1.
Thanks Shun! That made me feel better if it is still within specs although I am still within the 30-day exchange period.

Another topic. With the availability of 20MP, I compared the 16-85mm with three older primes, 20mm/2.8D, 35mm/2.0D and 50mm/1.8, at F8 at the same focus lengths. The 16-85 is almost the same as the 20mm and 50mm in terms of resolution and contrast. But it is NO comparison to the wonderful 35/2.0D!!

I was a bit surprised that 20mm and 50mm are not better.

I found some problems with the new D500 AF. I tried test several Nikon lenses using both this method,
https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/51633/~/how-to-use-the-af-fine-tune-function
and the on-board method,
http://nps.nikonimaging.com/technical_solutions/d5_tips/af/auto_af_fine-tuning/.

Consistently, only the 16-85mm AF-S needs no adjustment. Some older ones, 50mm/f1.8, 35mm/f2D, 80-200/f2.8D, all need to adjust to about "-10".

These lenses all focus dead-on on the good old D300.

However, shooting soccer using the same 80-200 on D500 produced a lot more keepers than on the D300.

So, no questions about the power and speed of the D500 AF. But it's accuracy shooting static object is problematic.

Did I get a bad sample???

  4.
Is it correct that the LCD display for "shots remaining before buffer fills" is only 2-digit, like "r99", even it could be 200?

It only shows "r99" for basic jpeg.

It shows "r29" for RAW. That is 14 bit, no compression. I did verify that I could only get about 50 pictures in the CH burst. So, that "r29" did mean 29.

For these two settings, I did turn off the ADL, other noise reductions and other distortion corrections.

Any idea the buffer size I have seen is so much lower than the 200 in the spec?

Thanks!

  5.
Hello,

My setup is, D500 (firmware: C 1.01, LD 2.013) + Windows 10.

In MS File Explorer, preview thumbnails don't display properly for the NEF files. I tried associating NEF files with either the default MS Photo viewer or Irfanview. That doesn't help.

Also the camera info and shooting info are blank when I right-click on an NEF files and look at Details.

NEF file icons from the good old D300 work as expected in File Explorer.

Just wondering it is only me.

Do D500 NEF thumbnails/icons work correctly in Mac world?

Thanks!

  6.
My MB-D10 Battery Pack was working well with my D300 before. I switched to using the internal battery and left the MB-D10 on the shelf for the last few month. Now I'm ready to put the MB-D10 on for the soccer season.
However, the D300 just refuses to recognize the batteries from the MB-D10, regardless I use regular AA size or rechargeable. When the internal battery is there, the dials on the Battery Pack do work. But the batteries on the Battery Pack don't. The only thing I can think of is that the electric contacts on the D300 got dirty. I didn't use the D300 in a rough environment the last few months and I did clean the electric contacts. Any ideas??

  7.
All,
I like to share my recent experience of using Nikin Service with you.
I bought a new Nikon 80-200mm/2.8D ED from KEH.com in October of 2009. Before that, I returned two Excellent grade used ones due to obvious back-focus issues. The new one also got the similar AF issue. I tested the AF using http://focustestchart.com/focus21.pdf I have other lenses and more than one DLSR bodies. All other lens-body combinations are fine. So, it is indeed the 80-200's own issue.
Last month I sent the lens to Nikon Service to Melville, NY for repair. It is still in extented warrenty. The lens came back in less than 2 weeks.
Now the AF is more accurate. Maybe there is still a tad of back-focus. It was a "Rank B2" repair, meaning replacing major components?
The interesting thing is a note that came back with the lens. http://www.photo.net/photo/10788611
"Older lens not consistently sharp on DSLR"?? Any one heard of this before?

00Vxpj-227871684.thumb.jpg.f1a0150bb86698a046cb2da447efd9cc.jpg

  8. D100 + 50/1.8AF puzzle

I mounted the Nikon 50mm/1.8 AF (non-D) on D100 today by mistake and unearthed

    a mystry!

What happens is that the shutter almost never fires when I focus at a remote,

contrasty object, say the skyline more than 500 feet away. Because the focusing

indicator is not on! But the lens does move and I can tell from the viewfinder

that it is actually focused. It appears that lens doesn't send the focus info

back to the camera. I use single area AF. The problem stays no mather which of

the five AF sensors I use.

However, it works fine when I point to an closer object ( within 100 feet) or a

less contrasty object. That is the reason I never ran into that before in

years. I always use the 50/1.8 indoor as a portrait lens.

What puzzles me is that other lenses works fine on D100. And the 50/1.8 also

works fine on N80 at infinity! I already cleaned the electrical contacts on

both D100 and 50/1.8. But it didn't make any difference!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Steve

  9. I have both because still shoot slides.

The optical quality of the 28-105 is better because only the sweet spot of glass is used on DSLR. The 28-105 also reaches further if you like to use the long end. The 28-105 also provides the semi-macro mode that allows you to get closer and fill the frame more. But it is not as wide.

The 18-70 is wider on DSLR, obviously. But it suffers from vignetting when wide open at both the long end and wide end. The edges are not as sharp as the 28-105 on DSLR (see my samples). It is a tad darker than the 28-105 (see my samples). The AF is quieter than that of 28-105 but the AF speed is about the same.

I decide which one to mount on D100 based on my mood. :-)
