1.
Help! When working on transferring files around I sometimes work in Windows Explorer and like to view photos there as icons (small previews) to know what pictures are where. I also have Lightroom 4 (v 4.1) where I work on my photos. I recently had to purchase a new laptop (when the old one was stolen), and on the new laptop I cannot open RAW files unless I view them by opening Lightroom (I get a message saying "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer". My new laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate. I did not have this problem on my old laptop which was also running Windows 7 Ultimate. How can I open these photos without having to go into Lightroom?

  2.
I recently purchased the Canon Extender EP-EX Mark II for my new 5D Mark III, but had to return it since it didn't fit. I contacted B&H about this and was told that so far there is not yet an extender that will fit the Mark III, so I returned the Canon Extender EP-EX Mark II. I talked with Canon today and they indicated that the Canon Extender EP-EX Mark II should fit the 5D Mark III. I'm confused. What should I do?

  3.
Does anybody know where I can buy some extra LP-E6 batteries and am extra :C-E6 battery charger for my new 5D Mark II? I just have the one battery that came with the camera and I'm leaving in 1 week for Belize and need extra batteries. All the sites I look at say they are back ordered, as do my local stores.

  4. I posted this in the tripod forum, but not much response, so I thought I'd

check here. I have just noticed there is what looks to be a new tripod, Gitzo

traveler GT1541T, which is replacing the 1540. It looks to have a much greater

load capacity than the 1540 and still be quite compact. Does anyone know

    anything more about this?

  6. Bob, thank you for the link. Am I missing something? I am looking for people's opinions and experience with the 1540T and 1550T, and I don't see anything much in the Tripod forum link. When I have searched photo.net, I also haven't found too much, which is why I posted the question. If I'm not finding something in your link, please let me know.
  7. I am looking at the Gitzo 1540T and 1550T. I need light and compact for an

upcoming trip, and will be shooting with a Canon 40D and 5D with my heaviest

lens being the Canon 100-400mm. The 1550T has 5 sections vs the 4 on the 1540,

and the 1550T comes with a Gitzo ball head. I am thinking the 1540 with

perhaps improved stability of 4 vs 5 sections and purchase a ballhead

separately. Any thoughts on the tripods and appropriate ballheads much

    appreciated.

  8. I will be going to the Galapagos Islands at the end of May and am interested in

trying the Cokin system for shooting some landscape and sunset shots, mostly

with a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II. I have read here how a number of people just

hand hold cokin filters rather than use the Cokin filter holder, but I

interested in recommendations about both which filter holder would be best to

use (they list several on their web site, and it looks like the X-Pro is

recommended for 15mm and up lenses, but I read that people seem to be using the

P system). I am also interested in which Cokin filters would be good to use (I

    imagine some GND filters).

  9. I was looking at B&H for a UV/protective filter for my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L

II, and I found that Heliopan has both a "Heliopan 82 mm UV (Haze) SH-PMC

(Super Multi-Coated) Glass Filter", and also a much more expensive "Heliopan

82mm Digital Glass Filter". I e-mailed B&H about the difference and got an

answer that "the Digital filter will do the same job of the UV filter some

manufactureres are taking the word digital to create a more expensive market".

What do any of you know about these Digital Glass Filters as opposed to other

types of filters? Any real advantage, or just marketing?

  10. WE just returned from a month in Kenya and Tanzania. I also definitely vote for the 100-400. Even though you will lose autofocus at 400 with your body, you might want to consider a 1.4x II Extender if you have nothing longer. In Africa it seemed there was always one of two situations: I wanted to have lots of telescopic power (I actually did a lot of shooting with the 500mm IS with the 1.4x and still had autofocus on both a 20D and a 5D)to bring animals in close; or I wanted to be able to get something relatively close in to the shot (the 24-105mm L). Used by bean bag A LOT. Only used my tripod once. Another lens I didn't bring but wished I had was the 70-300 DO. This is a good range with some telephoto power and is very small and light compared with the 100-400. One last thing: definitely bring at least 2 bodies and when on a drive try to avoid switching lenses any more than you have to, i.e I had the 500mm on one body and the 100-400 on another, but even then sometimes I had to switch to the 24-105 for closer pictures. Two bodies means if one fails, you can still shoot. At one point my 5D gave an error 99, and I just switched to the 20D and kept shooting.
  11. Yes, it is the 500mm f4 IS USM lens. The autofocus makes a brief whirring sound (maybe half a second) when working, and the IS system makes a similar whirring sound that lasts maybe 2-3 seconds when working. Apart from the sound, everything seems to work just fine. The noise from these functions just seems more prominent than when these functions engage in other IS USM lenses I have (perhaps simply from the larger barrel of the 500mm causing the sound to resonate more?) I will use the 500mm for nature photography and am wondering if this noise will be a problem with animals noticing it when in use. I guess I'll get a thorough field test when I take it to Africa in August.

I would be interested in the recommendations from John for where to have the lens checked out. I do live in Washington state in the Seattle area. The main camera shop here seems to be Glazer's.

Thanks again to all for the advice and help.

  12. There is noticeable noise as my new Canon 500mm lens autofocuses. I looked at

what postings I could find here, and there is some mention of people being

annoyed with the noise, and I'm just wondering how to know if my lens' noise is

    the normal amount.

  13. Wow! Thank you all for your information and suggestions (love the Sigma on the plane picture). Sounds like I'll go with the Canon 500 mm f/4.0 IS. I will have my tripod to use when possible, but do plan on having stablization bags and such for shooting from the vehicle. Has anyone had experience with the Kirk Windomount or Omnipod for this purpose, or any other suggestions?

I'll be traveling through Heathrow in London to Kenya and Tanzania for this trip, so I understand I'll need to plan on just one carryon on British Air (tickets all ready bought, next time I'll go through Amsterdam on KLM to avoid the carryon limitation). I was going to pick up a Lowepro PhotoTrekker AW II, but what I've seen on the new Lowepro Vertex 300 AW looks nice. It seems about the same size as the PhotoTrekker but with a laptop compartment as well and lots of nice pockets. Anyone seen one of these up close yet?

  14. Hello! I?m new to all this and could use some advice about Canon?s 500 mm lens.

I?ve been shooting a 20D for 2 years now and have gradually accumulated some

    lenses including a 10-22 EFS, 100-400L, 24-105L, 7-300 DO. I also have the 1.4

and 2.0 TC, but, of course, lose autofocus using these with my 100-400. I?m

fortunate to be able to afford nice equipment, and my plan has been to go to

Africa this August for a month to shoot wildlife. I?m thinking I should

upgrade to the new 1D Mark III, and I?m trying to decide if I should take the

plunge and get the Canon 500mm. From what I understand, I could then even use

the 1.4 TC if needed and maintain autofocus on the 500.The only thing holding

me back is I wouldn?t want to invest that kind of money in a lens and then have

an updated/better lens (i.e. faster with a wider aperture) come out 6 months

later. I have also so far stuck with Canon Lenses, but I seem to remember

seeing somewhere recently that one of the other companies (?sigma) has a new

100-500mm f2.8 zoom that might be a good choice. Thoughts?
