Have the opportunity to pick up one of these lenses for a really good price:
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 APO DG Aspherical Autofocus Lens for
Nikon AF.
I thought it might make a nice addition to the arsenal. You
comments/experience are appreciated.
TIA

Thanks for your responses. I've had ext warranties before that have paid for themselves. I don't buy a car without one. I guess its a personal decision and a gamble that if something does go wrong, it doesn't cost more than one would have spent on the warranty.

Any of the mentioned are reputable. Check out resellerratings.com
I've spent a few grand recently at B&H without a problem.

Nikon offers a two year extended warranty to begin at the end of the 12 months
of the new camera warranty for $170. Is this advisable to purchase? What's the
reliablity of the D200? I welcome your thoughts.
TIA,
Wendy

I hope it doesn't take as long as some of you have indicated but just the fact that it won't cost me makes it good. I bought a couple other lenses to hold me over until I get it. I'll let you know when it do get it back.

I had a little indiscretion last Friday where I hurt my 3 week old 18-200mm
lens. I'm not going to go into details here but suffice to say I was extremely
upset.
I immediately sent it to Nikon expecting the worst...expecting to pay whatever
it cost to get it fixed. I just checked with them since they received it on
Monday and was told that it was accepted for warranty repair AT NO CHARGE.
I am one of the happiest people in the world today. Thank you Nikon!

Thanks Ronald for your input. I can not change where I need to stand for certain situations. Which is why I considered wide angle.
Which of these lenses are considered cheap consumer zooms...the 24-85 or the 18-200...or both? I only want to spend my money on a quality lens that I won't have to replace later...so waiting is always an option.
Be gentle...I am still a novice.

when my question was related to photographing social events....club activities...if this is not a social event, I don't know what is. Just curious.
-
I'm actually thinking of selling the 18-200 and getting that lens. I'm buying the 24-85 because its more affordable for me right now. Is that a mistake? I'll be able to return it then I can wait till I can afford the better one. Plz advise.

some group photos I will be taking in April. While I'm not a wedding
photographer, I do take photos of events for the clubs I am a member of for our
websites. A lot of these photos are of a group performing dances so I think
wide angle is what I need. I've just made the plunge into a DSLR so I am still
very amateur.
My current equipment is a D200, 50mm 1.4, 24-85 2.8-4 (on order..expected
Thursday) and an 18-200mm VR (bought with camera). I'm also contemplating a
12-24mm Tokina if I can make a case to justify it.
Is my current equipment sufficient and which would be the best lens(es) to use.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Patrick, I don't have any help for you but I wanted to make you aware in case you aren't that there will be a lunar eclipse tonight at moon rise. Check out spaceweather.com for details. It will be a perfect opportunity for you to use your equipment...let's hope there are no clouds to obscure our views.
I hope this answer is appropriate for this forum.
Ciao,

Hi,
While I'm not new to digital photography, I am to DSLR. I recently bought the
D200 with the 18-200mm lens. I certainly do love the pictures it takes and
while I am far from a professional, I am considered the "expert" PC, video and
photo person for some of the groups I belong to. I also use both PC and
Mac...whichever serves the appropriate purpose.
My question for the experts here is, should I consider any other lenses? I have
been reading this forum for a couple weeks now and the opinions, of course, are
as varied as the people who frequent here ;-)
I have read a lot about how the 18-200mm lens is a great take along all around
lens but is lacking in certain areas which I probably will not realize until I
have been using it for a long time. I'm interested in taking some close up shots
of animals, insects, flowers; groups of people; and landscapes, as well as ebay
auction photos.
My husband keeps telling me my 18-200mm covers all possibilities but I think I
might be missing out on something with only one lens.
And...has anyone attended the Nikon school? Is it something I should consider?
I don't think I need the basic one but was thinking of the more advanced
session. I certainly know how to using the PC and am a longtime Photoshop user.
Thanks in advance.
