Hi Guys,
The shots I've processed in DPP do not show the changes when I open them via
lightroom. I have saved the changes in DPP but havent exported the files (
they're still in RAW format). Any solutions? My idea is to further process them
before exporting as jpeg.

ok..here's someone who's upgraded in the last 3 weeks..
Tamron - great lens. Has given me wonderful shots. no complaints.
Bought a 40D, continued to use the tamron. wasn't happy with my lowlight pics, bought the 17-55. Huge improvements in colour, focusing time, range and overall quality. No more annoying creaky focusing noise! Worth the money. I still have the tamron and its going to stay on my spare 350D. But the 17-55 is worth every penny
Good luck

Rob Berhard & Jim Stutz gets two free batteries (sponsored by StarlingTek.com of course) for the funniest answers

Recently went thru a similar debate myself (24-70 Vs. 17 - 55) Eventually went for the 17-55.Boy! what a lens! (and ps: i upgraded from the tamron 17-50 of which i've never had a complaint about!)

So here's the story so far guys..
I went down to Wolf camera the other day. They didnt have it in stock but could get it for me in 3 days. Bad news was that tax brought the total price to over $1400. Checked things out and yes you guys are right, you dont have to pay tax if the supplier doesnt have a biz presence in CA. Most online stores were selling it for $1299. So went onto amazon and got it from Ritz's store on the site. Will check out the stores you guys recommended over the weekend(going to fry's tomo vivek..cheers). Dan, no I dont work for Apple! otherwise I would've been asking about stores which stock the 1dmkIII :) Cheers Guys for all the help and hope the online info comes in handy for future purchases.
-
Great stuff guys. What a great place for fast responses :) Looks like buying online doesnt really make a difference as I'll probably have to fish out the extra $100. In the grand scheme of things, I'm still saving a lot of money ( euro conversion etc: I'm based in ireland)
I certainly will check out these stores, online first) And yes, will definitely wave Dan if I pass your place :) I'm just there for a conf and a bit of training. Thanks again folks..much appreciated

Guys,
Hope this is the right place to ask and someone here will be able to point me
in the right direction... I'll be in Cupertino for a couple of weeks from next.
I want to pick up a 40D while I'm there. I've thought about ordering one from
amazon to be delivered to the hotel..The preference is to go down to a shop,
either local or in the SF area and pick one up. I hear there are Sales tax
issues in CA which will drive the prices up? I might be travelling to
Springfield, OR while I'm there are well. What do you think I should do? Are
there any decent shops which might stock them around these areas? Any help
would be much appreciated.
Cheers, George

Do you have the money? Get the IS version
It will come in handy on more occasions than you can think of!

if you use the latest version of canons digital photo proifessional, you can batch edit them by selecting all images and changing wb using the tool option
-
how about the 100mm (rated better than the 60mm in all reviews i've read) and a cheaper alternative for the MR-14EX?
-
This is such an interesting post. Cheers for posting this sutejo..I've been wondering about the same options for my new 40D :) (not yet) I think 24-70 covers quite a lot of area although its a personal thing as everyone said here...
Bob- read your suggestion and i was like - 'are you taking the piss'? Obviously not - looks like a great camera. Yes and it surely will have its advantages at parties. Big huge camera with all the props can scare people at times . Forking 700 quid for another camera? Oh not sure - I suppose this comes down to personal choice as well at the end of the day..
-
I have the tamron lens. no doubt it is the best out of the first two. (dont know about the third, coz f2.8 was a criteria for me when i bought mine)
However, the lack of zoom bothers me..and it does bother me quite a lot. The reverse focus ring bothers me as well..All my other lenses are canon and although you're used to this lens, it is annoying.
Quality of shots - second to none!
Given a choice - canon 24-70 2.8 L. Coz i can live without the 17-23 end of it.
So, if you can live with the 50 mm limit and reverse focusing, go for it, because the tamron is the superior lens!
-
I'd take them both. You'd need the 50mm or even wider lens to capture the whole set and the 70-200 for convenient close shots. depends what you're trying to do i suppose. if you're covering the event, a wide shot has to be included?

