1. I finally found a vendor who has quite a few 43.5mm filters still sat

around - they're normally very rare. All it took was some digging

through the floor level shelves. Anyway, these filters are brand new,

but look like they were made years ago - totally different packaging

to modern Kenko products. I picked up a red (R-1) and an orange (YA3),

but was then baffled by the rest of my choices. I think they're

perhaps for colour correction, but can anyone tell me what the

following do? I googled, but had no success:

P00, P01, C2, C4, C12, W2, W10, W12

There was also UV(SL-39) and skylight, perhaps the same? I think I'll

get one, but are the rest any use to me? Correction for older film

types? They also had a *lot* of close-up filters, of varying

strengths, which I'll probably pass on. A good afternoon!

  2. Paul - I just got an Iskra, but haven't looked into filtration yet. I once thought that living in Japan would give me a fair chance of finding any filter, but my Olympus 43.5mm filter quest has disabused me of that. So, yes, I'd be interested if the price was right. A step up ring would also allow a hood to be used. As to what to step up to, 37mm would seem like the best option, looking at what Kenko offer for example. One thing I've noticed is that digital cameras have some whacky small filter sizes - none of those work?
  3. Two camps:
1) It's just a Bessa R2 with proven technology digicam parts. It should be $1500.
2) It's the first of a kind, totally different market to anything else, $2800 is OK as nothing else does what it does.

The twain shall never meet. Doesn't really matter though. If CV/Epson can sell every RD-1 at $3000 to camp 2 people, and it certainly looks like they can, then they're hopefully going to be encouraged enough to build a cheaper RD-2 or RD-3 for us whingers in camp 1. ;o)
One comment on pricing for function - why would anyone buy a Digilux 2, even though the identical Panasonic DMC-LC1 is 25% cheaper?

  4. Cheapest price in Japan is now listed at about $2800. Bic Camera at the top of Ginza usually has the Leica range behind glass, but currently has a display stand so anyone can go and play with an MP (black paint), M7, M6TTL, Bessa R2, Hexar RF and the RD1. The RD-1 really feels like very little camera for $2800, digital or no. Plasticky. Given that the technology is only up to the D70 or Rebel-D's standard, then at most it should be $1500, even including a generous mark-up for the obviously lower volumes...
