Hello,
I am traveling and visiting in China in January 2011. The itinerary goes from Guangzhou (7 days) to Beijing (3 days) to Huangshan (2 days) to Guangzhou (2 days). The days in Beijing and Huangshan will be with a guided tour. The last time I was in China was 10 years ago, so I am not quite sure what I will be seeing. I am looking for some advice on what to pack.
Here's what I've got:
Nikon D50 body
Nikkor 18-70 DX
Nikkor 70-210 f/4-5.6 D (this thing is ancient)
Sigma 28-80 f/3.5-5.6
35 f/1.8 DX
50 f/1.8
60 f/2.8 macro
Ideally, I'd like to take no more than 1 body and 2 lenses, but I can probably squeeze in a small prime lens somewhere. Any comment is much appreciated. Thank you.
I agree with Jared that you're buying into a system. You can't go wrong with any of the entry-level Nikon
or Canon. Also, if you're on a tight budget, keh.com sells good quality used gear.

My Bags:
1 Lowepro Fastpack 250 for long and out-of-town trips;
1 small, very beat up, ugly, generic green canvas shoulder-bag (inserts inside) for walking around the Los
Angeles area
My Stuff:
Nikon D50,
Nikkor AF 18-70mm DX,
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D (my fav),
Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8,
Nikon AF-D 70-210mm f/4-5.6,
Canon SD1000 (a point-and-shoot),
cleaning kit, first-aid kit, swiss army knife, USB cord, battery chargers, extra SD cards, kleenex, small hand
towel, travel-size packet of Wet Ones.
The Lowepro holds *everything* comfortably, but it looks a tad large on my 5'2" frame. The ugly green bag
usually holds the D50, the 18-70, and the Nifty-Fifty.

I am a Nikon user, but I have a Canon SD1000 that works just fine for me.

Congrats on picking up such a great camera as your first! Since you said you want "one general purpose lens to cover portraits and landscapes day and night", I would vote for a manual focus 50mm f1.8 as the first lens. There's a ton of those on eBay for very cheap.
Also, pick up a good bag.
