Shun,
Thanks for your response.
Following that rule of thumb, the (12,800 iso) D750 should be good to 6,400 and my OLD D70s (1600 iso) hits it's limit at
800, which is what I've found. If the D610 and D7100 both list iso up to 6400, giving them a usable range up to about
3200, are the very similar in low light ability or are there other factors at play? If they are nearly the same in iso, would
you still feel fx d610 over dx7100 is the way to go?
-
Thank you Kent.
D7100 clean at iso 2000, is that at 2.8, or with 1.4 glass?
Did I understand correctly, if I opt for the D750 I'd be good at iso 3200 with 6400 pushing the envelope, and with
the D7100 I'd be good at iso 2000 with 3200 pushing it?
I do have a 50 / 1.4, but for these venues I'd be using a 17-50 / 2.8 for the dx or a 24-70 / 2.8 for the fx.

I hope I'm not complicating things, but I find myself in a similar situation as the op, shooting in dark music venues.
Needing to upgrade, I'm deciding between a D7100, D610, and a D750. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the
differences in low light between these three bodies. I understand that the D750 would be best, but I don't know how much
better it is than the other two, especially the D7100. Budget is issue. I've been using a dx body, D70, and this upgrade is
long overdue.
Thanks,
Chris

I've been on the fence about the D90 or the D300 myself. Low light shooting is important to me, and I'v heard that the D90 was ahead by a bit in that area, but wasn't sure how the better AF of the D300 factored in. (My shots of concern are taken in dark jazz clubs with no flash. I can't swing the D700, and with the cost of quality lenses for it, it's just beyond my reach now.). So, how does the new D300s compare to the D90 in this area? Is it better, the same, or a little worse than the D90? Sorry to ask instead of answer Patrick, but it might be helpful to both of us.

Hans,
Was the 80-200 /2.8 discontinued, or is it still being made?
I don't know if I've read too much into your answer.
Thanks.

Sorry, forgot to ask, any other suggestions on a head choice for my needs?
-
Gary, Thanks for the tip about not panning - my misunderstanding.
Dumb question, but I have to ask .....Do any ball heads offers a pan only option?

P.S. --- Thank you all for your help.

Thanks for the help in my last post.
After reading the answers, and a visit to a few shops, I narrowed it down to one of two Manifrotto tripods. Please
share your thoughts on these two questions:
1. How important is it for the center post to be able to go horizontal?
2. For use with D70s & D300 (largest lens 70-200 / 2.8) & small video camera, how are Grip Ball Heads like the
Manifrotto 322RC2 which also pan?
Thanks again in advance.

I was hoping that there might be some good suggestions for a new tripod.
I would like to use it for a Nikon D70s & D300 with lens as large as 70-200 /2.8, and also for a small video camera. I
would like to keep the price below $200 USD, under $150 would be even better. I don't need it to be taller than eye
level. I guess best product for the money is what I'm looking for.
Is a detachable monopod center a good idea?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated, so thank you in advance.

Before everyone says "D700", heres the question.
I now have a D70s and am using a 17-50 f/2.8 zoom for my shooting in Jazz clubs and other live music events with
poor lighting....(No flash allowed). My 50 f/1.4 prime often wont help because I can't control my distance from the
subject.
Because many of the photos are printed at 8x10, I don't go beyond ISO 800 with the D70s.
Here are my 3 questions:
With a new body, D90, D300, D700.......
How much can I raise the ISO to get good results for an 8x10?
How much differance will it make from my current D70s?
Since cost is a factor, how much difference is their relative to my ISO concern between these 3 new cameras?
Thank you all in advance, you're answers are always a big help.

I've been reading about some of the differences between the Nikon SB-800 and the new SB-900.
My questions, if it's o.k. to ask......
Is the SB-800 compatible with all of the currently available digital bodies including those just announced?
Is the SB-900 compatible with all digital bodies from D70 forward?
What will the price difference be (MSRP or street), between the two, in USD?
When will the SB-900 be available for purchase in the US?
Thanks in advance.

In reading posts about the Nikor 50 f/1.4 vs. f/1.8, I've read about cost differences, value, and the low light ability of
the f/1.4, The answers often, seem to me, to be based on "for the money". So putting the cost aside.........
Answers to two questions would be of great help:
1) Within their common apertures which lens produces better images, sharpness, color, etc.?
2) Which lens produces better out of focus backgrounds (bokeh).
Thank you in advance. You all are always helpful!

Paul, I'm not sure what sports your shooting, or which body your using, (sorry if I missed it), but how about the Nikor 80-200 f/2.8 or the Nikor 70-200 f/2.8. These are fast lenses and depending on the body you have, a little more cropping may not be a problem.
As for a walk around / party lens, I think that you have it, unless you want faster, maybe the Nikor 17-55 f/2.8.
As for the wildlife, I have no idea what's best. Good luck with your search.

I just recieved a SB-800 for my D70s, and a friend told me to go out and get
myself a light sphere.
Can anyone with experience using them, clowd or clear, tell me what sort of
difference they make vs. the included Nikon diffuser and or bounce card.
Seems like a very small price to pay, but how are the results?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Lil, and sorry for the lack of info.
I'm using a D70's now but plan to upgrade to a D300.
-
Sorry, I forgot to add, a filter that won't diminish (a least not noticeably), the optical quality on the lens.
-
My latest mindset is to buy only quality glass and avoid the endless upgrades to
finally end up with quality glass.
My first purchase in this direction, although not very exotic, is the Nikor 50mm
f/1.4.
What filter, (52mm), can you recomend just to protest the lens, if you recommend
using a filter at all.
Thank you all again in advance.

Thank you all for your answers.
As I'm reading it here, I see that the lens I want is only being made in China now. I was hoping for "MADE IN JAPAN", but all of your feedback will save me a lot of time looking for something that doesn't exist.
Thanks again,
Chris

Based on some good advise here and a close look at my needs, I've decided to
buy a new Nikor 50mm f/1.4 lens.
My question for anyone who knows for sure is the following:
Is this lens made in only one country, or are there several countries in which they
are made. If they are made in more than one country, is one country of
manufacture better to buy than another, ie, Japan over China, etc.?
Thanks for your help in advance.

In addition to the flash purchase of my last post, I am also looking to buy a new
lens for my D70s to shoot portraits / candid photos of the kids, friends, etc.
I an thinking of the Nikon 50 /1.4 or the Nikon 85 /1.8.
Any ideas or experience would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
D7100 vs D7200 at ISO 6400

I would interested in seeing a low light comparison between the D7100, D7200, and the D750. Yes, I know that would be comparing
cropped and full frame, but I'd like to see just how close the D7200 is getting to FF in that respect.
