1.
Hey Scott,
Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday but for portraits. When the time comes I am going to talk to beauty salons near me. Look it could give them another source of income.
With you I would look for a stylist on the internet in your area and start calling. Model.....again look for modeling school in your area and see if they have interns you could use. Always negotiate a flat fee.
Cloths......there are plenty of 2nd hand fashion shop around. You could take your stylist and model and buy a couple of outfits. Some shops might rent the clothes to you. I know they do in NYC.
Good Luck!
2.
I received the same email and had no idea how to answer it. I had tried months before to use the contact button and never received an answer and gave up.
After seeing this post I sent Glenn 2 emails with no answer.
I give up!
Great customer service!

  3.
I am living in a 55+ development with many more in the area. I will be retiring early next year and I came up with the idea of opening a little studio in my home for portrait and pet photography. "Really an original idea huh? LOL"
Looking for some reading material on portrait photography.....what is the best book(s) to read????
Ok, now I read a Ken Rockwell review on the Nikon D3200. I don't want to really have a discussion on Ken but he did go on ...on how good the camera was for portraits.? Whats your opinion?
Thank you for your ideas.
4.
I'm thinking about buying a new camera. (Currently have a Nikon D50 and its time to upgrade)

I will be using it for landscape, architecture and family reunions, weddings etc. So I need a generally great camera. So what do I have to take into consideration on my next SLR:

Make

Price ($600- $1500)

Mega pixels

ISO

Lens

Do I have to stay with the big 2 (Nikon or Canon) or should I be looking for another make?

Landscape is my main interest.

What are the main considerations that you have when you buy a camera?

Thanks for your help guys.

  5. You can burn your files to as many different media you want to but if you do not store it somewhere other then your house your pictures are only half safe.

How many memories went floating down the Mississippi, melted to a puddle in the CA fires or ended up who knows where with the tornadoes these past few months.

Using any proprietary software or formats is foolhardy. Stick with the best standard software and formats available at the time. Older versions are more likely to be supported along with the new standards. Or lets say JPG becomes defunct ...at that point entrepenuars would jump in and create a whole new industry to convert the millions to billions of existing files to the "New and Improved" format.

Remarkably, probably the best way to still protect your memories is to print multiple archival copies of your pictures and distribute them amongst your family.

  6. Matt:

If your a Nikon user, look at their Picture Town option. You get 2gig of storage for free and 20gig for $2.99 and there is an option for up to 200gig.

At least with Nikon you know they will not just up and disappear and your pictures with them. Which I believe may have happened with some of the companies in this service sector.

  7. There are Gold CD's and DVD's that are suppose to have a longer life then the normal discs. But something always could go wrong. So you should keep at least 2 copies of your important files.

And if you can, have one set stored off-site some where.....even if its at a family members home. But bank safe deposit box, or on a storage service's server would be better.

  8. Gavin:

After I wrote the above, the thought came to me that the software on your old system was compatible for the CDROM drive installed on that computer. Therefore, when you try to install the software on your current system and it does not find that drive, the install is aborted.

Was the cdrom drive working and do you still have the old system? If so you maybe able to install the drive on the new system and then install the software. I would call your old hardware vendor for guidance.

  9. Gavin:

Since you have the CD with the old software on it, check on the internet to see if they are still in business. If they are you may be able to upgrade to a newer version that will load on your new computer and read the cd's.

If they are not, you may be able to find a competitor's software that will read the disc's.

Also tell us the software vendor and version....other members may know it and give you other paths to try.

    Good luck

If you want pics of the typical NY skyline, (from NJ side) then Liberty State park is your best bet. You can take a NY Water Taxi to it

Or look for a boat in the harbor.

But the main show is in the East river. Probably your best view is from the Brooklyn Promenade or a boat in the East river. You will get the skyline and probably a good view of the harbor.

There are 100's of boats on both sides on the water for the show. They can be pricey but you will have pretty good security and a bathroom.

Roosevelt Island sounds like a good alternative. You can take the tram or subway there, have smaller crowds, a seat and probably security and bathrooms.

The FDR drive will be a madhouse. While the crowds at events like this in NY are pretty friendly....you will probably have people bumping into you at the wrong moment and you will always be worried about damage or theft of your equipment.

  11. Its only going to get worse. An armed forces recruiting station in NYC was bombed yesterday and they think it was related to 4 guys trying to cross the Canadian border 2 of whom where caught and they had pictures of the recruiting station in their possession.

So the heat on photographers in NYC is going to go up, I'm sure.

The fact that a police officer had wrong information is not a crime but it sure is scary. If this happened in March 2002 and not March 2008 ...it would be more excusable. Its 6+ years since 9/11 ....the rules should be well defined and all of law enforcement and the public should have been educated by now.

But the gov't seems to want to keep the public in a dazed and confused state .....I wonder why?

  12. Right now Kodak has two all in one printers with the pigment ink cartridges going for $9.95 for the black and $14.95 for the color. Popular Photography said they are a good buy if you can't afford a pricer Epson, Cannon or HP.

Kodak says is wants to bring the cost of ink down. So it would be very interesting to see what happens if they bring out higher end photo printers.

  13. If you go to www.nikonians.org and do a search on the home page for "N65 user manual" there is a link to Nikon's Singapore site where you can down load a pdf of the manual for a F65 which is identical to the N65.

The link is in the 5th message down. Good luck.
