I thought of this photo specifically today. I don't know what triggered it, but I came here just to find it and I am glad that it's still here, still open to interpretation, still lovely. I think that this is what art is meant to do.

  1. Marko, I hardly ever fly. Not out of fear, just opportunity. But I did go on two short air trips this month, and sat by the window both times. Even with all the noise and clutter of other passengers on a commercial flight, I just disappeared into the clouds, and thought so much about every one of your photographs. What it must be like for you when you pilot yourself out over scenes a thousand times more enchanting than midwestern America. Wow, I don't know how you get anything else done in your life. Especially when you are able to bring back these kinds of moments. Every one of them is peace and wonder and light. Okay, maybe not the forest fire one, but you know what I mean :)

These are photos from my son's U.S. Army basic training graduation ceremony. I could barely talk, I just followed him (them) around. The sheer numbers of young men acting with complete precision and valor and pride. It was humbling and shook me to my knees at times. I didn't even recognize my own boy the first time he appeared. Leaving him there for another six weeks hurt like hell.

    Thanks, Brian :)

I thought about a tighter crop, but I think that part of what's important about this scene, is knowing that these are kids (100% paid college tuition,) that they're midwestern kids (Indiana,) and that they're midwestern kids being taken off into service (National Guard.) So I opted to keep those textual elements in. Plus I like having more than just that one sad face showing. Some of those kids were perfectly ready to go, no hesitation. And no, I didn't turn the camera on the families. The mom looked like she could snap me like a twig.

Hi, it's me again. I still love this. In fact, I was just sitting here thinking about it as I was searching for a moment's peace, and just had to sign in and find it. Your art affects me so much, Marko.
  2. Oh my God, Brad, I LOVE this. I've been paying so much attention to your street portraits, I haven't taken the time to go back and feel through the other types of work you have represented here. This is in all ways outstanding.
