  1. I used to use Vivitar 285's for years and when I got my first D70 they would not work hardly at all with the D70. The exposures were all over the place. So, I got the SB800. I now have three of them and two D70s cameras. My flash exposures are still all over the place but now I know where my EV adjustment setting is on the flash, so I struggle onward.

If I were you, I would call Nikon about your flash and write down their recommendations. Then, your flash exposures will be all over the place too.

It is my serious conclusion that these cameras are not consistent with the Nikon flash units in spite of all the advertising to the contrary.

    PRINT IT.

  2. I have a 35-105mm F3.5-4.5 push-pull Nikon zoom that I purchased used. I had it tightened up at Chicago Camera in Chicago. My repair guy, Bill put new seals in it as well. I don't remember my previous version of that lens extending while pointed down but I really noticed it on this one and it annoyed me. I like push-pull, ordinarily.
  3. I use the 20mm F2.8AF when I need a wide for weddings, especially on digital. My preference for quality in a wide is the 35mm F2AF. All of the Nikon primes wider than 35mm seem to have problems.

I once owned the 24-85mm F2.8-F4. It focused fast enough and was a decent lens.

I had the opportunity to just test the 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 version. The lens jerked into focus. I was not used to that. It flared hooribly at 24mm. Needless to sy, it was useless to me.

My favorite at the moment, being a prime lens guy, is the 35-105 F3.5-4.5 AFD. It is push-pull and I like that. I once read where it was compared to the 28-70 and the 28-70mm lens proved even better.

All of this can be subjective and we sometimes enjoy a lens or we just sell it and move on.
