effects module of ShowIT. can this program be used as a standalone? thanks.

can someone explain how they effectively use the 'flagging' in lightroom to
sort their images? are you using it to mark images that are keepers and images
that are trash?? wouldn't it be easier to just delete the trash images instead
of marking them? does flagging sort into groups?
thanks.

can anyone define and explain flash sync speed in laymen's terms. it seems to
me one of the more complicated topics. mainly: why can't my d80 use a faster
shutter speed than 1/200 when my flash is active? the flash bursts lasts only
like 1/10,000 of a sec. , so why can't my shutter fire faster than 1/200?
especially outside in the sun, i'd like to use my 2.8 aperture for the shallow
dof, but can't because the shutter can't go faster than 1/200 and everything
would be blown.
can anyone shed some light about the basics of the flash sync so a 'dummy' can
grasp it???

Jeff,

how many here use Manual focus all day vs. Auto focus all day? benefits for
each?
and how if any way does this affect depth of field in regards to your focus
point in the frame? if for example you're shooting 2.8 for a nice blurred
background and you've got two people walking by you, obviously the person
closest to you is closer to the camera and the other person is further away
from the camera. however, you want both in focus. if you focus only on the
furthest one the closest subject is out of focus due to the 2.8. and vice
versa if you focus on the closest subject. how do you get both people in focus
that are on a slightly different plane and keep the 2.8 for the nice
background??

is it worth the extra $30 to buy the uv/haze filter for my 17-55mm 2.8 G lens

images?? recommendations?? this is for wedding photography.

assumption:
ceremony and reception at same location.
you shoot the bride at her home and head to location an hour before the
ceremony starts.
ok,
how many here barge right into the reception hall to get some images of the
room and all the little details?
or do you find someone in there, tell them who you are, introduce yourself,
ASK PERMISSION and then start shooting?
what is etiquette here?
thanks.

this might be a long one..
i'm aware that many people starting in the business set their initial prices
low and raise them gradually every year or six months or whatever. however my
question from a marketing standpoint is that would it possibly be better to
just initially set your prices at the level of your demographic and business
plan. for example if you're ultimately targeting the 2000-2500$ price range,
instead of breaking into the game at $1200-1400, should you just set them at
$2000-2500 and go from there?? Why waste time starting low and gradually
raising when you can establish yourself and start in your desired range? make
sense to anyone else or is the stagger step method preferred?
i think that even though how much experience people have they for some reason
think that just because they are a new business they have to start low.
thoughts??

does adobe lightroom take the place of a program like photomechanic and offer
an ease of quick browsing and deleting of images? also can it be used to open
raw files, edit them, convert to jpg and print.??

anyone have or use a dvd writer with lightscribe technology to print right on
the disc? if not how do you label your dvds?

how does everybody go about filing state sales tax? do you need a state tax id
#? and then just mail them your total sales taxes quarterly from all the
weddings you get? and then just file federal income tax once at the end of the
year? is this another honesty policy, as they can't really determine the number
of jobs you get?
p.s. and i know a lot will say 'get an accountant'. but i'm small enough now
where i want to do this myself and know how it all works.

i like #6. the coffin/mummy wrap shot.

I just ordered a dvd writer from amazon and had a few questions about them.
1. do you copy images to the dvd's the same way you would copy images to
normal cd-r's? if so, when delivered to the client, will those discs read in
their normal cd drives when they want to view the prints?
2. can they view the images off the dvd disc in their dvd player?
3. so the main benefit is that they can store more images? about how many
jpg's will they hold?
thanks y'all.

can anyone tell me for sure if it is 100% legal to conduct business meetings
and collect money in a public restaurant/cafe/coffee shop such as a starbucks
and a borders??? i always assumed it was until questioned by a client and its
got me thinking? anyone know for sure?
also has anyone ever dealt with clients who wanted to pay cash and bypass
paying taxes for their wedding? whats the 'professional way' to handle this
when someone asks? what would you do?

here's to hoping someone is in the mood for a beginner question and that i'm
not interrupting 'american idol'. 1.) i've read previous posts and lessons
from nadine ohara and kari d. and they've mentioned as other people have of
metering off the subject (maybe a person) instead of the background or
metering for the background instead of the foreground. does this imply 'spot
metering' as opposed to 'matrix metering'? my camera is set in matrix and i
wouldn't know how to tell it to meter for this rather than that.
and 2.) i'm assuming that 'metering for the ambient' is simply using manual
metering to gain a correct exposure reading on your meter without taking flash
into account? just a normal manual meter reading??
thanks all.

can anyone out there give me some help on using the sb-800 for manual flash
setting? i've got it strapped to a d80 and was hoping someone could make it a
little easier to explain than the manual. (guide numbers, sensitivity factors,
etc...)
i shoot manual mode on the camera now, but with this new sb-800 how can i
easily set the right amount of flash in M mode? thanks...

anybody ever buy anything off of bwayphoto.com?? their prices seem a little
too good to be true. especially on a new d200 for $1166.00 when a 'refurb' is
$1150.00. why would anyone buy a refurb for $1150.00 when they could have a
new for $16 more? something seems fishy. anybody vouch for 'em????

anybody here have any luck with bridal shows? what are generally the prices
for getting a booth at a bridal show? is this a pricey endeavour or can it
really pay off. what do you bring, set up or do? seems like a good way to get
your name out to a lot of people in one day. thoughts???

just wondering how anyone else here might supplement their income from weddings
in the 'off-season'? do you take on other photography related tasks? what else
is out there in the field that we can generate a little income from? schools?,
sports?
curious as to what others do??
thanks...
