  1. I've bought approx. 90 items from ebay using paypal with no problems. In fact I have only had 2 problems on ebay period, and paypal helped me to resolve them when I disputed the sales. Both times they also sent me $25 gift coupons, even though the problem was't with them but with the sellers. I have also used paypal with Amazon and a few other sales. So, personally I trust them.
  2. Gabe, if you look at a book of Pulitzer Prize winning photos, you don't see sunrises, seascapes or pictures of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. You see photos of the human condition whether it be war, poverty or suffering or grief. You are too young to remember to remember but there are pictures from 30-40 yrs. ago that stand out to me like yesterday: The intense stare of an Afgani girl on the cover of the National Geographic Mag; The young, naked Vietnamese girl running in terror down the street; The wailing college girl kneeling over the fallen body of a friend at the Kent State Univerity massacre. Many of the older members here will remember these and their impact on people.

You have a unique perspective that you should nurture and it will serve you well as you go on with your work. Good Luck.

  3. Certainly it could be sharper, but not bad at all considering. They are for your personal enjoyment and memories not publishing. I would be thrilled with the results. When you talked about shooting thru binoculars I rolled my eyes, but not bad at all.
  4. You can get an excellent Benro ballhead for approx. $100 on ebay new. I have one and love it. Also bought a Benro carbon fiber tripod for half the price of a gitzo, very nice.
  5. I have one and it is plenty sturdy. The tilt/pan head will hold your camera and lens securely, though personally, I'd get a ballhead. The tripod is everything you can ask for except light. A bit heavy for hiking with.
  6. If, as you say you want to eventually use it on a DSLR, you should take into account the 1.5x bump you will get. So, I would consider something wider than a 24mm or 35mm, maybe a 10-24 sigma or 12-24 Nikon or Tamron with a second mid-range lens. That 35mm is not going to be very wide on a DSLR.
  7. I like your setup and your fonts. I had no problem with the pictures downloading. I might bold the font or make them a little brighter to make them stand out a little, and make them a little larger (the smaller ones at least), but I like the color scheme and the photos are terrific. I wouldn't change much though, except the font for the sign-up info. All in all very nice, congratulations.
  8. From what I understand, they are the same as Benro. I have had a Benro for 6 mos. or so and love it. Sturdy and light. I also, bought a Benro ballhead and have nothing but good things to say about both. They are well built and the ballhead is smooth working and has no problem firmly holding my D80 and 170-500mm Sigma lens. For half the price of the (over-priced) "big three" it is well worth it. I never understood how a tripod with just a few moving parts can cost as much as a camera like the D80 that has precision mechanisms, optics, mirrors and computer chips. They price them like that because people will pay for the name. Hopefully, the heathy competition will bring the prices down a bit.
  9. That is why I said "you decide". I haven't seen a service for 2x your 24c price. Maybe I'll check out that scancafe with a few, but, I'll be honest with you, I have reservations about shipping my one-of-a-kind irreplaceable slides halfway around the world, then having to wait weeks or months for them. I'd be a nervous wreck.
  10. The services that I have seen average $0.75 per slide. If you have several hundred slides... well, you do the math and decide. Personally, for me, it would cost as much to have it done as it would to buy a scanner and do it myself. In the end you have your scans and a scanner to use for other projects whether is is making Christmas cards, calenders or sending emails and faxes.
  11. Just for the record, that Epson V500 will scan 4 slides at at time and comes with Photoshop Elements 4 as well as special software to clean up old photos and slides of scratches, dust etc. I'm looking at it myself because I have several hundred slides from a 2 1/2 month cross country trip I took 30 years ago in a VW Camper. Saw the Grand Canyo, Yosemite, Crater Lake, Mount Rushmore and a ton of other places, Ah, those were the good old days, who would leave their jobs for 3 months now (who could afford the gasoline?)? ;>)
  12. Dedicated slide/film scanners are very expensive. There are a couple of flatbed Epson scanners that are supposed to approach that quality. The new V500 is reasonable, approx. $250, and has had good reviews. The Nikon dedicated scanners are supposed to be the best but are in the $1000+ range. Either way they are take a very long time and are tedious.
  13. Hi Rene`, I'm the guy from the other thread with the same problem. I think the 2 shots are fine they way they are. I like the B+W shots, after all, even in color they are basically B+W anyway and you get a little more detail. Like Peter, I have no problem with the streaking snow flakes. Since this is a sentimental photo, they will help you remember the day you took them better while it was still snowing. Maybe if you were to drop the overexposure down a notch you might get a blacker dog without sacrificing too much detail. It might even bring out the detail in the snow just a touch. I am in the same position as you, my dog Indie (for Independence, born of the 4th of July 2000) is 7 1/2 years old and I want to get a few shot showing her in her prime of vitality and exuberance. Here is a shot of my baby, not so much snow in this, buy I couldn't resist showing her off. ;>)<div>00NqJm-40693584.thumb.jpg.c1aef49f294a8ebf3d85eba265ee66e1.jpg</div>
  14. If you carry a lot of stuff, I like the Lowepro slingshot. It is a shoulder pack that swings around so that you can access your camera in front of you without taking off your pack. If you travel light, I prefer a Lowepro chest harness w/ holster camera case and belt pack w/lens case. This way you have instant access to your camera. The holster camera cases come in many sizes, the one I have can fit my D80 w/300mm zoom lens. Lowepro are excellent quality.
