such hundreds of people are willing to contribute, we can learn from them how to do p.net better.

It's my contention that people simply don't want to do critiques any more. Period. Old-timers loved it, still love it and want it, but they're the dinosaurs. The rest of the world has found out that, while asking for a critique is essentially free, doing or giving a critique is time- and effort-intensive with no reward. Why on earth would any rational person do such a thing?

The good news for you is that my membership runs out today and I go to join all the other hordes of friends I've made here on PNet in the last 10+ years. Unsubscribed.

    Mike

  16. Earlier in this conversation someone said that people on other sites were receiving much more comments than on this site. What I posted were my own stats from another site showing that this is not so...

Well, all these statistics flying around are hard to follow and without context fall into the, well, that's interesting category. However, I feel obligated to note that I never once said other sites were "receiving much more comments", haven't had the inclination to even try to document any such research, and don't really care except in the undeniable fact that the very few images being posted on PNet for critique are not getting comments. Primarily because there aren't enough active members left to comment.

What I really said is quoted below and I stand behind my comment without hesitation.

other sites where comments are made and hundreds of views occur in a few hours

    Mike

  17. I'll make you a promise. If you fix the site I'll renew my membership and will agree to pay up to $50 a year to offset more (better) programming. If you continue to hunker down, stay on the defensive and insist that the Emperor is indeed wearing a tuxedo, then you get zip... Mike

Offer accepted. What is your one thing that would make a difference near term?

A review of the comment reporting functionality of V1 would be the appropriate guide.

    Glenn:

(Please peruse this thread to update your memory.)

Well, my subscription expires today and "My Activity" is still not sortable so that comments can be easily monitored so I guess our deal is null and void. Even though I'm not having any of the many issues I see reported here in Help, the inability to track my comments and follow other comments on images where I've made comments in a concise and functional manner is the deal breaker, I can't in good faith renew until functionality is restore to the Photo Critique Forum. That is what this whole site is about.... isn't it?
