  1. I have a question that Im hopeing someone can answer. I have always shot jpg

but would like to start shooting RAW. I decided to mess around with it today

and set my camera on sRAW, took some shots and then tried to import them into

Lightroom however it said "The files use an unsupported color mode" and nothing

imported. I have tried looking for help on both adobe websites and through

canon but I cant figure out what im doing wrong. Im sure its somthing stupid im

    overlooking!

  2. I wouldnt worry too much about it. Especially in a small town people will know her and KNOW how she is, ( Cant be satisfied, always inhappy etc) I know it sucks to hear negative thigns but unless you actually did somthing wrong if she is unsatiable then there is nothing work stressing over. If you had captured her wedding and recoreded it on gold, she would have wanted platinum......

If you want to say somthing I might contact her after photoshopping a couple and say are you happy? is there anything I can do? And she might tell you everything is fine! In which case she just complains because she has nothing else to talk about. Or she will tell you what she was actually disspapointed with, and from that point you can see if there is a resolution or not.

  3. Lots of brides are looking right now, but in my area they look all year. I have found there are 3 types of brides, those booking for 2009 back in 2007, most looking around 6 months before their event, and then many who wait untill 2 months before hand. I dont mind when they call me, as long as im available. I have even had a bride call at 10pm the night before an eventto book, ( their photographer had emergency surgery) but I was availalbe and went. ( But in most cases I do prefer more than 12 hours notice!) Just look at the trends in your area! And most online advertising is for a year long contract so it dosnt really matter when you sign up the busy months will be covered.
  4. Those WHCC's brochers are nice. I know vista print offers them and on one of their sale days ( which is everyday) im sure you could get some really inexpensive but I would suggest desiging them yourself. Those are beautiful linda! And i know their not cheap! How do you use them? Do you give them to clients when meeting with them, take them to bridal fairs to pass out?
  5. Dave if you are unsure I would ask to meet with the couple at the church or even just take some sample shots on your own. If no flash is allow then I would explain to them the results they can expect. Im sure if they are strict on flash you wont be permitted to stand on the other side of the bride and groom ( behind the alter) to shoot the ceremony by natural light from the windows. I would just experament and discuess the options and be honest with them with what they can expect from their photos. That way there will be no surprises or dissapointments!

The side light could be a disaster or STUNNING beautiful and dramatic. Maybe you have found your niche, since others dont want to "deal" with the location, if you get some great shots ( better than the blurryness on the website) maybe offer better photos for them to use on their website, inexchange for event referals! Best of luck! Post the sample shots you take if you get the job!

  6. I use Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge and I wouldnt give up any. You can do all the same things that you do in lightroom in photoshop but with lightroom you can do it a few DAYS faster. Everything goes through lighroom first for minor color adjustments etc and is then exported. From there certain photos are selected for photoshop. Lightroom is basically like a darkroom(hence the name?) but photoshop alows you to become alot more artistic and heavely manipulate and image. I would say if your going to be editing 1 photo just go with photoshop but if you plan on shooting weddings I would suggest lightroom for quick processing. I mean do you really want to open, edit, save, and close 1200 images? With lightroom I spend no more than 10-30 sec if not less on each photo. No opening, saving close etc. Just import once, edit, export once and im done!
  7. I dunno, driving to their home pre shoot seems excessive for a 1-2 hour shoot unless your planning of setting up something really elaborate. There seems to be a strange gap in the number of photos you offer with the $100 to $300 jump. And you are goign to get people who will order 2 $100 packages to get 160 photos and to bypass paying $300 for it. ( If you allow them to) and you need to raise you prices on the prints because with what your offering you will get two type of clients. Those who by the CD, and they wont order anything from you because they will print them out themselves, and then those who order prints, becasue they dont want to/cant pay for the CD In which case if they order an 8x10 and you print from whitehouse you will then charge them $2.73? But they wont order more than $100 becuase then they would just buy the CD.

