1.
Thanks for all the responses. The event is close by & I do mostly children. So it would definitely be my prospective clients at this event. I don't have the equipment to offer them a small print at the event. I was thinking along the same lines as Will. I will probably offer them a low res image to download that has a watermark with the option to purchase additional prints. They will need to visit my website in order to download the image. I am worried that I will be seen as someone who works for free.

  2.
So I had a heads up about an upcoming project at a children's museum that I thought would be paid. Was told by an employee of the museum that it would be similar to doing a prom or father/daughter dance. This is the e-mail I just received from the guys boss:

"... shared your contact information with me and may have mentioned that I would be contacting you. Here at the Children's Museum of in _____ we are in the process of planning our first-ever Family Valentine's Dance. We would be thrilled if you would consider participating by taking digital photos of families that can be emailed to them as part of the event.

In addition to having a great time at this event, you would also receive great promotion for your business through our website, newsletter, a press release, and our social media presence, reaching thousands of households throughout the seacoast and beyond. You would also be welcome to hand out flyers or other information to participants during the dance.

Here is our tentative event description (including you!) if you are interested and available:

Little Love Bugs Dance
Friday, February 10, 6 8:30 pm
Join us for an evening of family fun, music and treats as we share the love
this Valentine¹s Day. Dress up and dance with your sweethearts under the
disco ball as we spin the dance tunes and learn to ³dance like a star² with
a ballroom dance demonstration and short lesson from the professionals at
Portsmouth Ballroom. The fun continues as our friends from Pixie Studios
take and email you a keepsake photo in a giant heart frame, you make
fragrant tissue corsages and boutonnieres for your loved ones to wear, and
enjoy tasty treats as you decorate your own cookies at the sugar cookie
buffet, nibble on fresh fruit from Fiddlehead Farms and sip bubbly fruit
punch. The dance will end with a visit to our ³Kissing Booth² where we¹ll
be saying goodnight with Hershey Kisses and a Valentine party favor.

Please let me know if you have any questions and whether or not you are able to be part of this great event."

So clearly they don't expect to pay me for this. They seem to think I'm going to be thrilled with the exposure (which I am to a point), but exposure doesn't pay the bills. Or does it? Will this really help? Has anyone had good return on this kind of volunteer job?
I have experience with this sort of work & could probably mill them through quickly. I wouldn't do any post processing except cropping, but, at the very least, would need to bring an assistant to cover paperwork. I would probably give them a password & set up an on-line gallery with downloadable low res images instead of e-mailing & I definitely would tell them to take out the part about the frame (apparantly they are going to have a giant heart set up & it wouldn't really be a frame, but part of the background).
Should I take this job?

  3.
I thought they had resolved the issue, but it seems they are back at it. I have not seen my May check either. I've been getting the run-a-round again. I got my checks the last time as soon as I threatened informing the BBB. I don't think they are getting a warning this time.

The only reason I'm still with them is because they are the only place I can find that you can sell packages.

  4.
I've seen several photographers offering a "Senior Magazine" as an add on to portrait packages. I love it and would like to offer it. Does anyone know where to get these printed?
Here's a sample of what I'm talking about:
http://www.digitalartsphotography.com/magazines/seniorpicturemagazine/index.html
Thanks

  5.
I am really sad about this too, but, since 2/3 of my income comes from my printroom sales, I have no choice but to s or get off the pot.

I sent out an e-mail to my account rep yesterday (knowing he would pass it on) quoting their new policy & stating how they were not fulfilling their end of the bargain. I also mentioned a possible complaint with the better business bureau if action was not taken by Monday. We'll see what comes of it between now & Monday.

In the meantime I think I am switching to Zenfolio. The only drawback I can see is that they don't offer portrait packages which I use quite a lot.

  6.
When I first signed up with Printroom.com about 3 years ago they were great. Wonderful customer service, easy to use, fast turn around time and a check in the mail once a month.

For the past 6 months or so it seems like they are having trouble with order fulfillment. The 2-3 day print time is turning into 7-10 on a lot of my orders. It was especially bad during oct. & nov. Busy season, I know, but it was never a problem before. Of course I feel like I'm getting the run-a-round when I ask why this is happening. I just chaulked it up to growing pains & I figured it would work itself out.

In addition I was getting really wierd crops on prints. I had to return an entire box of 8x10's that were cropped too close to the top of the head. They told me to resubmit images cropped the way I wanted them & they would reprint them. Huh? That's new. Especially since I could see quite clearly on the thumbnails of my original order that they were already the way I wanted them. New guy I guess.

That's another thing. I've had so many account reps in the last three years that I no longer can count them on one hand. What's going on there that there is such a high turn around rate? Granted a couple of them did get promotions, but the majority of the changes I didn't even find out about until I tried to e-mail someone & got a response from a different person.

Then a few months ago the commission checks started arriving late. They are issued on the 15th of the following month & I usually received it 5-7 days later since I am on the east coast. In September my check took about 10 days to get to me. No problem. It happens. The mail system is finicky. Late again in October. In November my check took about 2 1/2 weeks to get to me. Thanksgiving probably heald it up right? Late again in December. Christmas? Keep in mind the checks were always on time in the two years prior. Now, as of 2-17-1010, I still have not received my January check. I have sent numerous e-mails & the only response I've gotten was a form letter

"Due to the overwhelming questions on profit checks I am sending out this e-mail in hopes that it answers your questions: Due to changes to Printroom’s Accounting Policies and Procedures mandated by the Company’s auditors, we have been behind schedule in issuing profit checks. You undoubtedly realize this. For this we sincerely apologize. Please know that we are making every effort to remedy this problem, but understand your angst and disappointment. You are a valued partner and we hope to get this process worked out as soon as possible, so that we can continue to provide wonderful photo products to customers throughout the world.

Accounting & Finance

Printroom, Inc"

When I sent a reply saying this was unacceptable I got the same exact e-mail again.

I can't be the only one who this is happening to, but I'm unable to find any other posts about printroom to compare my experiences with. So now I have three questions if you are still with me after this long rant.
1. Anyone else having problems with Printroom.com?
2. Should I stay or should I go?
3. Can anyone suggest another company similar to printroom.com that I can look into?
7. I'm going to be doing a H&S and a 3/4 on all of the kids I shoot. Also, I currently shoot about 20 or more an hour in daycares and preschools (not counting 2-year-olds and sibs) so changing backdrops for each one would really slow me down. The schools just want you in and out before all the naps and lunch start. The company that I currently work for has a background container that holds 4 canvas backdrops on spring loaded dowels that roll up like window blinds. Even ages ago when I worked for PCA in the walmart stores I had this kind of system. So I know it's out there I just can't find it. Is it out of date? Am I the only person who still wants to use actual backdrops in the schools?
  8. I'm about to embark into the wonderful world of school portraits (I've been

doing it for someone else for a loooong time). Problem is I can't find a

decent system for taking multiple canvas backdrops to a school. I don't want

to put backdrops in digitally. I just don't have enough know how in PS for

    that.
