  1. I used the built in flash on my D300 for the first time and noticed that it was unusually noisy. Just

before the flash fires there is a buzzing sound. Almost like what a mosquito would make. I never noticed

this with my D200. Anyone else experiencing this? It is kind of annoying, but the flash seems to be

working fine. I believe the D300 inherited its built in flash from the D200. Correct?

    Thanks in advance

  2. I really to need to buy a grip so that I can better balance some of my heavier lenses. Can anyone

comment on the build quality of the MB-D10 grip for the D300. It isn't exactly cheap at $249 and I don't

want to buy it if it has the same crappy build quality of the MB-D200. Do the battery clips look sturdy?

    Thanks in advance

  3. Thom Hogan has also recently posted his review of the Sigma 10-20 mm. It's not a fast lens

by any stretch of the imagination, but if you read his reviews of the other choices that exist,

you'll see that wide and fast don't really exist for DX lenses. in terms of the D200 vs D300, I

think it's worth the extra $$ for the D300 and it will be the latest DX technology for at least

2 years since Canon just came out with the 40D. I own both the D300 and D200 and I am

just amazed by how much of an improvement the D300 is. At least try shooting a D300

before you plunk down the $$ for the D200.

  4. I had the same problem trying to find the lens but was able to find one about a week ago at

BH Photo. Check the website frequently. Their price was very competitive at $1,624, but

stock sells out within 1 day. The D3 and D300 introductions must have definitely renewed

    interest in this lens.

  5. Why is he using the 70-200 VR and 70-300 VR to test a D300? It always baffles me why

tester's match a semi-pro camera w/ amateur level glass. He complains about some purple

fringing and vignetting. Duh! What do you expect w/ this type of glass. Also, he contradicts

himself by saying that the D300 is not intended for the p&s crowd, but concludes saying that

the D300 would make a nice first digital SLR. I feel these reviews are written simply to

generate website traffic. Sorry if I am being harsh.

  6. Hi,

Anyone know why this lens is so tough to find? It is practically out of stock at most reputable retailers.

The ones that have it in stock are charging the full retail of $1,799 which is too high IMHO. Does Nikon

have production problems? Also, what is a good street price for this lens? The lowest I have seen in

recent months is $1,599 at J&R or $1,625 at BH Photo. I wonder if D300 and upcoming D3 sales have

driven up demand for this lens.

    Thanks

  7. Make sure to take at least 3 or more compact flash cards. If one of the cards craps out on

you, you will probably pay much more for a replacement than in the US. Obviously you will

also need an adapter to convert the power adapter for the d200 battery charger. I would also

buy at least 2 spare batteries. If you have an ac adapter, try to avoid connecting the d200

directly to an outlet. Power surges and voltage fluctuation is very common through out India.

Also, avoid food that is not well cooked and water that is not bottled or else you will spend 3

days sitting on the toilet and won't be able to shoot sh*t. No pun intended.

  8. Not to sound like a jerk, but I think you should get opinions only from people who

actually own both lenses and I happen to be one of them. There is no comparison between

the two lenses. The 70-300 is much sharper than the 18-200 across the board. I suppose

the sharpness will not make a difference if you will be printing 8 x 10 or smaller. However,

larger images will be a day and night difference. The 18-200 is nice lens, but it has been

hyped way too much, especially by guys such as Ken Rockwell. Also, I think many of the

praises of this lens are from people who are upgrading from p&s cameras. Duh! Obviouslly

the 18-200 rocks compared to any p&s. I love the 18-200 for its combination of

convenience and image quality. If convenience is your number one priority, then the

18-200 is a great choice. If image quality is more important, then the 70-300 will be a

better choice for the zoom range. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare the 70-300 to the

80-400 or 70-200 F2.8. Both those are heavy lenses. The 70-300 is at the threshold of

what I would call a walk around lens in terms of weight. Good luck and if you really want

to find out go ahead and buy a lense from a place like amazon.com that doesn't charge

restocking fees. I won't comment on the Sigma since I don't own one.

  9. Hi guys & gals,

I need to buy a fast zoom lens around the $1k mark mainly for fast action sports like tennis. Anyone own

either one of these lenses? I like the $8XX price of the Sigma, but am concerned about reliability. Sigma

doesn't exactly have a bullet proof reputation. The Nikon is also attractively priced but I am concerned

that the auto focusing speed will be too slow for sports. Any opinions or other recommendations? Yes, I

would love to own the 70-200 2.8 VR, but is just too expensive, even used.

    Thanks in advance

  10. Why not buy the body and lens separately? I recently purchased both (last week). I paid $1363 for the body at Amazon.com and $799 for the lens from J&R. Total: $2,162 or over $100 cheaper than the combo. The body is usually in stock, but the lens comes and goes. I'm surprised demand is still so high at this time. I have always had good experience purchasing from Amazon and J&R.

    Good luck

  11. Hi,

I have a Rebel XTi and a couple of L series lenses. I wish my camera was built as well as the lenses.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has experience using the XTi in harsh climates. I will be traveling

later this year to Dubai, Egypt, India and Europe in the winter. Naturally I will be encountering hot, humid,

and dusty conditions, as well as very cold temperatures. Buying a $3k pro body is not an option at this

point, but I would consider a 30d. Don't shoot me, but I am also considering selling the Xti and L series

lenses in exchange for the Nikon D200. It seems much more rugged than the semi-pro Canon offerings.

    Thanks in advance.
