1.
Not sure if this thread is still active and you may have gone off to Africa already...nevertheless, I live in South Africa and regularly go on safari. My two cent's worth is that long lenses for tourists can be counter productive for various reasons. First you tend to live your experience through the lens, which stops you appreciating the bigger picture. Secondly, close-ups of the main animals will be boring and so many postcards will do it better. Try limiting yourself for at least one day with a 50mm or a moderate telephoto such as an 80. Concentrate on landscapes and putting wildlife in perspective. Leave the close-ups to your binoculars!

  2. I'm trying out a couple of lenses and want to know what versions they are - I've tried searching the web, but I'm slightly confused.

I have 35 Elmarit-R F2.8, serial number 2855171. It doesn't have a retractable lens hood, but it does have two small metal bayonets for

attaching an external lens hood. Made in Germany.

I also have a 90 Elmarit-R F2.8, serial number 2808558. It has the telescopic lens hood. Also made in Germany.

I think both lenses are the 2nd versions, but could be wrong. Before I think about buying them, should I consider the newer versions or

    not?

Any information will be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  3. Hi,

Just wanted to get some advice on buying a second hand camera. I live in Cape Town and have found a great bargain on some old leica

lenses (a 35 and 90 elmarit) and now need to stick a body behind them. I shoot mostly black and white in film and feel comfortable with the

most basic light meter system. I need a solid camera as I travel a lot and spend time in dusty/humid places. I thought in the digital age I

could pick up a great deal on old film cameras, but I'm surprised to find the price of Rs or Sl2s is actually quite high. I'm not entirely sure

what I'm after - I have owned an R6 before but was hoping I could get a decent Sl2 or maybe an R8/R9 now. So, if anyone could suggest

where I may pick up a bargain, that would be most appreciated...

    Andre.

  4. This is my first post so I'm presuming the photo wont come up! Thought it may be of interest to see a

snap from a trip to the Kalahari with an old and very cheap Schnieder-xenar 350mm lens mounted on a

K10d. THis was handheld at 1/45 of a second. Any comments would be great. Cheers, Andre.
