was in Patagonia and those were the exact lenses he was using.

They might be time-saving, but they still need to be fine-tuned for the image you happen

to be working on.

 

My goal for this renewed hobby is to get the picture right in camera. The computer is

going to be used mainly to store/archive the image and print it. Maybe and Auto Levels

and quick sharpen and to the printer.

so you're dialing up a bit on the contrast a saturation, right? That's +1 (or 1 right of the 0)?

 

I'm curious, but have you tried increasing your sharpness to 4 or 5 and, if so, what did you

think?

What's your opionion on shooting in aRGB color space as opposed to sRGB?

 

I thought I read where shooting aRGB and then converting to sRGB in Photoshop would give

better results. But if not, then why not just shoot in sRGB.

 

My son, again, told me that most using aRGB were commercial photographers and printers.

He said that my printer would not recognize the benefits of aRGB.

My son showed me his Jpeg and RAW test and we saw subtle differences in each shooting

scenario. The difference was always small and, honestly, a coin toss as to which one was

actually preferable. This knowledge gives me the motivation to learn the camera better so

that I get it right when I press the shutter button.

Kent, thanks for the link. However, I don't want to mess with plug-ins. I did get my son's

copy of photoshop CS2. That should be more than I need. I don't like fancy things that add

more to the already complex picture.

It's my understanding that there are certain "user defined" settings that replicate certain films

and this is what I want to know about.

 

If you don't know about this then it's OK to admit it.

 

My son informs me that that Jpeg will be fine for my type of photography...that the 10%

gained under challening light is not worth the effort in my case. I DO know how to analyze

the histogram and I'm quite good at taking my time to nail the exposure, so this RAW issue is

a mute with me.

I was ready to buy a point and shoot digital after leaving photography for 20 years. Right before I was

going to buy, my son decided to give me his 5D. So I now have way more camera than I bargained for.

 

I've decided that I'm only going to shoot Jpeg/aRGB because I like the idea of shooting more images and

discarding of most.

 

My question is, how do I replicate certain films? What settings do you use to get certain film-like looks?

What matters is that helpful people here seem to have the short answer I'm looking for. I like

the quick-start guide to most everything. Folks that want to learn every little detail about

things miss out on the real meaning of life. Today, I embraced technology by photgraphing a

personal check and uploading it to my son's account. What a world we live in!

Really, my son thanks you. He's getting a very nice-size check to take care of his recent

camera purchase. It's so funny, I'm getting back into photography after 20 years with a

$400.00 purchase of camera, media card and batteries. My son, who's never done

photography, goes and buys himself a Canon 5D, assorted lenses, a new computer and

software. No wonder he needs financial help!

Using CS2, how do I edit an image to 200 DPI?

 

I need to scan/photograph a check for deposit into my bank. The picture needs to be 200 DPI, jpeg, and

grey scale.

 

I intend to set Canon 5D to lowest setting jpg.

 

I often resize images, just not used to DPI settings.

My neighbor says I'd be wasting my money on the G7. First, the A640 has a swivel screen, which I will use. The G7 does not. Next, the G7 has nothing on the A640 image-wise. Next, the A640 is more reasonably priced so it will be easier for me to justify another digital camera purchase a year or so down the line. Finally, I will never use 200mm zoom or flash. So you see, it makes no sense to pay a premium for the G7. The A640 will do everything I need and more.

This is the kind of photography I'll be doing, so the A640 seems to be the best best. I'm also

getting a Ritech 4gb sd card.

Likely i'd use the A640 in manual focus mode for any fast moving action requiring fast image

capture. I tried it on my friends and it was an entirely fast enough response. But most of my

photography is going to be Urban/Fine Art without moving subjects. Fast image capture not

essential.

 

Leo, I'll be using Mpix for prints. I've heard very good things about them. Probably 10 - 20

8.5x11 each month. My neighbor raves about them and, I must say, the samples he showed

me were out of this world.

I last used a camera in 1988. It was a Nikon FM manual focus camera with a 50mm

lens on it. I used it on a summer vacation in London where I shot an entire

brick of slide film.

 

Fast-forward nearly 20 years, I was reviewing some of those images and I've now

got the desire to do some more photography. But I can't find my camera. My

neighbor suggested that I buy a digital camera. I tried his Canon A640 and I

was, in fact, impressed. I do have a computer and various electronic gadgets,

so I'm not a complete fish out of water.

 

I can't imagine that there's too much difference from one digital camera to

another, but I do notice that canon seems enjoy the greatest market share for

digital cameras. Millions of people can't be wrong, right?

 

So, because I was so impressed with my neighbor's A640, I think I'm going to

pick one up. I plan to do Urban and Fine Art photography.

 

Anything else I'll need besides the camera and computer?
