1.
Mr Laur thanks!

Chris, good guess. Yes sir! Honda CB. Roadracing in washington is called WMRRA.

You can see more at www.wmrra.com

I just figured this nice and tight photo will show what I'm saying. I'd never see clarity through the visor that clearly, at 80 mph, in a D300 shot. Which is why I used this as an example.

At any rate, I'd probably love the D600, but I'd lose out on focal length, when I'm already stretched thin. D7000 I'd be back to a consumer camera. Hopefully something comes this month. Lets hope!

  2.
Just a quick example, yes I realize I'm not shooting at the same turn. But I am using the same lens. Just wanted to show some sort of image quality, depth of the full frame versus cropped body, and how its even noticable on motorsports. Most people see the fx/dx conversation and think weddings and landscapes. Thought i'd share a few outdoor sport photos for you guys.

D700: http://www.darrenbeattyphotography.com/photos/i-4cmHHh4/0/X2/i-4cmHHh4-X2.jpg

D300 at same track/conditions: http://www.darrenbeattyphotography.com/photos/i-VqRLGC7/0/X2/i-VqRLGC7-X2.jpg

  3.
WOW!

You guys rock. Theres actually conversation, not much yelling, and good suggestion without going way over topic. I just need to read more photo.net forum threads.

I personally quit reading forums a few years ago because of all the negitivity. I want to thank everyone for their responses. Especially those on page 2.

I have not used SD cards since I sold my Nikon D50 :-)

For those wondering what I do, (since I havent updated my photo profile in years)... I do have a "little" bit of a unique situation. Up here in Seattle, i'm a contracted photographer for all the 2 wheeled motorcycle racing. I've been through my third D300, I shoot a lot, and edit little. My sales are based off of quantity, (and I'd hope a little quality :) as well) but the reason i posted this, is exactly what one member mentioned regarding speed/quality/CF cards.

Last year, for fun, I took my D700 out and used it with my 300 f/2.8 at f4.5-5.5 throughout the day. I knew the IQ would be better... but i didnt think it would be good enough that when I went back to my D300, i felt like I was using a D40. The image quality REALLY stood out in these motorcycle shots and my sales for the weekend doubled... Please remember I'm out ON the track, not 200 feet away. So I have objects coming at me at 60-160mph. I cannot afford a 5k dollar 200-400 f/4, so I'm stuck with my 300.

Back to the reality at hand. I will seriously consider your guys' statements regarding SD cards. I just figured it was silly "going back" but if some of you have, and dont mind... it sounds good to me. Thanks for this suggestion.

Secondly, I was really hoping for a D400 type release because of the things stated by a recent post. You dont want to lose speed for quality. You also dont want to lose focal length for quality. These two reasons alone, are why I've been holding out for 2 years. My D300 is as tired as a 1991 honda civic. I just hope she holds off for another half season.

Thanks again for your guys' insightful posts.

  4.
Shun, Jonathan, C Watson, thanks guys. Sorry for another thread. I was too lazy to filter through 100 threads.

I guess my thread was also based on the fact that I'm more suprised its been this long and/or that Nikon hasnt released any further info as to the "why" behind taking so long. More than just the typical thread complaint.

But thanks for your replies none the less.

  5.
I am sure this has been brought up time and time again... but are any other shooters losing faith in Nikon? Why on EARTH is it taking YEARS for a D300 replacement? I've gone through 2 shutters on my D300 and I dont want to jump ship to a D600 because I dont want to revert back to SD cards.

Does ANYONE have any ACTUAL FACTUAL information as to when Nikon might come out with an actual DX framed/ CF Card slangin camera? I could care less about the size of the files. I want upgraded sensor/ISO, and most of all just better dynamic range like I get in my D700. When I'm working out on the race track my D300 photos now are looking so dull to me compared to my D700.

Anyway, if anyone has any info that would be great. Shun?

  6.
Josh, sorry to hear.

Is it possible to contact someone on the phone for a faster reply for what to do, from Cameta?

I have purchased multiple things from Cameta, and they have all been stellar products with no issues. The only thing i do not appreciate is the upselling. They ask if you want to add this or that at the last minute.

