I guess I must be easy to please but I have been getting 16"x20" prints from White House Custom Color <whcc.com> all
summer using up interpolated files from my D40 (to 300ppi CS3 Bicubic Larger). The originating NEF is 6 mpx. The detail
and general rendition basically knocks me out..... just generally speaking. Even viewed quite closely, there is to my way of
seeing, plenty of detail. If the shot fails, its not because there is not enough resolution.
I never understand these discussions.....most of the time, even monitor resolution (> 100 ppi ?) looks great to me at
comfortable viewing distance. Also, very few of my large B&W prints from years ago have nearly as much "working" detail
as I can get from my D40......the only thing I really miss is that with TriX, you could misjudge the correct exposure by a
country mile and still get a print (1-2 stops).

the question is what are they charging for the 18-200 ?? sounds like a car dealer who gives you a generous trade on your
old car against "sticker" on the new one...
doubt you will ever use the kit lens but it does make for a smaller more packable rig for social situations where the tele end
of the 18-200 would be of little use....

This is not an unimportant question though.......there is an awful lot of layered, super
saturated, HDR, stuff that everyone seems to be pushing out, and its is
"reallygreattolookat" and very difficult to do even...I can't.....but this stuff tends to get
disconnected from some kind of realness or validness, becomes eye candy......
I am not much of a photographer but I am a pretty good recording engineer (who likes to
take a few snaps) and in the music world you really have to have some kind of a
performance, composition, or a lyric or you are just shining you know what. Sure you can
pile on the effects, and the reverb, and edit, and auto tune, and on and on.....(in guess
what - a Mac - I've got Photoshop right above ProTools in my Applications folder in the
studio) but the result is usually vacuous........

I would place shutter/focus/LCD lag way in front of being stuck with excessive DOF as the
primary P+S liability, followed by inability to see, either through totally inadequate optical
viewfinder or a washed out LCD and this is coming from a guy who just bought a G7, and
its pretty good, but you really do a different kind of "shooting". It should be called
"fishing" because you take a shot and then chimp to see if you got anything worthwhile
(squinting at the screen).....if not blast away again......that's really the method for this
generation......and that is VERY powerful in a way....because you know you have
something....but so much stuff just goes right by.....
and the dslr guys just aim and machine gun away....and they can't see very well either
because everyone is running around with zooms that start at 3.5....with not so hot
pentaprisms.....
..so its an altogether different way of shooting.....I remind myself how much easier it used
to be to get THE shot every time I grab the old F3 and take a peak through the Nikor
50mm 1.4....like WOW!......and it was really so easy to focus and then usually you are ready
to go right NOW
