I have both of these and they complement each other. The 18-55 DX is *far* more versatile, the 50mm is great in low light and if you want to shoot artistic pictures with out of focus background.
I use the 18-55 DX perhaps 5 times more often than the 50mm so if I had to choose between these two I'd definitely get the 18-55 DX.
Both are excellent optically. The 18-55 is famous for excellent performance despite of being inexpensive and mostly made of plastic (read the review at kenrockwell.com). You can get used ones at low price because thousands have been sold as a kit lens.
