1.
Hey Chris,

Great post in my opinion. I have a friend that has done comprehensive testing of tons of 50 mm lenses across several camera and lens brands, shooting both digital and film. He shots a lens resolution chart and then moves on to real world testing. At the end of the day most 50s behave similarly (and Tessars and so forth on medium format, large format, and ultra large format.) they just have their unique signature of drawing. His test included vintage as well as contemporary lenses. He purchased most but some were loaners since some were hard to obtain in good condition (mostly Leicas and some Rolleis.) And yes there is a Leica look and Rollie look and so on with high end lenses.

Now the truth is he can afford to do this as he has both the time and money to do so since he retired at 30 to become a well healed stay at home father. He has never published any reports but shared his results with friends. He is a great ameratuer photographer and printer.

So yes some real photogs enjoy this activity and benefit from it. For those that don't so be be it. We all have our pursuits with photography.
2.
Why the rant?

You should know what you are buying or want to buy.

When I first started my involvement with m4/3s cameras, my lack of familiarity did cause me to confuse 4/3s lenses with m4/3s lenses primarily because the 4/3s gear weren't specifically labeled as m4/3s. Perhaps those selling 4/3s as m4/3 don't properly understand the difference.

 3.
FWIW,
I am currently a Canon DSLR owner with a fairly significant investment in lenses who is eagerly looking to shed all of the weight of my Canon gear.
I've handled and briefly shot the GX7 at a local demo by pros who have adopted the m4/3s system and it is a very fine camera. I've not touched the E-1 yet but I have no doubt it is a fine performer with an excellent feature set.
To begin my journey with m4/3s I purchased a Lumix GX1 with EVF as an inexpensive 'learner' camera and have been buying quality primes, adding about one a month. My latest acquisition is the Olympus 60mm f/2.8 macro and my results with it easily compete with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. The PL 25mm f/1.4 is optically a tiny jewel along with the Olympus 45 f/1.8. My point here is that there is little want for quality optics compared to the big boys. When you add to the mix that the new E-1 can handle Olympus 4/3s lens line there is little a pro couldn't choose from to meet their needs. To reap the maximum IQ from m4/3s quality optics deliver the goods though at a price. One could easily get by with a 3 zoom kit using the 7-14, 12-35, & 35-100 zooms. The weight of that kit with 2 m4/3s is probably less than my EF 70-2oo f/2.8 alone!
Having said all that there are still some holes in the Panasonic/Olympus offerings such as their TTL flash offerings when compared to Nikon or Canon. The GX7 doesn't have a PC connection and AFAIK, none of the m4/3s body have a depth of field preview button.
My plan is to purchase a GX7 first followed by a E-1 after prices drop or the used market opens up for these bodies.
I will keep my Canon system - for a while but eventually it will go. I'm not a pro by trade but have and do occasionally shoot for hire. There is little doubt in my mind that the latest m4/3s can function in a pro role. And there is one thing that goes understated about the m4/3s format and that is the aspect ratio, much less confining for me than the 2:3 ratio.

 4.
I attended a demo of the GX7 last week and it's a sweet camera and I'm sure the new OMD is going to be a great machine also. I really don't understand the constant complaining about these new cams. We've never had it better for new camera gear!

The lenses of both Pannasonic and Olympus (excuse me if I don't use the repulsive vernacular of Panny and Oly like they were names of cars) are spectacular and the camera features are awesome. For me the OMD has the features I need but I may end up buying a GX7 as well. I really like the GX7.

If you scroll down past the Jpeg samples, you can grab the RAW file samples and try them out yourselves.
http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/canon_eos_100d_review/sample_images/

Ah thank you very much.

As for the comments on Amazon, I've decided there must be user error or the like going on.

if you convert and PP intelligently

So Keith what is your method for converting? Those shots look very noise free for those ISOs. You frequently post about intelligent PP for NR and sharpening, please share your knowledge.

And as Puppy Face remarked, display cameras at Costco are usually non functioning otherwise I would slip my own card in to make test exposures.

 8.

Isn't RAW output by design lacking onboard NR, thus allowing the user to apply in PP according to taste? At defaults, 60D high ISO JPEGs have heavy NR (almost smeared looking) but the RAW is pretty much unmolested and looks terrible if you don't apply yourself.

That's my thinking as well. I've shot my 50D at ISO 1600 and been able to do great NR of RAW files in LR4 (LR3 is another story). So I'm sure that the DIGIC V generation cameras should perform much better than the 50D.

Having said that people are still complaining that the camera is flawed and images are too noisy. Wish I could get my hands on a couple of moderate ISO RAW files from the SL1 to process myself.

 9.
Is anyone shooting with the SL1? I'm interested in the camera but I've read user complaints on Amazon the SL1 RAW file noise is excessive, more so than say the 60D, 7D, Txi bodies.

I held one at Costco and was impressed with it's diminutive size and weight. Just what I need for my 70-200 f/2.8! ;)

 10.
Magic Lantern is very much worth using especially for HDRI photography and to provide other features like focus peaking. Having extended exposure bracketing is awesome for HDRI. This improves the result of HDR software as the camera has a reduced noise signature. I use ML with my 50D and it's like getting a new camera.

 11.
The Canon 100 f/2.8 macro lens is extremely sharp and quite a bargain compard to L version. I prefer using this lens when ever possible for general photography even though it's focal length is a bit long. And for macro photography it works extremely well. On an APS-C body I try to not use an aperture smaller than f/11 for maximum sharpness.

 12.
Don't upgrade to Windows 8.
Purchase Windows 7 64 bit OEM OS. Windows 8 is not a good version of Windows though it can be converted to Win 7 but why bother. Also the MS Windows hardware compatibility program should be executed to examine the hardware of the computer to be upgraded.
If you are running a 32 bit CPU scrap the system and and upgrade everything otherwise you are just wasting your money.

 13.
Canon definitely needs to reassign or remove the print button, no one uses it that I've ever heard of or read.

Ditto for the trash can button.

Those two buttons could have been used for customized functions, such as mirror lock up or back button focus or whatever an individual needs.

Canon has long sat on their hands with this issue.