I would not offer the differnt number of photos on each CD I would set up the Packages price with it inlcuded such as 1 hour package A without CD is $200 (for example) and 1 hour package B with CD is $400 (for example) but adjust the prices to what fits you.

Like I said before I dunno. If it works for you it works but try it and you will see and then make any nessesary adjustments!

  8. Ha Ha here is advice from a woman. Buy the gear. Its a concrete act that she can get over ( provided your not losing your home and selling off your firstborn to pay for it) If you were to hide it and get caught that is more abstract and could potentiontially come back at any time to haunt you. Here is an example... you are friendly with the waitress at a restaraunt. Well you cant be accused of buying camera gear from her... however you were caught lying in the past and secretly ordered secret things, so who is to say you dont secretly like her more than your partner, or you want to go back there NEXT time to see her, or were possibly ordering HER things secretly online... lol ok well a bit extreme but lying and trust apply to all aspects of your relationship, buying camera gear is kinda a minor thing. She wont leave you over gear ( and if she does good riddence) but trust issues can be a breaking factor... just order the gear hide the reciepts downplay the cost and by her somthing nice... my .02 :)
  9. ha ha marc, I have to second EVERYTHING you just said substitute yorkie for chihuahua and leave off the wife part... ( I would fill in with husband) but lovley doesnt really describe him... oh well here's to a great 2008!

    (2008??!?? agh quarter life crises)

  10. Hmm I think a good name is a neutral thing it wont make or break you, but a bad name can hurt you! I dont think you can go wrong with your name. I use my initials " photography by my initials" just because my last name is hard to prounounce. If it were somehow related or could tie in I would try and get clever... Like if your name were richard Moments or somthing like that I would go with " Moments photography" So as Ed said stay away from Anthrax Photography of Satan all together, and unless your a "Rick's Precious Moments" type of guy I would stick with your name and somthing solid!People wont be put off by your name, its not Seymore Butts Photography or anything. In any case go with what represents you and your company the best because in the end that is what you are selling.
  11. I love it.Gowing up as a kid using film ( which is an expensive commodity at age 10) I always had to worry about "wasted" shots. If I only had 24 exposures and chances were a few on the front and end might get lost I had to really think hard about if I actually wanted the shot. And even then I would have to go with the "safe" shot, no expiramenting or a roll could go too fast. Now I can take 24 shots of the same thing trying differnt lighting or exposures or anything I want. No More "wasted" shots that I paid for film for, paid to develop and was disapointed with or wish I would have experiramented more with etc. Now that im a big girl(13 years later) i do things my way! thank you digital!
  12. Hmmmm my opinion is that is your going to do something contraversial at least take the time to do it well. If your trying to make a point that people could be offended by then you need a flawless executuion otherwise people will fail to take you and your message seriously.
  13. I went to art school, and the first thing that you have to learn is that everything is subjective. I wouldnt worry too much about what teachers says, especially if they are grad students teaching and freshman class, they tend to think of themselves as art gods ( just my own personal experiance) You may not have drawing talent but if you apply yourself you can learn the skills which are just as useful and many principles are applicable across the creative feilds. But get used to it, there is not right or wrong answer or square root or 12 that will get you through art school you are going to have to spend the next 4 years defending what you do and design and why it is succesful.

You teacher comments may also have nothing to do with you drawing skills or lack thereof it may be a comment on you mental additude and willingness to attack a challenge which will hinder your growth in photography as well.

Here is my advice, dont be bad at drawing anymore, just be good at it :)

And the basic excercises they make you do help. Sit down, draw your hand in one line. No Erasing, infact do it in pen. Eventually you will get better and when you get board of your hand draw your shoe.. in one line also

Whether you ever use it again or not you will gain something out of your drawing class that may or may not affect your photography, but just have an open mind, do your best and enjoy. And you never know where you will end up after you graduate. I spent four years studing interior design, but im sure glad now that I paid attention in my photography and photoshop classes.
