Zach and Danny, What about this Asus? I can't seem to touch a Lenovo with the same amount of RAM for around the same price. The best I could find is 4GB.
I can't seem to get onto the website I want tonight. I think I will try this Asus for a basis of comparison. It seems to have more RAM than the average laptop for a decent price. I'm getting a headache going over all this information.
Bill, I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks guys.

-As I stated before, Mac is not an option.

  2.
Well there is a lot of information here, to take into consideration.

Peter, Thank you for the input. I plan on running photoshop, lightroom and I always have other editing software programs running also. So RAM will definitely be considered. So let me understand this quickly, I can purchase a laptop with say an average amount of RAM and then purchase more as I need it?
Parv, I don't think I could go anything smaller than a 11 inch screen, however I do not like the 15:9 ratio I believe it is. Just seems to make photo editing a enormous pain when it comes to horizontal photos. Perhaps it's just minor details. Something lightweight would be nice but not the most necessary. (Though I do like it for plane and train rides.) I cannot imagine that I will be doing very much heavy writing. I do have a desktop at home that I run a lot of my heavy work on. But for ease of editing while traveling, I would like to have something that could keep up. I had a gateway back in college and the thing was awful. Took almost five minutes to load a RAW file on photoshop.
Going by everyone's answers, I am greatly considering either Lenovo or Asus. Now to the Refurbished side of the laptops, has anyone ever done this? Input on the machine would be great. I have been looking, but just by having refurbished phones, I am quite reluctant to do this. What sites have you used?
Thanks to all who have contributed answers.

  3.
Like most, I am in the market for a new laptop. I understand needing more RAM to run my programs. I have too much money that I have invested into PC programs to want to switch over to MAC so for now this is not an option. I am curious however, I have been researching several different brands and have come across some that I have not really heard of. Most photographers I know choose to either run Dell or Sony due to the price. I am not looking to spend more than $600.00 if I can avoid it. So tell me what you know of these "undermarketed" brands. I have heard Asus overheats, as for fujitsu, Lenovo and pc's such as SYX, I am left dumbfounded. Any insight you can give me into the following links would be most helpful. Another question, would it make more sense to get something smaller (i.e. smaller screen) and hookup to my asus monitor? It's 26" which I would think that would be sufficient. But when I am traveling it would be nice to have something that runs faster with a decent screen.

Thank you for your time.

  4.
So to smooth this out even more, did you just use a filter in photoshop? I guess this is what I am confused with because my images never turn out this clean.

It's possible this images was post processed. Honestly it's been a while so I cannot remember if I adjusted any of the original files or not.

  5.
The Lenses I use are a Tamron sp 17-50 f/2.8 and a Tamron af 75-300 1:4-5.6

I want to upgrade but due to a slumlord situation, money had been very tight. But the 17-50 is my favorite lens to use at a wedding, it produces very nice and sharp images yet still allows me to create softer images as well.

Here's a couple of shots, they are from an older wedding, one which I assisted, but the Ceremony photo was taken with the 75-300. And the group shot was taken with the the 17-50. Luckily these were weddings where I assisted so I was able to play around with my camera, but obviously the settings are way off in my opinion. And thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of your input. Any further input is appreciated also. 8)

  6.
I have a d700 that I use as my main camera during a wedding ceremony. Is there a good setting that will expose my photographs evenly when I cannot use flash? Adjusting color temp, and to be less grainy? Some of these photos you see are flawless and they don't use flash! I don't get it. I can spend several minutes editing my photos and make them look pretty good, but honestly, after seeing some of these photographers work, I have a ways to go. What settings would you use? Or would you invest in a camera like a D3x or something?

  7.
I purchased my Q5 less than a year ago, it runs off of a Turbo Battery, and to it I have a Twinlink reciever connected and to that the Receiver is connected to my D700. I was told to run the Q5 on the TTL mode with my Camera.

