I agree that the trunk could use more contrast to reinforce the detail. But I am intrigued by the background "noise" -- the intersecting tree branches remind me of a network of blood capilaries, which makes me see the trunk as a neuron, reaching into it. Fun! A slight touch of contrast in the red of the background might reinforce this out, without fighting with the foreground.
