<p>...cheap & fast, blindly running after profits and here we go recession... you have a photographer on premises and you still asking, 3-5min in Photoshop-huh! it takes people to see light for years and some never going to see it to the certain point, it is illusion that gem box or light box going to replace a pro or amateur with right set of skills. That’s why when you open industry magazines you’ll see just a few really good pictures, and the rest is just crap. Some setting samples of the giant web retailers, but they are big Name (certain "trust") with huge inventory...I'm working within diamond industry and i see it all around...It's just misunderstanding... Don't take it personally thought and there is no anger:-)... Best regards,</p>

<p>Hi, as usual advice, the book must have. Light: Science and magic<br>
I assume you have a tripod and some kind of lighting. Place your camera perpendicular to the coin look through the viewfinder or life view mode and move the light see what happens, now you can make a tube out of translucent vellum (or a gallon milk bottle with cut of top, hilarious but still), it's going to have flat look. Also you can use reflector on opposite side of light. As of f-stop experiment in AV mode. Have Fun!<br>

<p>Hi, i dont know, what Katrin have in her book, but maybe reading "Photoshop Channel Chops" will give you a good look from inside, plus lynda.com have a advanced course on masking, check calculations, apply image, color range, pen tool, lassotool etc. etc as Patrick mentioned "Theres no *one button - one trick - do them all*"</p>

<p>Nope! Photo retouching existed at end of 18 century... At first i want to say, if you see a book that shows you some "new" technique, just buy it if you can. A month later you’ll be ahead of time... It's only you would know if was helpful for you, for example methods used by Jean-Sébastien <br /><a href="../learn/digital-photography-workflow/techniques-tips/image-retouching/advanced-skin-softening/index.adp">http://www.photo.net/learn/digital-photography-workflow/techniques-tips/image-retouching/advanced-skin-softening/index.adp</a><br />don't work for me, but greatly for him. There also lynda.com is great learning resource.<br />Best regards,</p>

<p>Here is another vote for Lynda.com - definitely got great skill for teaching,<br>
also you can check this one here<br>

<p>Sounds like calibration...Also there different ways of D&B, but essentially 'all do same thing e.g. curves, overlay or softlight layer, the amount of it depend on what is your creative decision, or what kind of work you do e.g. skin work or creative adjustments or whatever you do...<br>
Best regards,<br>

Hi, your best bet is Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting (Paperback)
It wont take you long to read the book, then buy, rent, macro lens, play with light, read it again.
Believe it or not then a lot of things will start making sense, at some point you will need help with photoshop, if you cant do it yourself, somone else will do it for you.
-
Hi, at first i also recommend "Light - Science & Magic" ,
once you ok with lighting even off camera flash will help you to get adequate result.

Hi Edward, Michael have answered the question, and it subject matter what you going to photograph...And if you have the view camera already just try different setups, then it become more clear and the questions will be less general...

Edgar

I'm using 120MM AM-ED-Macro Nikkor with sinar 4x5, little over 1:1
with great result. But search this forum there a lot info on macro lenses and subject matter.

Agree with Mark, one decent strobe with Umbrella or softbox or translucent fabric panels and white foamcore will do wonders!
-
The last time time i spoke to Sinar, the film version should be out february or march but who knows...You can contact SinarBron in New Jersey.
-
First the lighting should be right(in your vision)and not to try to do impossible things. General retouching it's all up to you or your client. I'm sure you have the look you want to have....

Don't get me wrong, the 6008AF excellent tool,
but if you going with db the adapter kit will
cost you pretty amount. Where did you get this price?
The body alone will be ~4300... so it should be around 7k.
Now take price of 6008AF+digital adapter kit and compare
to Hy6 (film version) and see it in long run.
Unless he have a job to do today...
-
...maybe it's wise(?how long)idea to wait for Hy6(film version)
-
There is no another building across the street...
...The show looked like wedding oriented, no surprice thought...had a chance to play with Sinar Hy6 seems promising and pretty light(with kit lens of course), but not sure if it going to show up in next 8 weeks, even Rollei 6008AF not around also.

Canon Rebel XT, XTi or EOS 30D Tamron 90 macro or Canon 100mmm macro or Canon T/S 90mm. Any combination will work. The technique will matter more... Huh and get ready for retouching.

Ed

Hi Vadim, I?m in the same field (jewelry photography).
I have setup with 5D and macro lenses.
I'm about to get mamiya rz67 with t/s adapter+ 140mm macro and DB.
Then I?m planning to get arca-swiss 4x5f or
As Erik mentioned Rollei X-act seems interesting solution,
but I didn?t, look deeply into this system. Oh and there is
Fuji GX680iii pro also has t/s, but this one discontinued
and i'm not sure if there is support for this system.
Once I get my set up I?ll post some img.
Best regards,
Edgar

Hi, I understand that the choice is personal but I?ll appreciate any advice,
how to choose digital back (budget about 20k). I just want to hear from a
person who is working with digital backs, any advice or feedback, any cons.
Thank You!