If you are concerned about write speeds: I bought 5 CF cards last month, based on rob galbraith's brilliant review. Two Sandisk extreme III 2gb's and 3 Ritek/Ridata 80X/PRO II 2gb's. The write speed didnt seem considerably different to me on paper so thats why i went for the ritek ones.
I do a lot of sports photography and the sandisk ones write two more shots than the ridata ones before the buffer hits! I take raw and i think it was 12 vs 14 when i tested it out.
Having said that I use the ritek ones for everyday shooting. When it comes to fast shooting it's sandisks which takes its place.
Thats just in terms of speed. I also bought a cheap 2 gb card from a company called mymemory here in the UK. Pictures become corrupt, card stalls and I've had all sorts of problems with that brand.
Yes been hit with dodgy sandisks on ebay too. When you buy, use trustworthy sources like amazon or something similar.
Good luck

how about a used tamron 17-50 2.8? you might be able to pick one up on the
auction sites for around $200?
-
works perfectly fine. doesnt feel right (body weight to lens wt ration et al) but works just fine. Hasnt given me any problems so far. So go for it...
I bought a real strap (5D style one) to make the carrying process better..

I'm a Tamron 17-50 user and bought it based on Bobs review and good feedback from photo.net users. Quite happy with it..Sometimes I feel that the 50mm end isnt adequate enough a zoom and I'm hoping to upgrade to the 24-70 canon lens and skip the 17-55 2.8 as I had originally planned. Now, I've only used the 24-70 in my dreams but i haven't heard anything bad about lens. Maybe worth consideration...
-
I asked the same question here a few months back and the opinions were weighted overwhelmingly towards the tamron.I got it..and have had no regrets. (even though the macro function on the sigma was tempting).
In my humble opinion, it will be an insult to compare an L lens to this. I've used the 70-200 2.8 IS L and god, thats a Ferrari while this is an alfa romeo. The Tamron is quite heavy btw and i find the max zoom inadequate for my needs at times..The 24-70 will be my next upgrade..till then I'm quite happy with the tamron..

If this is a genuine question by any chance, here's the camera you need to get

Guys,
Cheers to all of you who posted replies to my question. William, you are right..I have realised that it is not all about the lens...and I'm not going to starve for a month and buy a 50/1.2 lens. However, knowing how much the 1.8 lens makes low light photos possible in the first place, I will definitely consider a slightly better lens once I have improved my skills with what I have.
Yes I agree that there is a lot to be learnt..How I go about learning that is another long question..I have a great interest in photography but am limited in the time I can spend and the resources I have available ( such as photography classes where I live). The pictures I posted above are of friends at a casual dinner one evening..Most of them are quick, spur of the moment shots..Metering or anything else out of the ordinary will transform me from being ' the guy who takes nice shots' to 'that annoying guy with the camera'. However I do take all the answers on board..I've already started using the suggestions given..breathing, multiple shots, underexposing and using a bit of PP...Hey its a learning process and as Keith said...you dont learn unless you practice..Got what I wanted in this picture from yesterday..All i wanted was the girl in the middle..Not perfect..dont really care about others being OOF, I got what I wanted..And I've ordered those books as well, you'd never know where inspiration will come from :). A lot learnt lots more to learn...

Thanks again.Purpose achieved...

Keith,
You so saw what I was trying to do. And yes, you're so right - Whats good is what looks good to YOU. Thanks for the tips and most importantly, thank you for helping me bring my confidence levels back up.
George
ps: that picture above says it all

First of all let me say a big thank you for all your responses...
Mark, Thanks you for the link to that excellent site and the book suggestions. Taken on board fully.
Thomas S, great tips..especially the handling and anticipatory ones! These are things you wont find in a textbook.
Paulo, unfortunately these are shot at my max ISO.
As they say, if you cant listen, you cant learn. And I'm here to listen and thanks again for all your input
