keep working at it... your really showing your depth...

Its my brother in law. Pro Glass would be 17-35 afs 2.8/ 70-200 afs 2.8 and he is doing his own research. Now if you have something constructive to add would love to hear it.
-
At the moment he does not own any glass so the Canon is an option. What appears to be driving this though is the availability of the D1H @ $1200.
As for wht not go with the D70? He likes the big body style of the D1/D2.
Is any of the options worth paying extra for? Or the question may be best asked:
Is spending $1200 on a D1H a wise move? I hesitate to use the word investment....

My brother in law is making the splash into digital SLR's. The
question has come up and I would welcome opinions.
He can get a Nikon USA New D1H from Cameta Camera for $1250 or go up
to the D2H for $2900.
Is the D2H that much better? He is going to shot landscapes, kids
sports etc and will be using pro glass. This is not something that he
can pay off by selling his work.
He asked me my opinion and frankly I don't have one as I shoot Leica
now. But would be interested in educated feedback about the merits of
the D2H over the D1H and if the cost is justifiable...
Thanks..Chris

I will also second Jay's comments regarding Tony Poon and the value of passport on the Bodies. I dont' believe passport is needed of the lenses.

Ten days max....By then it is either sold our so far down stream that no one would know to look anyway.
-
Mark,
I haven't seen it as yet but do you know if it will give you HSS with the "R"?
-
Since the question opened the door to "likes" I would say I most like posts with "B&W" portraits.
Posts which discuss "what lens should I buy" always are more interesting when accompanied by shots from the respective lens.

Good analogy John

Jessie...I like #5

Its in the title

Ray is right. The Leica straps with the plastic shield is IMO the best for protection. The Domke gripper is my favorite otherwise.

Doug, Logic or lack of is directly proportional to the weight of your argument.
If when you approach the pearly gates and have to explain one of your lifes choices to move on, and that question was " how do you justify your decision to spend obscene amounts of time and money on photo equipment? You response could simply be to point at the pictures and remain silent. No logic needed. I on the other hand would be left to talk real fast an pray for an easier question...

Travis, well said though I enjoy the forum but nothing more than awaiting the result of a days shooting.
The best part is that with Wal-mart photo processing I can go check out the latest camera gear in the electronics section and also pick up a few rolls of Max 800 film while I am there.
Seriously I am with Johnson, it is dark out but I am inspired to go shoot something....I knew I would need that Noctilux...Damn.
Good post....

You can rest easy. These cameras are built to handle much more than what you have described here.
This should be a lession to you to never go one week without taking a picture.

Jay...Your make a me laugh...
Years from now there will be lawsuits aimed at compensating all leica owners who suffer from low self esteem due to their equipment lacking "special edition" status. Though at the rate Leica is going that group is shrinking fast. Boy those Germans are crafty almost as good as the tobacco companies at heading off liability suits...Hmmmmm

To all who felt that I was disparaging Nikon or Canon I will quote the great Don King " You have msiconstrued the intent of my meaning".
I continue to shoot a FE2 and still believe that the F5 is the King of SLR's. But at the end of the day I get the most satisfaction from my leica gear. Even if the results suck.
As far a digital? I have owned it, enjoyed it but I personally don't think that taking an image and enhancing it with Photoshop qualifies as Photography. IMO that is photo processing and a discussion already beaten to death.
-
Scott, Seems as if you must have had a busy day at the takeout window. So stressed.
It would seem that you have to measure your choices against "what the Pro's would do" that alone weakens your already weak assessment.
It would seem that you lack not only independent thought but also the good sense not to make all around you aware of this deficit.

After 20+ years of shooting Nikon or Canon equipment I decided to buy
a Leica "M" Body. As other have done before me I tried to rationalize
the decision to pay thousands of dollars for a essentially manual
body and then be faced with the prospect of thousands more for glass.

At the time I read the posts and struggled with why would a group
of seemingly intelligent(?) people would chose to do this. To read
the Nikon or Canon posts one would assume it is all about status or
was related to some type of mid life crisis.
After having owned
and seen the results of this expensive foray this is where I have
arrived. I would like to hear from others your "elevator speech"
about why you shoot Leica. Here is mine:

I took a picture of my daughter which when I developed it caused
me to have to sit down. It captured the soul of an individual in an
ungaurded moment. When the momemt arrived I was glad I had a Leica in
my hands.
I received an unsolicited phone call from Leica to tell
me that my rebate check had been misdirected to a customer in
Colorado and he was going to send it to me directly. Like it or not
that is service. You think Nikon would call you?
I can learn more
about photography in a day at the Leica forum than a year in Nikon
School. Somehow with Leica comes clarity of thought.
I used to
think that a fast lens was 2.8
B&W film is not something they
used in the 50's.
I find myself in the search of the shot as
opposed to pointing and rattling off 8 fps with a zoom lens in the
hopes that the computer caught it.
Digital is bulls**t and Jack
is making a huge mistake.
Marc W gets it.
After 20+ years I
am coming to understand how much I don't know.
-
Please tell me these are going to engraved and not that cheesy (?) screen printed crap they have been tossing out as of late. Not that it will matter because the chances of getting one will be slim at best.

This post made me laugh. My missed shot was not as dramatic as those before me but here is the story none the less. Yesterday we got a fresh coat of snow north of Boston.
So I load my M7 with Porta 400 and my 35 lux to shot a few winter scenes.
I get 50 feet into the woods when I come across a herd of 4 deer led by a 10 point buck. Probably no further than 20 feet from me and staring dead at me. So being the ace photographer I swing my M7 into place checking to make sure that I removed the Lens cover. All the time the buck is staring. I fiddle and fumble to try to focus when I finally get it. Damn is that troup doesn't turn and bolt leaving me a naked scene and grumbling about this god damn rangefinder @#%#%^%$%.
So I immediately went home and started to figure out what R body I should have had to get this shot.....
-
Jay, I normally don't agree with you but your assessment was well written.
One question. When you state that you had better hold on to it for a long time or face losing a ton of money, would you qualify that. Because if you buy a Nikon F5 USA model these days for $1800 they are selling for $12-1300 under warranty. That is hard to understand given Nikon following. So my question to you would be:
Project what type of loss % you expect first year and on for the "R" bodies and lenses.
-
I had a friend expressing interest in the Leica R series. Since I
don't have any "R" hands on experience I was interested in user
feedback on the following two questions.

#1 How much more would you pay for the R9 than an equally new
R8? Figuring the R9 @ 1900 (USA) and an R8 available for $1100
(imported) would anyone with experience with this body recommend
against either the R8 or buying imported?

#2 What would you consider the best two lens profiles for this
series. Shooter is looking for atleast one low light lens.

Thanks in advance

The question really revolves around buying the D1H for $1200.00. It is apparent that the answer to that question is NO.
As for what to buy I am sure he will make that decision based primarily on his financial where with all. If it where me I would go tend towards the Canon D1 Mark II
