  1. Ok heres the skinny. I purchased a 70-200 F/4 L lens (non IS) to shoot my sons

golf. I recently posted a question about the 1.4X extender. Im thinking as

opposed to getting the extender, going ahead and purchasing a 300MM f/4 L. Im

    shooting with a rebel XTI.

Im just asking what everyone thinks. Kind of like trading that car you love in

for a new one. The lens has been great and is razor sharp and I thank you all

for helping me decide on it. I am close enough to get the action without a

problem since its amateur golf. However, I was thinking about shooting some

other sports as I have had a few offers to shoot friends children also.

Let me know what you all think. The pros and cons! I figured that with the

lens I have now and the cost of the extender, I could sell my lens and come

out spending just a little bit more on the 300 as if I had purchased the

    extender...not too much though.

Thanks and have a great day.

  2. Im looking to get an extender for my 70-200 F/4L lens. Is there any difference

other than the extra weathering seals? I am going to be just using this is

warm weather shooting my sons golf. I have shot with the lens and it is a gem.

Thanks to all for your help a few months back in helping me pick one. With the

Rebel XTI, 70-200 and a monopod this has produced some awesome images. Just

looking to get a little bit more out of it.

  3. This is from some information on Nikkons rebates

"Why does Nikon use rebates all the time? There seem to be two primary reasons: currency fluctuations and inventory promotion. Because both of these things are always in flux, Nikon's rebates tend to be renewed and tweaked every quarter (and sometimes more often)."

  4. Thanks everyone. I will take into consideration what everyone is saying. I have read on this new camera..and I know that no matter what I read, I will always have missed something.

  5. Hello all. I have a question about knowing what your camera settings should be

set to. As you can see in the picture I have included the image came out very

dark. I did not have time to adjust the settings as I wanted to get the dogs

playing and running around. Trying to pan with Italian greyhounds is work in

itself! I guess what I am getting at is how to know what Aperture, shutter

speeds and ISO speeds need to be. This was taken on a fairly nice day (plenty

of light). This was shot with a 70-200 F/4 L, settings for aperture were 4.0,

shutter speed was 1000 and ISO was 100. I know the ISO needed to be

higher...but how much higher? I did not have time to take sample shots, then

look at the LCD to see how it looked. How do you guys get your lighting down

pat? Is it just practice practice practice? When you dont have time to take a

few sample shots..how do you know what the settings need to be? I hope you

    understand what I am asking.

    thanks

  6. J Rich,

I just received the same camera for Xmas. I asked the question about shooting my son playing golf. I decided on the 70-200 F/4 L lens. Its cheaper and lighter than the 2.8 and I will mostly be shooting outdoors...so the 2.8 is really not needed. I purchased this on Ebay for $450,it was used, but the lens is in like brand new condition. I got this by searching the newly listed lenses. I have tested this and its going to work perfect for what I need it. The pictures are absolutely amazing. I am an intermediate phtographer..and I must say that these pictures are the best I have ever taken. Even if you get any of the lenses above...this hobby WILL last for you. I have been shooting since highschool with crappy lenses and it did not matter to me. I was doing what I enjoyed. My hobby just got better with this lens! I cannot wait to get out every weekend again. One more thing..I also did buy a monopod and a collar for this lens. About another $175 total.

    Hope this helps.

  7. Thanks to all for your insight. I think I am leaning towards the IS f/4 for weight and cost. Since I will be in the daylight I dont think this will be a problem. I think I can achieve the bokeh that I want since there will be no galleries, or many other people in the picture. I am going to take some advice and test out a couple of lenses. Does anyone recommend a good place to rent them? I have seen some places online, but want to go with someone who is trusted. THanks for all your insight...you have now got me scratching my head even more! hahaha.

  8. First off let me say how much I have learned from these forums and its great

to have people like you. I am in a dilema over what lens I need for shooting

golf matches. This will be of my child and I can get relatively close to the

action (close enough so the shutter does not bother them). FOr what I have

used so far is just a 70-300MM cheap canon lens. The pictures are fine..but I

want professional looking shots. Ill be shooting for about the next 6 years

    with him.

My options of getting a lens are narrowed down to this.

    1. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L

    2. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L

Obviously I will be shooting with much light. I know with the 2.8 I can focus

more on the subject with the blurry background. I will probably be using a

monopod either way. Is the IS version worth getting for what I am using it

for? I could spend the money, but want opinions from you all. I also might be

using a 1.4 convertor. Will I lose alot of aperture if I got the f/4 version?

I would just like recommendations from you guys in hopes I can find a lens

that I need for the right price.

    thanks so much in advance

    Barry