  7. Welp. Im back!

Boy am I UNLUCKY. Palm Springs/Indio areas get like 1" of rain a year, and I'm there when they get over 3". No but seriously, it downpoured thursday night, and into friday morning, so we went to Mexico on Friday. I knew of the possible consequences of having a dslr in Mexico.... but this wasnt Tiajuana, it was Algadones. Though, after parking our cars on the Arizona side, we were walking up to the border (anyone is free to go to Mexico, no papers, or stops) Just have your passport to come back........ Anyway guy stated that if a mexican police officer sees you taking a photo of a mexican citizen, you'll go to jail. And that there was a american photographer who is still in jail and awaiting trial..... anyway, that was enough for me to put my camera back in my vehicle.... That is after I walked around a bit and made sure no one saw me or was following me. My cam stuff is insured, just didnt want my uncles car broken into. So, so far, we're at NO joshua tree because of rain, and snow in the hills. And no camera in mexico because i value my life/freedom.

So, saturday was a relaxing day, weather went from hot to a light shower, to hot to a light shower.... and then we saw that sunday was supposed to be good in the afternoon. So we slept in, and on sunday afternoon, my buddy Jason, and my parents, and I jumped into the car and hit up Joshua Tree NP.

What pops said was true. Some tips for Joshua tree visitors.....

1. ENTER FROM THE NORTH! The entire park is on a slant. and if you drive from the south, to the north, you miss out on a lot of shots unless your eyes are glued to your rearview mirror. (which I did) because you are constantly driving uphill. Why not drive downhill, and see so much more, so much easier!?

2. North is good. South is meh. The northern 20 miles of the park are absolutely amazing. Some of the craziest formations, rocks, and vegetation I have ever seen. There were times when it felt like we were driving through mars, or something creepy. The southern 40 miles are good, but nothing compared to the north.

3. They have great camping, and the bathrooms are spotless. Again, camp grounds are all to the north.

4. Buy a year pass. If you have a pass, only 30 bucks, its good for EVERYONE in the car. If you get a individual day pass, you waste money, especially if theres a chance you'd be back within a year.

5. Temps are decieving. In the town of Joshua tree, and Indio, the two neighboring cities to the north and south of the park, were a "cool" 70 degrees when we left town, and we were 30 feet below sea level, and in a tshirt and shorts and 45 min later, it was 39 degrees with 30-60+ mph gusts, at 4-5,000 feet with pants over my shorts, and a sweatshirt on, and i could barely feel my fingers and ears with the gusts strong enough to move my tripod. But hey, we were there, and the clouds broke for a few minutes, so I popped the cam onto the tripod and took a few shots. Glad I didnt woose out because of the wind, and temps. I got off the plane and straight to work, so i wont see any results til tomorrow/wednesday....... hope i got a few nice keepers!
  8. Hi all. Just typed this out and lost it. So lets try a shorter version........ Flying down to Indio to visit my parents.... Going to Joshua Tree NP on Friday, my uncle and father went to pre-check out the park for me (which i thought was pretty damn nice of them!) and they stated that the items I might want to focus on, are up North, so we were planning on heading to the north end of the enterance, and working south. Taking photos, but also looking for that "perfect" sunset photo location. Since I get one day, one sunset down there.

Any suggestions for Joshua Tree? Anything else particularly interesting in the Indio CA area? I also noted a few posts on Salton Sea Lake?

We are heading to Mexico/Yuma, AZ for saturday. Any tips that may help us maximize my photo ops while down there is very much appreciated! Thanks again,

  9.
Hi all, I have been a part of Photo.net for two years now, and I am really noticing the site lagging speed. My portfoli

  10. ok guys. I owe a big thanks to all of you. My woes are 99% fixed! AF is lightening fast and so much more sharp, the battery goes 3k shots instead of 1600 from a D200. Only thing now is my aftermarket MBD300, doesnt seem to work unfortunately. It makes the body think the battery is dead. Thats frustrating!

Anyway thanks all for the firmware links.

  11. Thanks guys. Figures. My serial is "invalid." Looks like i WONT be upgrading. It already has 1.02 on it. As for the settings. I have the camera ready to roll. Scott, thanks for pointing that out, I was unaware. I could see how if you were shooting from the exact same spot that that setting would be acceptable. I have it set to Dynamic 21 point now, and AF lock off.

Scott as for my lens, its nearly new. Its the 80-400mm, APO DG, internal focus, IS (VR) lens. Its focus is fast IMO.

    We shall see.

  12. Shun, why have you not upgraded? I will be upgrading tonight.... I shoot a racing school event tomorrow all day, and I will once again try the new settings out. And fill you in on how it worked. I'll especially try the clicking the multi butoon to recenter AF haha. Newb!
