I give low-quality dig negs for email, small-size printing (4x6 or less). I'm just getting started and will let you know how it works out. Frankly I'm in this to make money, not maintain 100% artistic integrity. If people need to view the quality of my work, they can do so online or with the larger prints I provide.
I understand the desire to always produce the highest quality print. Often friends and family say, "Just email me a high-res--I want a picture." Instead, I offer to make a print myself (even though it costs me). Now, however, I have to worry about profit. I can print small photos for clients, but offer the opportunity for them to do it themselves for cheaper. It's all about making money and competing against everyone else. When you're Annie Liebovitz you can afford to maintain artistic integrity.
On the other hand, maybe I'm wrong and you have "it" and can afford to control every single one of your prints. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, those are really helpful suggestions.

Do you have any examples of portraits with people and their dog? I'm shooting a family (Mom, dad, 7-year old
daughter) with their bassett hound soon, and would like some brainstorming on posing ideas. We'll be outside,

No, it doesn't bother me. I DO have a nice camera, and am proud of it. The fact that they like my pictures justifies me buying it! Not everyone can justify buying a DSLR

Good point Bunlui! AF is noticeably slower at f5.6
-
I"ll give up f2.8 or better when ISO 800 looks just like ISO 100 (NO COMPROMISE)...of course, even when that happens you can still get faster shots with ISO 800 at f2.8 than at f5.6
And who doesn't love a sweet bokeh?

Thanks for the good info. I'll incorporate that into my rate.
-
Do you charge for time and prints (or dig. files) in event photography, or do you charge only one flat rate? I have in
mind various ceremonies, corporate events, etc.

Thanks a lot. I hadn't heard of most of those titles--I'll check them out.

What are your favorite photo magazines that deal with more than the basics? When I first started photography,
nearly every magazine I read taught me a great deal. Now, I don't think I can stand to read another article on using a
tripod or the rule of thirds. Now, before anyone says it, I'll say it: no, I don't consider myself a great photographer, but
I do consider myself an informed one (and I know how to use a tripod). Where can I turn to increase this knowledge
further?

I think it's great! Also, PN has a beta version of a website available to subscribers.

Criticism with suggestions.
Example: Your lighting is harsh. Next time, consider waiting for the "magic hour."

Lex, I like your suggestions. I live in Coronado, and find myself shooting the same themes repeatedly. Think I might check out the local graffiti over the bridge.

You'd get the lens right away, but any business fails without good customer service.
-
Your camera's only as good as it's lenses, so invest in those if you have to chose. That said, the recent DP inovations are to great to ignore.

Thanks, Peter. I'm going to reference your advice the next time I process an image.

Ok, so I guess I'm doing things right. Thanks, gentlemen.

Thank you for your response. I guess the length of time I spend repairing, could have to do with my PS skills. How
would you describe proper use of ETTR?
-
When "exposing to the right," do you find a loss of contrast in the highlights (ie sky for landscapes). I understand the
exposure works, but I seem to spend a lot of post-production time repairing the contrast (and unable to finish it
completely in some cases).

For what it's worth, I think the system here works; just take everything with a "grain of salt." Barring some epiphany, PN's photo critique/rating system won't get much better because it's really not that bad.
