Regarding the "backup camera"....to me that's a given.

Thanks for all the info....it was truly helpful.

BTW, the same evening I shot mine, a photographer in my area experienced a smash&grab, and all cameras/memory cards were taken!!! Note to self: keep everything on you or have a guard by the car!

I signed in, and was going to post nearly exactly what is said above!!!! The meeting first. Goes well, the bag-carrying follows. Goes well, the low-budget or practice session. Goes well, 2nd shooting starts....and the big thing is are they willing to invest in the essential gear? That's a qualifier that will disqualify anyone who isn't serious.

I hate when folks don't come back with the "after", so here it is.
This started out as an OMG moment, as a card that just got formatted died. I realized by the number of images on the top of the camera that something was way off, and the reality was that the card wasn't being read at all! Thus, the purchase, as advised, was two identical pro san disc cards (64 gig). The slot was backup, and I had no issues (yes to the official shooter question) writing to two Raw cards. It's truly amazing what today's technology can do!
The number at the top at the beginning said I had 1,200 images available, which seemed low. I am still processing / downloading, but I think I shot about 1,000, and my number was still 465 when I stopped. So, something's up with the calculation which can lead to panic.
All's well though! Thanks!

I appreciate your responses, so much. Thank you.
I did figure out the card just died. The 563 was the camera only recognizing the 32 gig I had in there in the backup slot. The number did not change when the card was in or out! Good thing I realized it! I got two cards, to shoot the event in Raw to both, with the 32 for emergency overflow.
I will read the above in detail and learn a lot I bet! Thanks, all.

Hi all.
I did try looking in the manual, but did not find the answer, and all my friends shoot Canon, so I can't find the answer to :
How can I change the size of my Raw files? I have a 64 gig card, and for a wedding I need two cards that will hold enough raw files for the entire thing. Right now, it shows I can only shoot 563! There has to be a way to reduce the size so I can get more out of the card! Helpppp

I didn't read everything, so forgive any repeated questions, but ... was there a 2nd photographer?
If not, I second the charge of a non-professional here. NO one goes without 1-a backup camera 2-a backup photographer and 3- backing up their images on AND off site! You ALWAYS have a 2nd photographer, just in case something happens on the way there, and in case of injury/theft/misc while you are there!
It has to be recoverable!

If you shot in RAW, you can bring some highlights back. Groups are difficult, and take a LOT of practice.
Always beware of one face being in front of another--as you can see the boy's shadow is on the Mom's face. Keep working in Photoshop, and make a list of learned-the-hard-way moments :)

I see your point, and I'd be upset. It's called ethics, or professional courtesy. There are certain things you don't do when working for someone. Next time, not only have a contract, but maybe ask someone from this forum for a recommendation of a trusted individual.

I'm assuming you've already tried stock photography websites & found nothing?

-

Do you or did you have a mentor? Maybe go back to being a 2nd shooter, and learn by helping someone you admire, maybe, who can give you specific help with the equipment you have.

First of all, you neglected to reference a specific thread or comment so we had some idea of why you said this. Second of all, everyone above me is right, and is bevaving professionally! I've not liked some comments/criticism, and later found out that the information was correct, and had to acquiese to a lack of knowledge in that area. I learned from aforementioned comments, and everyone else can do the same thing.

Very original! Nicely done.

You can check out the Cactus trigger. So far, I've only used it for one light, but through a rep you may be able to get it to do more....$40 or so.....

Love it! Being super picky, unless this was a candid, maybe move the flowers down a bit so they don't compete with her for attention. Really pretty. What effect caused the soft focus?

I can tell you what you've already been shown; 900s overheat. I heard it from other Nikon shooters, and yes, the 800 is really good. Better to have two of those probably, than the other two.

Great thread! I'll be tuning back in :)

Marc, you're hilarious! SO true. There is a lot of good advice here!

I like the idea of having it in the car. Should the need arise (i.e. emergency/no show, leaving early), you can break it out. I don't think I could get through a wedding in any capacity without taking pictures, except as the bride. When I was an amateur, I took what I wanted, and noticed the hired pro copied a few of my shots/setups. I say just lay low, don't get in the way, and maybe you'll get something cool the b & g will appreciate some time in the future. No pro can be looking in all directions at all times; it might be good to have it, just in case, but as mention, use ethical behavior and don't get in the way :)

It doesn't sound like they take commitment seriously. I wouldn't offer another engagement shoot!

-

Have you thought of being a 2nd shooter, working for someone and letting them deal with the booking headaches?

-

I like your work! The one I'd remove is the one with the bride facing the brick wall in an odd pose.

It's pretty shocking behavior. It's not professional, and really isn't acceptable, either. Perhaps this was a freebie or a favor??
