You have your "rule of thirds" framing right, but my suggestion is to leave the largest amount of open space infront of your model's face, rather than behind. That way you get the appearance of looking forward. Nice capture though, as a portrait I would see no reason a client wouldn't buy this photo.

Fred, I'm afraid I was fighting the elements with this capture more than I was focusing on the composition. The sun was setting directly off camera, hence the strong backlighting. I had so much light coming directly into my lens it was hard to get enough light on the girl's face. Also, this capture is at 300mm, so a flash was useless. The other element I was fighting was the girl herself! Keeping her in focus (manually, my autofocus wasn't enjoying the light either) while she ran to me became my main objective. I agree that the lighting could have been better, but between battling sunset, sun flares, and a highly animated 2 year old I'm proud of how this one came out. I agree that the story it tells surpasses the technical qualities, which is fine by me.

  1. I struggled with that too; shooting from higher lost the composition I wanted, and propping the albums up made it look too posed and less genuine. I have 10x14" prints coming in on Tuesday, so I'm excited to see if the album titles are more legible at a larger size.

Anytime you're doing "extreme" sports it's best to show where the rider is coming from, and where they are going. A shot like this with little perspective could be an inch off the ground, or 10 feet high; it could be dirt jumping, it could be vert. Just my two cents. Good colors and use of high speed exposure, the action is really frozen!

I like it a lot too. Like you said, it's something some people see everyday walking by, but as an american living in california all my life, it's not something I see ever, which makes it really interesting to me.

did anyone else notice the fly that happened to get into the shot?

between the clouds and their shadows, on the left it looks like an out of focus fly
