  1. Megapixels vs megabites - very different. Check the quality your D200 is on. Raw = largest file, Jpeg fine, on down get smaller. It is not possible to crop to a larger size. Cropping means cutting parts of the image out, it will always be smaller. Interpolation programs that resize images will make them larger.
  2. Your conclusion is fine based on not selling the images or publishing. My conclusion is that the quality is not there, you could not sell them. Taken for a freind or family member but my opinion as far a selling them no way. Nothing against your photography, you got some great compositions, I just don't think even with a 2.8 lens anyone can get good enough quality with any Nikon under a D300. I shot 2000 with my D300 and they are agueably acceptable with lots of post and thankfully images print better than they look on screen.
  3. After post their is not much difference. With what you mentioned above you don't need the d300. The WB is much much better, little better contrast and better exposure and much better AF. The active D lighting and in camer D lighting is great and does what it says. Go to www.Kenrockwell.com some don't like him but he does exhaustive testing on everything and is of value. Some of his opinions are a little on the eybrow raising side but for the most part there is a lot of good information. Also see www.scottkelby.com scroll down for a great and short evaluation of the how the D300 is better than even the D2x
  4. Marc I was checking on d3 avail and was talking to my sales guy (very smart and trusted) he said the new replacement for the 5d was to be announced about Jan 14th (I believe) In all my research I have seen the the 5d is still holding up very very will in regard to image quality against the d3 and d300. Ken Rockwells report and samples of the the d3, d300 and 5d really show the greatness of the 5d. If the new version gives you the second card slot you should be set.
  5. All these posts and no one asks what are you shooting? which is the most important question. If your doing family and landscapes and average shooting the D40 will be a little more updated out of the camera. It is very small and compact also. If you are doing kids sports the D100 has dynamic focus tracking which the D70 and d40 do not have. If you are in more exstreme enviornments the D100 is built stronger. So the D100 is a better tool, the White balance out of the d40 is a little more updated.
  6. Since using Light room and windows vista my prints are the best I have ever seen regarding mathcing my screen. Usually brightness and contrast are the issue not so much the color. Like John mentioned the right color space is the 1st step. I let LR contol the colors and have my epson off for ICM no color controlling at all. Prints are a tiny tiny bit darker mainly due to the brigtness of the monitor but very slight. I have never been more confident or happier with my setup. Epson R2400 and Lightroom. Lab prints always come out great also. I use the cheap Spyder express $60.00 I think.
  7. When her jaw hit the floor the she should go with what makes her happy, I would have said hire the other photographer. I would not want to be second choice or at least not told I was. That was rather insulting I think and your gut is right just stay away. She will have post purchase anxiety even after a deposit. Showing no class or tact means you are in for a world of hassle if you do shoot the wedding.
  8. It may have been a tender moment but the image doesn't really capture that it just looks like a father holding his baby, no eye contact and the faces are not very visable, the image quality is poor. I don't understand all the effort, I would not give this shot to the client and would have tried for a more emotional shot. Not tying to be critical just inform on what I see to better your editing process.
  9. Most of the time with flare your not in the best lighting conditions anyway but yes it will flare. It is a great lens but not as good as a prime in color and contrast. In perfect conditions in great light it performs extremely well. I should have one for sale as soon as I get my D3.
  10. On another forum a guy said Ritz told him a sizeable order was expected on the 19th. In todays day an age with information technology it is amazing that not one person even working for Nikon can find out if a freakin shimpent is getting packed for the US
  11. Similar to what to others said, explain you do a rough edit and delete eye blinks, mistakes like camera shake or the flash did not recycle or funny faces where the B&G did not look their best. Explain you do not give those shots out as they reflect on the quality of your work and every photographer does this as not every shot is perfect. The 6 shots that are missing are not shots you want to have.
  12. It is all how you use it. Th biggest problem is distance and line of site from the transmitter to receiving flash. Usually the slave needs to be on the left so it can receieve. It works great when it works but it is not putting pocket wizards out of business. The distance is the real issue. 40 to 50 feet with a very good line of sight is about it. So close work will be fine. If the batt in the main flash is low that causes problems also.
  13. I curse them every wedding. If you have a 10 plus wedding Party in the church, leaving the church, in the reception that is a ton of time in PS to clone out, forget it. I edit the best ones of the B&G or wait for album selection shots. A B&W conversion helps loose some impact of the sign also. When I can I crop tight and try to cut it out. Other than the down the isle shots with dad all the other "standard" shots are pointless. They are never used. I go right with the Bride and Groom now and don't take everyone comming back up the isles. No one ever wants those shots. Missing those initial moments of the B&G after the ceremony are to big to trade off.
  14. Yeah Charles your missing something, order many 8X10's from your shots??. Good question Dennis, I am waiting for retail society to change the 1930's old school medium format to where 8X12 is the new size. Otherwise when I shoot formals or a formal like shot I leave space for an extra person in the composition and it will make a nice 8X10. The rest of the day I shoot as my viewfinder sees it. With a cheaper 5mp you really need to light it well, with 10mp and up the crop will still look good with nice light. Someday we will walk into stores and 8X12 will be the main frame I hope. Lightroom has a nice cop feature where you can arrange the 8X10 crop over your shot. Most pros I know just sell the 8X12 rather than deal with centering the shot on an 8X10 canvas.
  15. Hey Meg- if your camera checks out a couple things coulbe be the issue. If your down the isle shots or reception entry shots are out of focus check your shutter speed. If your in an auto mode in low light the movement could be the blur. Also if your using center focus lock then recomposing the couple could be out of the depth of field by the time you shoot.
  16. I think I would stay with your 50 for a lot of the night - make things easy - use P mode point the flash straight up bouncing off ceilings and tape a business card on the back of the flash head which will bounce some light into the eyes to avoid raccoon eyes. Get some 12 shot rolls at ritz and practice a lot. If you have the time work on manual mode, use ISO 400 sped film camera on 3.5 shutter at 1/40th and you should be fine all night. If your really close up go down a stop.
  17. The umbrella is out of the side of her head too. Use a shallow depth of field next time and of course keep the major stuff out of their heads. You could duplicate the background layer, try blurring it a little with gaussian then clone/ rubber stamp everything over their heads as you like it. lower the opacity and then erase back the bodies.
  18. Nice work, I think you have a future in photography so don't just buy stuff, invest in nice lenses you will soon get a better body I'm sure. GO to KEH.com they have the best used prices. I would think a 24 would be a nice add but not sure of your budget.
  19. The main purpose of your blog should be to let people know YOU and your personality. Most people post only the latest weddings etc, which is fine but add other stuff so people get to know you, stuff about your life. They can see your work on your site, the blog is to learn about you. If they think they will like you they will meet you and you can close the deal.
