  1. I believe that the bluish cast to the water is the result of the waterfall being in deep shadow during a VERY bright and clear morning (taken at about 9am with the sun hitting the slope on the left side of the image).

The lens only had a UV filter on it, but the image seems like it would benifit from a bit less exposure (as Scott suggested) and a warming filter (81a)...

  2. The strong shadow leads me to believe that the flash was fired from the exact same place both times. Is that correct?

No, the orange gelled pop was fired from about 45° to the right of camera, and the green one was fired about 60° to the left (I think that is my hand or the flash in the frame in about the 2:30 position on the right).

Also, I didn't know that the 7,5 mm FE was full frame. Anyway, the image is cropped in an odd, not entirely circular way. It seems that some deliberate vignetting was done here (the edges would be sharper if it was done in Photoshop). I'd like to know more about this technique, if possible.

The crop at the top is a result of the place I had it scanned, they must have had it slightly off center when they scanned... (the image is presented directly off the PhotoCD in jpg format, no modification of any kind). However, after looking at a few other images from that same roll, it does look like there is a little bit of the top and the bottom of the circular image missing! As pointed out below, I used the wrong term earlier, and the 7.5mm lens is indeed a circular fisheye, and not a full-frame one as I mentioned (thanks for straightening me out!).

The blury clouds are a result of the 1-minute exposure, and everything else is lit from ambient light. I set the SB-28 flash to f/8 at about 8 feet and held the gels over it without worrying about metering it (the orange gel loses 2 stops, the green about 1). The best site I have found that describes this technique (painting with flash pops) is Lost America by Troy Paiva.

She sat amazingly still! (I'm not sure how, she just froze).

There are more from that area (including a few more circular fisheye photos) on one of my exhibits pages:

  3. Do you like this photo that I took with daylight film and an 80Afilter, or do you likethe http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=549656">unfilteredversion better?

I like the color-corrected streaks in this photo better, but thegreenish/yellow of the other version has a certain appeal.

    Comments/Opinions?

  4. Thanks for the comments so far.

I agree with the previous person about the symmetry of the shot kinda being annoying. When I lined up the photo, I had intended to be just off center to the left, but I missed pre-focussed my mark in the dark...

Taking R. Jaafar's advice below, I tried cropping it a bit, and I find that breaking the balance of the shot makes it more appealing.