Here's the problem: I can go to take a photograph and the thing won't fire. It will fire just fine for several shots then suddenly it will not fire. It seems to me that the amount of light in the images is quite inconsistent. I try to play around with it during down times during a wedding reception, but I'm growing very frustrated with the thing. I do believe that it would be a powerful tool but I've read through my manuals, synced everything accordingly and still come up with the results of it not firing for several shots and then all of a sudden it does. Does anyone else ever encounter this problem? If so, have you resolved it? I'm curious to know if it might be something as simple as replacing my twinlink for something more powerful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8.
Shun, I am currently using a Sigma 28-70 f2.8, a Tamron 75-300 4-5.6 tele-macro and I do have a wide angle lens which the stats are currently missing from my head. I do plan on upgrading glass. I know I would like a portrait lens probably around a 50m or and 85m other than that, I am just really getting started on which lenses to purchase. I never thought I would be doing wedding photography but am finding it a bit of a passion now. Do any of you have any other suggestions as far as lenses go? I feel I'm just about sold on purchasing the D700.

  9.
Hello,
I'm sure there have been a thousand posts on this question, but I just want to get down to the answer and not have to search for hours to find what I need.
So my question is this. I'm looking into purchasing a new camera. Currently I've been in business for two and a half years and shoot with my D200. I really would like the D3, I'm not sure I'm sold on the D3x yet. However I'm also looking into the D2x. My budget is about $5,000 for a new camera, possibly $6,000. Would you recommend that I go with the more expensive camera body? Or would the D2x be sufficient? I'll also add that I am mainly doing portrait/wedding photography. I'm contemplating on if I purchase the D2x, I'll use the left over money to invest in some upgraded lighting equipment. What do you think would be the best decision?

  10.
Thank you to all that have responded. I'm looking to use the D40 as a camera to always have with me on an assignment should my d200 stop functioning. I have worked alongside other photographers who have had these types of situations occur, and they have had to turn to my camera. I want to have a plan. I have used the d70s and it is a nice camera, but it would be nice to have a smaller one that can fit easily into my already over-packed bag. You have been quite helpful.

  11.
I have decided that I would like to have a back up camera just in case my d200 breaks on me. I do not have enough money at this time to invest in a very expensive camera, but it would be nice to know that if something happens to my d200, I would be okay with a backup. I was thinking of purchasing the d40. Thoughts on this? Or do you have other suggestions as to what might be a cheap yet dependable and good quality backup? Also, it would be nice to have a camera that can use the same lenses as my d200, any advice that you could give me would be great.

  12. Well, I've looked at the camera thoroughly and have sort have fixed the problem, it seemed to have been the red eye, so hopefully I will not have any more problems! Thank you!
  13. I shoot with a NikonD200. I really do love the camera. I also shoot with a small sb600 flash. Just recently I noticed

that from the time I click the shutter button on the camera, my flash (both built in and off camera) takes a long time

to fire. I have to hold down the shutter button and either flash will flash off and on for about six seconds and then it

will eventually take the picture. What is going on? I have been shooting with this equipment for two years and have

never had a problem. At first I thought it was the off camera flash, but it happens with my built in flash as well. This is

not acceptable. I have a feeling it has something to do with the camera's sensor, but I am not entirely familiar with

the technology. It began to happen to me towards the end of a wedding reception. Embarassing! If anyone has any

idea whatsoever please share it with me.

  14. Robyn, I have offically been in business for about six months now. Over the summer my clientelle stepped up to a new level. Another piece of advice that I can add to help you with your success, is to join a city chamber committee. The day I presented my new business was the smartest thing that I have done so far. Many of the members are hard workers with a family and I made sure to market straight to them. I handed a ton of business cards out to the lot of them and they began to come to me. When they saw my work and were pleased, they referred their friends to me. Good Luck! I hope things go well for you.
  15. So, I've been doing portraits for a while now. I also have an office job on the side. It seems that everyone's picture is

outdated and they want to know if I would take a new one for them. I live in the twin cites and I have checked out

numerous websites. The prices are all over! I was thinking that $50.00 for an executive portrait would be plenty. I

would also include a digital file for them to use as they usually don't order prints of themselves. Is this reasonable?

Am I charging too much or too little? I really have no idea. I don't want to be proex, but I don't want to charge

outrageous prices either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    -Kali

  16. I want to put a website up for my new photography business. I dont know enough

about building websites to even begin to build my own from scratch. I have

heard about Bludomain.com and their templates look really nice, better than I

could ever build at least. But I would like to know if anyone here uses them or

has used them? Have they hosted with them as well? I would appreciate as much

feedback from as many people can give me.
